    Notizen: The formation of ion conics is discussed in terms of a model which permits an asymptotic determination of the ion distribution function. This model is applicable to a class of observed ion conic events where the ion energization is attributable to lower hybrid wave activity. A two-stage process is considered wherein the upward moving component of the ambient ion population is first subjected to a region of weak turbulence and is then allowed to drift adiabatically up the geomagnetic field. Identification of the ratio of ion thermal speed to mean wave speed as a small parameter leads to a uniformly valid solution of the quasilinear diffusion equation. The resulting analytic form for the ion conic is then available for further analytic work. Implications and limitations of the model will be discussed.

    Notizen: The Bond technique was used to measure the lattice parameter of the red transition-metal oxide, ReO3, as a function of temperature. At 298 K the lattice parameter is 3.7477 (1) Å. The thermal expansion is linear with temperature between 291 and 464 K and a linear coefficient of thermal expansion of 1.1 (1) × 10−6 K−1 was fit to the data.

    Notizen: Abstract The interaction of a rotating flow and a stationary surface is discussed for a second-order non-Newtonian liquid. Similarity solutions of the governing partial differential equations are obtained for the case of the outer flow in solid-body rotation. The results for the Newtonian case are compared with Bödewadt's series solution of this problem. The non-Newtonian solutions indicate that for certain values of the parameters characterizing the non-linear viscous response and normal stress effects a larger secondary flow is induced in the boundary layer than in the Newtonian case.

    Notizen: Abstract The intensity and lineshape of the Doppler-broadened 752.033-GHz (211 ← 202) rotational transition of H2O has been studied passively using a high-resolution two-stage heterodyne radiometer with single-sideband system noise temperature of 45,000 K. The purpose of the experiments was to demonstrate the observability at submillimeter wavelengths of a high-altitude rocket plume simulated by a laboratory H2O jet in a vacuum chamber. First-stage mixing was accomplished by means of a GaAs Schottky diode with first local-oscillator power supplied by a CO2-laser pumped formic-acid laser (761.61 GHz), generating and X-band IF signal. Second localoscillator power was provided by a tunable C-band source. One-MHz resolution capability was obtained by means of a 3-GHz waveguide cavity filter with only 9-dB insertion loss. In the H2O jet experiments, the center frequency of the line was determined to within 1 MHz of the previously reported value. A rotational temperature ∼ 75 K, a linewidth ∼5 MHz, and a Doppler shift ∼ 3 MHz (from a 45-degree rotation of the flow direction) were measured with the line-of-sight intersecting the jet axis at a distance downstream of 30 nozzle diameters. These absorption data were ogtained against continuum background radiation sources at temperatures of 1175 and 300 K.

    Notizen: Abstract The pricing problem where a company sells a certain kind of product to a continuum of customers is considered. It is formulated as a stochastic Stackelberg game with nonnested information structure. The inducible region concept, recently developed for deterministic Stackelberg games, is extended to treat the stochastic pricing problem. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a pricing scheme to be optimal are derived, and the pricing problem is solved by first delineating its inducible region, and then solving a constrained optimal control problem.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper presents a novel framework for developing globally convergent algorithms without evaluating the value of a given function. One way to implement such a framework for a twice continuously differentiable function is to apply linear bounding functions (LBFs) to its gradient function. The algorithm thus obtained can get a better point in each iteration without using a line search. Under certain conditions, it can achieve at least superlinear convergent rate 1.618 without calculating explicitly the Hessian. Furthermore, the strategy of switching from the negative gradient direction to the Newton-alike direction is derived in a natural manner and is computationally effective. Numerical examples are used to show how the algorithm works.
