    Description: This program was developed as an aid in the design and analysis of subsonic wind tunnels. It brings together and refines previously scattered and over-simplified techniques used for the design and loss prediction of the components of subsonic wind tunnels. It implements a system of equations for determining the total pressure losses and provides general guidelines for the design of diffusers, contractions, corners and the inlets and exits of non-return tunnels. The algorithms used in the program are applicable to compressible flow through most closed- or open-throated, single-, double- or non-return wind tunnels or ducts. A comparison between calculated performance and that actually achieved by several existing facilities produced generally good agreement. Any system through which air is flowing which involves turns, fans, contractions etc. (e.g., an HVAC system) may benefit from analysis using this software. This program is an update of ARC-11138 which includes PC compatibility and an improved user interface. The method of loss analysis used by the program is a synthesis of theoretical and empirical techniques. Generally, the algorithms used are those which have been substantiated by experimental test. The basic flow-state parameters used by the program are determined from input information about the reference control section and the test section. These parameters were derived from standard relationships for compressible flow. The local flow conditions, including Mach number, Reynolds number and friction coefficient are determined for each end of each component or section. The loss in total pressure caused by each section is calculated in a form non-dimensionalized by local dynamic pressure. The individual losses are based on the nature of the section, local flow conditions and input geometry and parameter information. The loss forms for typical wind tunnel sections considered by the program include: constant area ducts, open throat ducts, contractions, constant area corners, diffusing corners, diffusers, exits, flow straighteners, fans, and fixed, known losses. Input to this program consists of data describing each section; the section type, the section end shapes, the section diameters, and parameters which vary from section to section. Output from the program consists of a tabulation of the performance-related parameters for each section of the wind tunnel circuit and the overall performance values that include the total circuit length, the total pressure losses and energy ratios for the circuit, and the total operating power required. If requested, the output also includes an echo of the input data, a summary of the circuit characteristics and plotted results on the cumulative pressure losses and the wall pressure differentials. The Subsonic Wind Tunnel Performance Analysis Software is written in FORTRAN 77 (71%) and BASIC (29%) for IBM PC series computers and compatibles running MS-DOS 2.1 or higher. The machine requirements include either an 80286 or 80386 processor, a math co-processor and 640K of main memory. The PERFORM analysis software is written for the RM/FORTRAN v2.4 compiler. This portion of the code is portable to other platforms which support a standard FORTRAN 77 compiler. Source code and executables for the PC are included with the distribution. They are compressed using the PKWARE archiving tool; the utility to unarchive the files, PKUNZIP.EXE, is included. With the PERFINTER program interface the user is allowed to enter the wind tunnel characteristics via the menu driven program, but this is only available for the PC. The standard distribution medium for this package is a 5.25 inch 360K MS-DOS format diskette. This software package was developed in 1990.     Description: The structural cost of open return wind tunnels is significantly less than that of the more conventional closed return wind tunnels. However, because of the effects of external winds, the flow quality of open return wind tunnels is an area of concern at the low speeds required for V/STOL testing. The development of a configuration which has good flow quality at low as well as at high test speeds is described. The flow quality required at the low test speeds of interest for V/STOL aircraft is discussed and alternatives to the traditional manner of specifying the flow quality requirements in terms of dynamic pressure and angle of attack are suggested.

    Description: Two annular diffusers downstream of a nacelle-mounted fan were tested for aerodynamic performance, measured in terms of two static pressure recovery parameters (one near the diffuser exit plane and one about three diameters downstream in the settling duct) in the presence of several inflow conditions. The two diffusers each had an inlet diameter of 1.84 m, an area ratio of 2.3, and an equivalent cone angle of 11.5, but were distinguished by centerbodies of different lengths. The dependence of diffuser performance on various combinations of swirling, radially distorted, and/or azimuthally distorted inflow was examined. Swirling flow and distortions in the axial velocity profile in the annulus upstream of the diffuser inlet were caused by the intrinsic flow patterns downstream of a fan in a duct and by artificial intensification of the distortions. Azimuthal distortions or defects were generated by the addition of four artificial devices (screens and fences). Pressure recovery data indicated beneficial effects of both radial distortion (for a limited range of distortion levels) and inflow swirl. Small amounts of azimuthal distortion created by the artificial devices produced only small effects on diffuser performance. A large artificial distortion device was required to produce enough azimuthal flow distortion to significantly degrade the diffuser static pressure recovery.

    Description: An experimental reseach and development program was undertaken to develop and document new flow-control devices for use in the major modifications to the 40 by 80 Foot wind tunnel at Ames Research Center. These devices, which are applicable to other facilities as well, included grid-type and quasi-two-dimensional flow straighteners, louver panels for valving, and turning-vane cascades with net turning angles from 0 deg to 90 deg. The tests were conducted at model scale over a Reynolds number range from 2 x 100,000 to 17 x 100,000, based on chord. The results showed quantitatively the performance benefits of faired, low-blockage, smooth-surface straightener systems, and the advantages of curved turning-vanes with hinge-line gaps sealed and a preferred chord-to-gap ratio between 2.5 and 3.0 for 45 deg or 90 deg turns.

    Description: Two sting-mounted, 50.8 cm (20 in.) span, knee-blown, jet-flap models were tested in a large (2.1- by 2.5-m (7- by 10-ft) subsonic wind tunnel. A straight- and swept-wing model were tested with fixed flap deflection with various combinations of full-span leading-edge slats. The swept-wing model was also tested with wing tip extensions. Data were taken at angles-of-attack between 0 deg and 40 deg, at dynamic pressures between 143.6 N/sq m (3 lb/sq ft) and 239.4 N/sq m (5 lb/sq ft), and at Reynolds numbers (based on wing chord) ranging from 100,000 to 132,000. Jet flap momentum blowing coefficients up to 10 were used. Lift, drag, and pitching-moment coefficients, and exit flow profiles for the flap blowing are presented in graphical form without analysis.

The investigation was conducted in the Ames Research Center 40- by 80-foot Wind Tunnel which served as the wind source. Several inlets and two exits were tested at wind directions ranging from 0 to 180 degrees and at wind-to-test-section velocity ratios from zero to somewhat greater than one. For the best inlet configuration the flow quality was good, with a velocity deviation in each of the three component directions generally less. The loss in total pressure due to the inlet treatment was low: about 0.035 of the test-section dynamic pressure for the no-wind case.

    Description: The low-speed characteristics of a large-scale model of the F-14A aircraft were studied in tests conducted in the Ames Research Center 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel. The primary purpose of the present tests was the determination of lateral-directional stability levels and control effectiveness of the aircraft in its high-lift configuration. Tests were conducted at wing angles of attack between minus 2 deg and 30 deg and with sideslip angles between minus 12 deg and 12 deg. Data were taken at a Reynolds number of 8.0 million based on a wing mean aerodynamic chord of 2.24 m (7.36 ft). The model configuration was changed as required to show the effects of direct lift control (spoilers) at yaw, yaw angle with speed brake deflected, and various amounts and combinations of roll control.
