Notizen: Abstract— The interaction between fatigue damage (i.e., fatigue crack propagation) and internal grain boundary damage (i.e., cavity formation at grain boundaries) has been studied for the Alloy 800H at 750°C for constant plastic strain ranges but different experimental conditions. Most experiments were performed at constant ranges of alternating tensile/compression stresses. Symmetrical as well as asymmetrical tests (with larger compression stresses) were performed. In comparison to the former tests, asymmetrical tests led to shorter cyclic lifetimes mainly due to cavity formation which was not observed for symmetrical tests. It could be shown that a fast compressive and a slow tensile half cycle (at large compressive and low tensile stresses) are ideal conditions for the nucleation and growth of cavities. Based on quantitative measurements of the cavity density from interrupted fatigue tests, a physical model is presented which can predict the number of cycles to failure. This cycle number is determined only by fatigue crack growth which is controlled by (a) athermal plastic deformation, (b) creep deformation and (c) rate enhancement by cavitation.

Notizen: Three primary investigation techniques are useful for studying clusters or small particles in solid solution: X-ray small-angle scattering, neutron small-angle scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. Advantages and disadvantages of these methods will be discussed.

Notizen: Diffuse X-ray diffraction from Co-Ga single crystals containing 48 to 56 at.% Co gives evidence for strong distortion fields around vacant sites in the Co sublattice and less strong fields around Co atoms on the Ga sublattice. The distortion is comparable to that occurring in Zr-20 wt.% Nb alloys and is characterized by shifts of atoms parallel to (111). The distortion has some similarity to the atomic structure of the ω phase found in Zr-10 wt % Nb.

Notizen: The normalized integrated small-angle scattered intensity for Al-Zn alloys should be independent of whether the measurements are made with X-rays or neutrons. In order to check this, and thus the correction and standardization processes, the small-angle scattering from an Al-5.05 at.% Zn alloy containing GP zones was measured with these two types of radiation. The data were corrected and converted to absolute units with reference to the commonly accepted secondary standards: vanadium for the neutron data and polyethylene (Lupolen) for the X-ray data. The results are shown to differ by, at best, 6% if reasonable values for the change in atomic volume with alloy composition are taken into account. These findings are compared with those available from the literature, and the consistency is found to be somewhat lacking. Additional careful work is clearly needed to determine if the difficulty is traceable to the data correction or to the conversion to absolute units.

Notizen: The review describes results of the last three or four years from the application of both X-ray and neutron small-angle scattering (SAS) to problems in the general field of materials science. A wide range of topics has been covered including phase separation in binary and ternary systems (early stages as well as the determination of the metastable miscibility gap), density and concentration fluctuations in single-phase systems, and studies of various structural defects such as voids, radiation damage, dislocations, and surfaces and interfaces. The interaction between magnetic moments and neutrons has made possible SAS research on the long-range interaction of spins in complicated magnetic systems and flux-line studies in type-II superconductors, and this work is also reviewed.

Notizen: Metastable precipitation as the formation of GP zones is governed by a metastable miscibility gap. It is shown that the limits of this gap in a ternary system can be determined from combined analysis of the small-angle scattering (SAS) of X-rays and of neutrons. The necessary condition is a significantly different ratio β = (bC−bA)/(bB−bA) of the atomic scattering amplitudes b of the components A, B and C for both the X-rays and the neutrons. This difference enables one to determine the slope of the tie-line passing through an individual alloy by comparing the integrated SAS intensities of the two types of radiation. Thereafter, the determination of the gap limits follows the same procedure as already known for binary alloys. The change of the mean atomic volume with composition influences the result, but this can be taken into account provided the same Vegard's law is valid for both the depleted matrix and the precipitate.

Notizen: The method described in the preceding paper [Gerold (1977), J. Appl. Cryst. 10, 25–27] has been applied to the system Al–Zn–Mg where the small-angle scattering has been measured from nine alloys having zinc and magnesium contents up to 5.4 and 2.5 at. %, respectively. The alloys were annealed at room temperature where the metastable equilibrium of GP zone formation is reached after about one month. From combined analysis of the X-ray and neutron results the slopes of the tie-lines have been evaluated in this region of the phase diagram. The further analysis leads to the approximate determination of the miscibility gap limits. The confidence limits of the determination were restricted by it not being possible to make measurements far enough out in the tail of the neutron scattering profile from the small GP zones (diameter less than 30 Å) to allow the background intensity to be separated completely satisfactorily. The ultimate limiting factor for this type of analysis may be the accuracy to which the mean atomic volumes are known.
