    Description: Aquatic agricultural systems (AAS) are systems in which the annual production dynamics of freshwater and/or coastal ecosystems contribute significantly to total household income. Improving the livelihood security and wellbeing of the estimated 250 million poor people dependent on AAS in Bangladesh, Cambodia, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands and Zambia is the goal of the Worldfish Center-led Consortium Research Program (CRP), “Harnessing the development potential of aquatic agricultural systems for development.” One component expected to contribute to sustainably achieving this goal is enhancing the gender and wider social equity of the social, economic and political systems within which the AAS function. The CRP’s focus on social equity, and particularly gender equity, responds to the limited progress to date in enhancing the inclusiveness of development outcomes through interventions that offer improved availability of resources and technologies without addressing the wider social constraints that marginalized populations face in making use of them. The CRP aims to both offer improved availability and address the wider social constraints in order to determine whether a multi-level approach that engages with individuals, households and communities, as well as the wider social, economic and political contexts in which they function, is more successful in extending development’s benefits to women and other excluded groups. Designing the research in development initiatives to test this hypothesis requires a solid understanding of each CRP country’s social, cultural and economic contexts and of the variations across them. This paper provides an initial input into developing this knowledge, based on a review of literature on agriculture, aquaculture and gender relations within the five focal countries. Before delving into the findings of the literature review, the paper first justifies the expectation that successfully achieving lasting wellbeing improvements for poor women and men dependent on AAS rests in part on advances in gender equity, and in light of this justification, presents the AAS CRP’s conceptual framew

    Description: This study explored how climate-smart agricultural and aquaculture innovations may lead to more successful climate adaptation efforts and enhanced resilience for both men and women in households and across communities, as well as to improved and equitable outcomes in terms of income, nutrition and livelihood opportunities. Specifically, it investigated efforts to target women with household aquaculture innovations to understand (1) if such approaches enable women to use or benefit from them; (2) if and how usage impacts the sustained use of these innovations; and (3) if it would be possible to scale out these innovations to achieve large scale development outcomes.

    Description: The goal of WorldFish’s research on markets and value chains is to increase the benefits to resource-poor people from fisheries and aquaculture value chains by researching (1) key barriers to resource-poor men, women and other marginalized groups gaining greater benefits from participation in value chains, including barriers related to the availability, affordability and quality of nutrient-rich fish for resource-poor consumers; (2) interventions to overcome those barriers; and (3) mechanisms that are most effective for scaling up of value chain interventions. This paper aims to promote and document learning across WorldFish’s value chain research efforts in Asia and Africa. It has three main objectives: (1) to take stock of WorldFish’s past and ongoing research on value chains; (2) to draw out commonalities and differences between these projects; and (3) to provide a synthesis of some learning that can guide future work.

    Description: The feasibility of semi-intensive culture of Penaeus monodon in low saline environment was investigated by comparing the growth and production in low (0.16-6.52 ppt) and high (4.60-19.42 ppt) saline areas at two stocking densities (10.5 and 16 individuals/m super(2)). After 135 days of culture, yield of shrimp in low and high stocking densities was 1563.37 kg/ha and 2274 kg/ha, respectively, in low saline ponds, and 1173.00 and 1974.00 kg/ha, respectively in high saline ponds. Food conversion ratio (FCR, 1.31-1.58) and specific growth rate (SGR 21.04-21.19%) were higher in low saline ponds as compared to high saline ponds (FCR, 1.35-1.68; SGR, 19.22-19.88%). Growth of shrimp was satisfactory in low saline ponds even when salinity decreased after 60 days of culture to almost freshwater level (0.16 ppt) indicating the variability of semi-intensive culture of P. monodon in low saline environment.

    Description: This working paper is part of a review of aquaculture technologies and gender in Bangladesh in the period 1990 to 2014. It assesses how gender has been integrated within past aquaculture technology interventions, before exploring the gender dimensions associated with current approaches to transferring knowledge about homestead aquaculture technology. It draws out existing knowledge, identifies research gaps, and selects practices to build upon--as well as practices to move away from. The review examines the research and practice of WorldFish and other development partners in Bangladesh through consultations, a review of gray and published literature, and fieldwork. It aims to contribute to the development of aquaculture technology dissemination methodologies that strengthen and underpin women’s participation in aquaculture.

    Notes: A high frequency, low dark current, 1.3 μm metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector on GaAs is reported. The measured frequency response of this photodetector up to 10 GHz agrees with a model that assumes different collection times for electrons and holes.

    Notes: An InGaAs/GaAs strained-layer single quantum well waveguide-photodetector combination operating at a wavelength of 1.3 μm was fabricated on a GaAs substrate. An interdigitated metal-semiconductor-metal detector was deposited on top of the waveguide using Ti/Pt/Au for Schottky contacts. As expected, the responsivity of the detector increased with increasing single quantum well absorption in the waveguide and was sensitive to the polarization of the incident light. For TM polarization the responsivity of the detector was an order of magnitude lower at 1284 nm, compared to TE polarization, and exhibited weak dependence on wavelength, consistent with the transmission data. These results demonstrate for the first time a monolithically integrated 1.3 μm waveguide photodetector fabricated on a GaAs substrate.

    Notes: Cathodoluminescence scanning electron microscopy is utilized to investigate the stresses present underneath 0.4 μm gold layers deposited on GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs substrates. Using the known stress dependence of excitonic lines in quantum wells, the magnitude of stress is determined to be about 1 kbar. The stress-induced change in the refractive index, attributed to photoelastic effect, is about 0.01 for the structures studied in the present work.

    Notes: Comparison of Auger electron spectra obtained from intergranular and transgranular areas exposed on fracture surfaces of sintered YBa2Cu3O7−x specimens indicates that most grain-boundary surfaces are deficient in oxygen and rich in copper compared to the bulk. The thickness of this region of altered composition is estimated to be in the range of 15–50 A(ring). No evidence of segregation of impurities to grain boundaries was seen. The results suggest that the grain-boundary layer is nonsuperconducting and a likely contributor to the problem of low critical current densities in these materials. It is believed that carbon at grain boundaries which has been reported results from incomplete calcination in material which is slightly off stoichiometry.
