Description: A 56-day chamber simulation of Skylab was successfully completed. The atmosphere (5 psi, 70 percent oxygen, 30 percent nitrogen, 5 mm carbon dioxide) and medical features including a 21-day pre- and 18-day post-test medical protocols were closely simulated. No apparent crew health problems were induced by the atmosphere, semiclosed environment, or other test features; and no appreciable crew degradation appeared over this period. The chamber and associated systems performed without major problems.

Description: The seventh orbital flight of the Space Shuttle had as one of its primary objectives the testing of the vehicle's capability for proximity operations (defined as anytime the Orbiter is within 1000 feet of another satellite). The goals of these tests were to obtain flight data on different techniques for separation from, stationkeeping with, and approach and capture of a free-flying satellite. This included the acquisition of data on technique evaluation as to propellant usage, time required, crew workload, plume disturbance to the payload by the reaction control system, and jet plume impingement. The tests were also to provide data on the rendezvous radar and optical sighting devices performance in this environment. It is concluded that the Orbiter proved to be a very responsive vehicle that ws straightforward to fly in the vicinity of another satellite given the proper experience base with ground simulations.

Description: This is a review of the initial flight of the spaceship Columbia - the first of four test missions of the nation's space transportation system. Engineering test pilot/astronaut activity associated with operation, control, and monitoring of the spaceship are discussed. Demonstrated flying qualities and performance of the Space Shuttle are covered.

Description: A brief overview of the various Skylab systems is presented. Particular emphasis is placed on unique points of system design that were either new to space flight or had an effect on crew operations significantly different from that experienced during the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions. A summary of the opinions and experience of the three Skylab flightcrews in using these Skylab-unique systems is given. The designs that the crews considered completely successful as compared to the preflight expectations and those designs that turned out to be unsuitable and that should be approached differently in future missions are discussed. Differences in crew opinions about the same system are noted where appropriate, and spacecraft lessons learned by the flightcrews are summarized.
