    Description: Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is a drought-tolerant fast growing tree, which could be an alternative to the more common tree species used in short-rotation coppice on marginal land. The plasticity of black locust in the form of ecophysiological and morphological adaptations to drought is an important precondition for its successful growth in such areas. However, adaptation to drought stress is detrimental to primary production. Furthermore, the soil water availability condition of the initial stage of development may have an impact on the tree resilience. We aimed to investigate the effect of drought stress applied during the resprouting on the drought tolerance of the plant, by examining the black locust growth patterns. We exposed young trees in lysimeters to different cycles of drought. The drought memory affected the plant growth performance and its drought tolerance: the plants resprouting under drought conditions were more drought tolerant than the well-watered ones. Black locust tolerates drastic soil water availability variations without altering its water use efficiency (2.57 g L−1), evaluated under drought stress. Due to its constant water use efficiency and the high phenotypic plasticity, black locust could become an important species to be cultivated on marginal land.

    Description: A partire dalla metà del Trecento, una gran parte dei temi narrativi della grande letteratura europea, ma anche molti materiali folclorici, storici e religiosi, furono tradotti in versi nelle ottave canterine. Tra i cantari antichi, databili cioè entro il XIV secolo, la Guerra di Troia è un esempio del tutto singolare, per le sue ampie dimensioni e per la sua dipendenza da fonti scritte. Quasi un poema, pur nelle vesti di un cantare, essa è prova del grande impatto che ebbero, non solo presso il pubblico dei mercanti, ma anche presso uditorî piú vasti, materie fortunatissime come quella troiana, che a partire dal Roman de Troie di Benoît de Sainte-Maure (XII secolo) si sono spinte dal centro alla periferia della letteratura romanza medievale.

    Description: Le droit est le produit d’une société en même temps qu’il aspire à lui donner des règles qui résistent au temps ; il est à la fois dans l’histoire et en dehors d’elle. Cela vaut particulièrement pour Rome, où le droit a évolué, en grande partie, sous la forme d’un dialogue rationnel et argumenté, établi par les juristes dans un présent dilaté créé par l’écriture. Historiciser le droit signifie alors assumer le point de vue des Anciens eux-mêmes et relier les écrits des juristes aux champs discursifs proches dont ils nourrissaient leur pensée – rhétorique, philosophie, histoire, poésie. Cette leçon inaugurale nous convie ainsi à découvrir la pensée juridique romaine au fil des textes antiques et modernes, du Digeste de Justinien au Songe du Vergier en passant par les Métamorphoses d’Ovide, pour mieux saisir la beauté sévère de ce droit devenu ensuite commun à une grande partie de l’Europe.

    Description: Grâce au Digeste de Justinien, les œuvres des juristes romains ont constitué le droit en vigueur dans de nombreux pays d’Europe, du xie au xixe siècle. Mais ces écrits ont suscité plus d’intérêt pour leur contenu juridique que pour leurs qualités littéraires. D’où cette question initiale : Les juristes romains étaient-ils des écrivains ? Leurs œuvres constituent-elles une littérature ? S’appuyant sur une documentation riche et variée, l’auteur propose, dans une approche au croisement du droit, de la philologie et de l’histoire, de redonner une place à cette « littérature invisible ». Soumettre les écrits des juristes aux méthodes et questions habituellement réservées aux œuvres littéraires permet d’identifier les nombreux liens que la pensée juridique a établis avec les autres domaines de la culture antique afin de parvenir à une résolution équitable des conflits grâce à l’argumentation. Partant du point de vue des lecteurs antiques, l’ouvrage présente trois attitudes que le juriste pouvait adopter dans sa pratique : celle du philosophe, de l’historien ou de l’enseignant. Cet ouvrage est issu d’un cycle de conférences dispensées au Collège de France.

    Description: Soil water availability, nutrient supply and climatic conditions are key factors for plant production. For a sustainable integration of bioenergy plants into agricultural systems, detailed studies on their water uses and growth performances are needed. The new bioenergy plant Igniscum Candy is a cultivar of the Sakhalin Knotweed (Fallopia sachalinensis), which is characterized by a high annual biomass production. For the determination of transpiration-yield relations at the whole plant level we used wicked lysimeters at multiple irrigation levels associated with the soil water availability (25, 35, 70, 100%) and nitrogen fertilization (0, 50, 100, 150 kg N ha-1). Leaf transpiration and net photosynthesis were determined with a portable minicuvette system. The maximum mean transpiration rate was 10.6 mmol m-2 s-1 for well-watered plants, while the mean net photosynthesis was 9.1 μmol m-2 s-1. The cumulative transpiration of the plants during the growing seasons varied between 49 l (drought stressed) and 141 l (well-watered) per plant. The calculated transpiration coefficient for Fallopia over all of the treatments applied was 485.6 l kg-1. The transpiration-yield relation of Igniscum is comparable to rye and barley. Its growth performance making Fallopia a potentially good second generation bioenergy crop.

    Description: We quantified the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) interception in a high-density (HD) and a super high-density (SHD) or hedgerow olive system, by measuring the PAR transmitted under the canopy along transects at increasing distance from the tree rows. Transmitted PAR was measured every minute, then cumulated over the day and the season. The frequencies of the different PAR levels occurring during the day were calculated. SHD intercepted significantly but slightly less overall PAR than HD (0.57 ± 0.002 vs. 0.62 ± 0.03 of the PAR incident above the canopy) but had a much greater spatial variability of transmitted PAR (0.21 under the tree row, up to 0.59 in the alley center), compared to HD (range: 0.34–0.43). This corresponded to greater variability in the frequencies of daily PAR values, with the more shaded positions receiving greater frequencies of low PAR values. The much lower PAR level under the tree row in SHD, compared to any position in HD, implies greater self-shading in lower-canopy layers, despite similar overall interception. Therefore, knowing overall PAR interception does not allow an understanding of differences in PAR distribution on the ground and within the canopy and their possible effects on canopy radiation use efficiency (RUE) and performance, between different architectural systems.
