Beschreibung: Although Pliocene temperature and pCO2 are similar to those predicted in the IPPC RCP4.5 scenario, the distribution of coral reefs in the center of maximum coral diversity, the Coral Triangle, during this period has not been explored. We discovered a significantly lower occurrence of reefs during the Pliocene, which we refer to as the Pliocene Reef Gap, but this decrease was not associated with a drop in coral genus richness. While some of the multiple local causes that drove this decline, such as sea level rise, are analogs to drivers of Anthropocene reef decline, neither warming nor increasing pCO2 are among them.

Notizen: A proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) study of the axisymmetric turbulent wake behind a disk has been performed using multipoint hot-wire data. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and disk diameter was kept constant at 28 000. The investigated region spanned from 10 to 50 disk diameters downstream. The hot-wire data were obtained using two rakes: a seven wire fixed array and a six wire array azimuthally traversable to span the cross section of the flow in increments of 15°. The instantaneous streamwise velocity component data were Fourier transformed in time and decomposed in Fourier series in the azimuthal direction to form the kernel for the POD. For all downstream positions, two distinct peaks were found in the first eigenspectrum: one at azimuthal mode 2 at near zero frequency, and another at azimuthal mode 1 at a fixed Strouhal number (fd/U∞) of 0.126. Both peaks decrease in magnitude as the flow evolves downstream, but the peak at the Strouhal number 0.126 decreases more rapidly than the one at near-zero frequency, leaving the latter to eventually dominate. Because of this evolution, the eigenvalues integrated over frequency show an azimuthal mode-1 dominance at x/D=10 and a mode-2 dominance by x/D=50. The results are compared to those recently obtained in the axisymmetric far jet, and the results of previous wake investigations. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Instantaneous measurements of the streamwise velocity component were obtained in the far field region of an axisymmetric turbulent jet at exit Reynolds numbers ranging from 40 000 to 84 700. The data were taken from 20 to 69 diameters downstream of the jet exit using 138 hot-wires. The proper orthogonal decomposition was applied to a double Fourier transform in time and azimuthal direction of the two-point velocity correlation tensor. The first eigenspectrum, which contains more than 60% of the kinetic energy, has two peaks: A dominant peak at azimuthal mode-2 at near zero frequency, and a secondary peak at mode-1 at a local Strouhal number (fx/Uc) of approximately 1. The most striking feature was the general behavior of the eigenspectra: when normalized to reflect the energy repartition per mode number only, they peaked at mode-2, and were independent of downstream position in the experiment considered. They were also similar in nature to those obtained in earlier experiments at x/D=6, just past the end of the potential core, but distinctly different from those closer to the jet exit where mode-0 and higher modes dominated. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A new theory for the decay of homogeneous, isotropic turbulence is proposed in which truly self-preserving solutions to the spectral energy equation are found that are valid at all scales of motion. The approach differs from the classical approach in that the spectrum and the nonlinear spectral transfer terms are not assumed a priori to scale with a single length and velocity scale. Like the earlier efforts, the characteristic velocity scale is defined from the turbulence kinetic energy and the characteristic length scale is shown to be the Taylor microscale, which grows as the square root of time (or distance). Unlike the earlier efforts, however, the decay rate is shown to be of power-law form, and to depend on the initial conditions so that the decay rate constants cannot be universal except possibly in the limit of infinite Reynolds number. Another consequence of the theory is that the velocity derivative skewness increases during decay, at least until a limiting value is reached. An extensive review of the experimental evidence is presented and used to evaluate the relative merits of the new theory and the more traditional views.
