    Description: An inherent problem of conventional point-to-point WAN architectures is that they cannot translate optical transmission bandwidth into comparable user available throughput due to the limiting electronic processing speed of the switching nodes. This report presents the first solution to WDM based WAN networks that overcomes this limitation. The proposed Lightnet architecture takes into account the idiosyncrasies of WDM switching/transmission leading to an efficient and pragmatic solution. The Lightnet architecture trades the ample WDM bandwidth for a reduction in the number of processing stages and a simplification of each switching stage, leading to drastically increased effective network throughputs.

The principle of the Lightnet architecture is the construction and use of virtual topology networks, embedded in the original network in the wavelength domain. For this construction Lightnets utilize the new concept of lightpaths which constitute the links of the virtual topology. Lightpaths are all-optical, multihop, paths in the network that allow data to be switched through intermediate nodes using high throughput passive optical switches. The use of the virtual topologies and the associated switching design introduce a number of new ideas, which are discussed in detail.

    Notes: Abstract All-optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) backbones are believed to be a fundamental component in future high speed networks. Currently, the most pursued approach for Wide Area Networks (WANs) is wavelength routing, in which communication circuits are established between node pairs by means of lightpaths (paths of light) spanning one or more fiber-optic links. This approach has, however, two drawbacks. Since the number of wavelengths and links in a network is finite, not all node pairs can be connected via a dedicated lightpath directly. Consequently, some node pairs will communicate using a concatenation of lightpaths, which requires electronic switching of in transit information, loosing the advantages of optical transparency. Secondly, typically some form of (electronic) traffic grooming will be necessary to make efficient use of the fixed lightpath capacity. This paper proposes to design all-optical WANs using a novel approach, called photonic slot routing. With photonic slot routing, entire slots, each carrying multiple packets on distinct wavelengths, are switched transparently and individually, using available fast and wavelength non-sensitive devices. The advantage of using photonic slot routing is threefold. All node pairs in the network communicate all-optically. Traffic aggregation necessary to efficiently use the capacity of the wavelength channels is optically achieved. The solution is practical as it is based on proven optical technologies. In addition, through the use of wavelength non-sensitive devices the proposed WAN design yields intrinsic scalability in the number of wavelengths.

    Notes: Abstract This paper introduces a new model and methodological approach for dealing with the probabilistic nature of mobile networks based on the theory of random graphs. Probabilistic dependence between the random links prevents the direct application of the theory of random graphs to communication networks. The new model, termed Random Network Model, generalizes conventional random graph models to allow for the inclusion of link dependencies in a mobile network. The new Random Network Model is obtained through the superposition of Kolmogorov complexity and random graph theory, making in this way random graph theory applicable to mobile networks. To the best of the authors' knowledge, it is the first application of random graphs to the field of mobile networks and a first general modeling framework for dealing with ad‐hoc network mobility. The application of this methodology makes it possible to derive results with proven properties. The theory is demonstrated by addressing the issue of the establishment of a connected virtual backbone among mobile clusterheads in a peer‐to‐peer mobile wireless network. Using the Random Network Model, we show that it is possible to construct a randomized distributed algorithm which provides connectivity with high probability, requiring exponentially fewer connections (peer‐to‐peer logical links) per clusterhead than the number of connections needed for an algorithm with a worst case deterministic guarantee.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we consider very high-speed, connection-oriented communication in distributed systems where each node system has a limited-size queue for connection requests. An important example of this type of system is an HIPPI-based interconnection system of a supercomputer complex. For such systems, we present a distributed connection management policy and propose several possible service disciplines. We develop an analytic model to evaluate the interconnection system under different system configurations, connection management policies, and service disciplines. In this evaluation, we consider separately systems where nodes want to communicate with any one of a pool of identical servers, and systems where a node needs to access a specific one of a set of distinct servers.
