    Notes: : The importance of evaporation in hydrologic modeling has been investigated by analysis of water budget at various scales and application of a water management model at plot scale. The data at all scales indicate that evaporation constitutes a major hydrological output. Accurate determination of watershed evapotranspiration depends upon appropriate accounting for the various components of evapotranspiration and their areal and temporal variability. An application of a water management model has revealed that the ranking of the sensitivity of input parameters depends upon the method of determination of evapotranspiration.

    Notes: : The watershed model GAMES is used for the evaluation of a targeting approach to control fluvial sedimentation arising from soil erosion in agricultural areas. The data considered for the analysis consists of output from the application of the model to existing and hypothetical soil and crop management systems in two small watersheds of southern Ontario, one in the rolling uplands and the other in a very flat lowland area. The model output includes estimates of spring sediment yield from field-size cells to the stream outlet for existing agricultural management conditions, and estimates of sediment yield resulting from the successive implementation of two levels of soil erosion controls under four remedial measures strategies. The results reveal that, for the rolling upland watershed exhibiting a wide range of soil erosion and sediment yield rates, targeted control programs can be expected to provide an extremely effective approach to sediment control. For flat lowland watersheds, exhibiting relatively uniform soil erosion and sediment yield rates, the strategy of targeting controls may be somewhat more effective than a random approach to control, but not as efficient as in the case of watersheds in more rolling terrain. It is evident from the study that a screening model such as GAMES provides a very useful tool for the planning and evaluation of erosion and sediment control programs.

    Notes: A multi-tier approach for agricultural watershed management has been proposed. The approach involves identification of a watershed management issue/problem, selection or development of simple conceptual model suitable for the exploration of the issue/problem identified and appropriate to the database available, and application of the model the address the identified issue/problem. The procedure is repeated by increasing the complexity in the conceptual model until the identified issue/problem has been addressed satisfactorily. An application of the procedure to an example watershed in southern Ontario conditions is shown. The application example has revealed that for identification of temporal pattern of runoff and sediment loads a simple conceptual model is adequate. For identification of spatial location of the sediment source areas and for the development of a monitoring program for the evaluation of remedial strategies a more complex distributed agricultural watershed model is necessary.

    Notes: : Field studies were conducted to investigate the effects of tillage practices on the saturated hydraulic conductivity, and quantity and quality of surface runoff water resulting from the application of the liquid swine manure as a fertilizer. As part of the study, infiltration experiments were conducted on silt-loam soil with no-tillage (NT) and disk tillage (DT) practices. Liquid swine manure was applied on test plots, and the rainfall was applied by the portable rainfall simulator. The infiltration data was analyzed for the saturated hydraulic conductivity (K8) and runoff volume determinations. The surface runoff water was analyzed for total N, total P, ammonia, and nitrate concentration determinations. The study indicated that the tillage had significant effects on Ks, and quantity and quality of runoff water. The Ks values of the NT plots were found to vary from 0.693 to 1.734 mm/min, with a mean of 1.494 mm/min, while they varied from 1.056 to 2.543 mm/min, with a mean of 2231 mm/mm in the DT plots. The total N, total P, ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen concentrations were lower in runoff generated from DT plots, compared to that from the NT plots. The chemical concentration levels were significantly different in runoff waters collected one-day after manure application than in those collected 40-days after the manure application. Study suggested that the DT practice must be preferred over the NT practice if liquid swine manure is used as the fertilizer. The study is further continued to assess the long-term impacts of swine manure application and tillage on the quantity and quality of surface runoff water.

    Description: Soil-erodibility indices were investigated in two regions of Ontario to evaluate their seasonal variation and differences between soil types. Shear strength and water-stable aggregates 〉0.5 mm were strongly negatively correlated with gravimetric soil water content for a Guelph sandy loam soil in southwestern Ontario. Similar variation of shear strength was estimated in three other southwestern Ontario surface soils as a result of seasonal changes in moisture content. Shear strength and aggregate stability increased as four eastern Ontario soils, ranging in texture from loamy sand to clay, dried and warmed following spring thaw. Laboratory incubation at constant temperature and water content showed that shear strength increased in two fine-textured soils with increasing degree days but changed very little in two coarse-textured soils. At the point-of-thaw in the field, all of the eastern Ontario soils exhibited very high values of the indices 1/shear strength and 1/aggregate stability, averaging approximately 15 times those of early July. During spring fallow and seed-bed to 10% canopy periods, the mean values of these indices were 3.7 and 1.4 times, respectively, those in early July. For winter-thaw conditions in the three southwestern Ontario soils, the index 1/shear strength averaged 17 times greater than in the summer. Spring values of this index averaged approximately twice those of summer. Results suggest that Ontario soils are much more susceptible to erosion under thaw and spring conditions than later during the growing season. Soil water content and soil warming may affect the re-establishment of resistance to erosion in soils rendered erodible by freezing, thawing, and saturation.     Description: The use of the universal soil loss equation in Canada to estimate soil loss potential for soil and water conservation planning purposes has been limited by the lack of published rainfall erosion indices and by the arduous procedure generally accepted for determination of these indices. This study was conducted to develop and test relatively simple methods to develop annual rainfall erosion indices and associated seasonal distribution patterns. An approach to the determination of a rainfall-runoff factor to accommodate the effect of winter conditions has also been included. The relatively simple techniques for estimating average annual rainfall erosion indices and seasonal distribution patterns of rainfall erosion have been found to yield comparable values to those determined by more tedious methods. These erosion indices and associated distribution patterns have proven useful for the development of a first approximation of rainfall erosion maps for Canadian locations east of the Rocky Mountains.     Description: A study was conducted to evaluate the potential seasonal variation in soil erodibility (K) for selected soils of southwestern Ontario. Field-plot data, laboratory flume/rainfall-simulator studies, and a K-factor prediction equation were used to assess the potential magnitude of the seasonal variation of soil erodibility. Field-plot studies for a Guelph loam soil revealed that values were highest in the winter-spring thaw period (March) with a ratio of K seasonal to K annual (Kc) of 10. Laboratory flume and rainfall simulations with Fox sand, Haldimand silty clay, and Colwood silt loam soils were conducted with soil moisture and internal drainage varied to simulate seasonal conditions.     Description: Potential sheet erosion losses from 13 agricultural watersheds were investigated to assess the effects of agricultural land use on soil erosion levels. The agricultural watersheds, ranging in size from 19 to 54 km2, were representative of the predominant livestock and cropping management systems in the major physiographic and climatic regions of Southern Ontario. Average annual sheet erosion losses were estimated on a field basis using the universal soil loss equation. Rainfall intensity and soil and topographic variability were considered in deriving mean annual soil losses for a range of field crops. Crops yielding the highest annual sheet erosion loss estimates were row crops, such as horticultural cash crops (9.1 ton/ha/yr), beans (7.6 ton/ha/yr), and continuous corn (6.7 ton/ha/yr). Erosion losses from crops in rotations with grasses or legumes (corn, small grains, meadow) and from tobacco were determined to be approximately one half of values obtained for continuous row cropping systems.
