    Notes: Theory and experimental measurements are compared with a novel three-wire thermocouple. Signals from three wires of unequal diameters are recorded from the thermocouple suspended in constant flow with a periodic temperature fluctuation. It is demonstrated that the reconstructed signal from the three-wire thermocouple requires no compensation for ω≤5ω1, where ω1 is the natural frequency of the smaller wire. The latter result represents a significant improvement compared to previous work with two-wire thermocouples. A correction factor has also been derived to account for wires of arbitrary diameter. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Measurements are recorded for multiwire thermocouples consisting of either two or three wires of unequal diameters. Signals from the multiwire probe are recorded for a reversing gas flow with both a periodic temperature and time constant fluctuation. It is demonstrated that the reconstructed signal from the multiwire thermocouple requires no compensation provided ω/ω1〈2.3 for two wires or ω/ω1〈3.6 for three wires where ω1 (=2πf) is the natural frequency of the smaller wire based on the maximum gas velocity. The latter results were possible provided Fourier transformed data from the wires were used and knowledge of the gas velocity phase angle was available. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Theoretical expressions are derived for the steady-state frequency response of a supported thermocouple wire. In particular, the effects of axial heat conduction are demonstrated for both a supported one material wire and a two material wire with unequal material properties across the junction. For the case of a one material supported wire, an exact solution is derived which compares favorably with an approximate expression that only matches temperatures at the support junction. Moreover, for the case of a two material supported wire, an analytical expression is derived that closely correlates numerical results.

    Notes: Experimental measurements are made for the steady-state frequency response of a supported thermocouple wire. In particular, the effects of axial heat conduction are demonstrated for both a supported one material wire (type K) and a two material wire (type T) with unequal material properties across the junction. The data for the amplitude ratio and phase angle are correlated to within 10% with the theoretical predictions of Fralick and Forney (1992) for a laser-heated junction with no bead. This is accomplished by choosing a natural frequency ωn for the wire data to correlate the first-order response at large gas temperature frequencies. Moreover, it is found that a large bead size (roughly twice the wire diameter) will increase the amplitude ratio at low frequencies and distort the phase angle. In the latter case, it is necessary to increase the thermocouple wire length by 20% in the theory to correlate the data when the junctions have beads (silver soldered).

    Notes: Abstract The physics of a gas diffusion electrode–membrane cell is discussed and comparisons are made with experimental data. In particular, a second order expansion has been used to correlate the maximum current density data, valid for both small to large overpotentials and electrode specific surface areas. It is also demonstrated that the limiting or maximum current density for the diffusion limit can be predicted by assuming simple molecular diffusion across the membrane and the ion reference (open circuit) concentration in the cathode. An expression is also developed to account for differences in reactant gas concentrations and flowrates between reference and normal operating conditions. Comparisons are made between the theory and maximum current data for the absorption of H2S, CO2 and SO2. These comparisons suggest that the current density limitations of the cell are affected by electrochemical reaction rates on the cathode surface. Other possible limitations for electrochemical cell performance are discussed.

    Notes: The pipeline mixing of two fluid streams by turbulent jet injection normal to the pipeline has been studied theoretically and experimentally. A simple scaling law for the second moment of the tracer concentration within the pipeline is proposed for the first fifteen pipe diameters down-stream from the injection point. The similarity solution is derived by assuming that the tracer diffuses in a weak compound jet moving parallel to the pipeline axis. The theoretical results are correlated with all of the available experimental measurements. The results indicate that the second moment of the tracer concentration decreases with increasing jet momentum and distance from the injection point such that M = 0.25. (lm/D)-2 (x/D)-4/3.

    Notes: A numerical model has been developed to predict the formation of carbon black particles by benzene pyrolysis. The approach, patterned after the work of Jensen, assumes that particle formation is controlled by four steps: gas phase reactions producing radical species, nucleation, growth and coagulation, and oxidation. In the present model, 15 reactions based on the work of Fujii and Asaba are used to describe the gas phase kinetics in which the phenyl radical is treated as the important intermediate in the formation of carbon black. A discrete distribution of 10 particle radii is also used to approximate the simultaneous growth and coagulation of spherical carbon particles. The results of the model show that a self-preserving log normal distribution of carbon particles develops after an initial nucleation and growth period. The model results also compare favorably with reactor data. In particular, the numerical model predicts a mass median carbon particle diameter to within 10% of measured values.
