Description: What did the future hold for Rhodesia's white population at the end of a bloody armed conflict fought against settler colonialism? Would there be a place for them in newly independent Zimbabwe? Pioneers, Settlers, Aliens, Exiles sets out the terms offered by Robert Mugabe in 1980 to whites who opted to stay in the country they thought of as their home. The book traces over the next two decades their changing relationship with the country when the post-colonial government revised its symbolic and geographical landscape and reworked codes of membership. Particular attention is paid to colonial memories and white interpellation in the official account of the nation's rebirth and indigene discourses, in view of which their attachment to the place shifted and weakened. As the book describes the whites' trajectory from privileged citizens to persons of disputed membership and contested belonging, it provides valuable background information with regard to the land and governance crises that engulfed Zimbabwe at the start of the twenty-first century.

Description: Ascension Island is a remote South Atlantic equatorial site, ideal for monitoring tropical background CH 4 . In September 2014 and July 2015, octocopters were used to collect air samples in Tedlar bags from different heights above and below the well-defined Trade Wind Inversion (TWI), sampling a maximum altitude of 2700 meters above mean sea-level. Sampling captured both remote air in the marine boundary layer below the TWI, and also air masses above the TWI that had been lofted by convective systems in the African tropics. Air above the TWI was characterized by higher CH 4 but no distinct shift in δ 13 C was observed compared to the air below. Back-trajectories indicate that lofted CH 4 emissions from southern hemisphere Africa have bulk δ 13 C CH4 signatures similar to background, suggesting mixed emissions from wetlands, agriculture and biomass burning. The campaigns illustrate the usefulness of UAS sampling, and Ascension's value for atmospheric measurement in an understudied region.

Description: From 2007 to 2013, the globally-averaged mole fraction of methane in the atmosphere increased by 5.7 ± 1.2 ppb yr -1 . Simultaneously, δ 13 C CH4 (a measure of the 13 C/ 12 C isotope ratio in methane) has shifted to significantly more negative values since 2007. Growth was extreme in 2014, at 12.5 ± 0.4 ppb, with a further shift to more negative values being observed at most latitudes. The isotopic evidence presented here suggests the methane rise was dominated by significant increases in biogenic methane emissions, particularly in the tropics: for example, from expansion of tropical wetlands in years with strongly positive rainfall anomalies, or emissions from increased agricultural sources such as ruminants and rice paddies. Changes in the removal rate of methane by the OH radical have not been seen in other tracers of atmospheric chemistry and do not appear to explain short term variations in methane. Fossil fuel emissions may also have grown, but the sustained shift to more 13 C-depleted values together with its significant interannual variability, and the tropical and Southern Hemisphere loci of post-2007 growth, both indicate fossil fuel emissions have not been the dominant factor driving the increase. A major cause of increased tropical wetland and tropical agricultural methane emissions, the likely major contributors to growth, may be their responses to meteorological change.

Description: Plasma-gas interaction was investigated and the basic mechanisms for energy and particle transport. The solution approach assumes cylindrical geometry and includes a multiplicity of atomic reactions, and the presence of a strong magnetic field is described. The principal reactions are electron and ion impact ionization, and charge exchange between hot ions and cold neutrals. Radial particle and energy transport is mainly by diffusion. A modified Bohm diffusion model for plasma in the core of the plume, and classical neutral particle diffusion in the cooler regions of the flow are presented. Neutrals are allowed to free stream in the low density regions, where the collision mean-free-path becomes comparable, or even larger than the characteristic dimensions of the system.
