Notes: [Auszug] The morphology of the crystalline aggregates varies widely and is related to the distance from the dyke margins. The dykes nearly lie flat and never exceed 2 m in thickness. Depending on the mode of crystallization three different zones can be distinguished (Fig. 1). (1) A marginal zone, including ...

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the microstructures of the antiperthites of the South Norwegian anorthosites strongly suggest an exsolution origin. In addition to the normal exsolution reactions responsible for most antiperthites, exsolution of potash feldspar in plagioclase may occur by a discontinuous mode of precipitation.

Notes: Abstract Xenolithic inclusions in gabbros exhibiting a layered structure and a gabbroic suite of minerals are shown to represent calcareous sediments that have been basified by the gabbroic magma. Mg, Fe and Ca have been added to the xenoliths; Si, Al and alkalies are subtracted.

Notes: Abstract Two lamprophyre-diabase associations on the south coast of Norway are described. The lamprophyres and the diabases contain feldspathic leucocratic segregations in the shape of ocelli, ocellar pipes, sheets, or irregular veins and schheren. The origin of the lamprophyres is considered to be related to the formation of the leucocratic segregations. It is believed that the behaviour of alkaline volatiles under the influence of tensional stress and gravity accounts for the differentiation.

Notes: Abstract The equilibrium precipitate formed by exsolution in alkali feldspar containing calcium in solid solution is a two-phase intergrowth of plagioclase and quartz. It is the kinetics of the precipitation, however, which decides whether or not this reaction will take place. It is shown that lamellar growth of plagioclase and quartz is only accomplished by the advancement of an incoherent boundary originating at an alkali feldspar — alkali feldspar boundary or at an interface between alkali feldspar and plagioclase.

Notes: Abstract Etching and optical methods have been applied to study the lineage structure of quartz crystals from the Swiss Alps. It is shown that lineage boundaries form during growth in crystals of high dislocation density by a rearrangement of dislocations in low angle boundaries. The boundaries usually consist of parallel lines and are supposed to be nearly pure tilt boundaries.

Notes: Abstract Misfit between primary (syngenetic) inclusions and pyrope host is usually due to differences in the coefficients of thermal expansion and compressibilities. It is shown that the misfit stresses are relieved by the generation and rearrangement of dislocations. Zones of plastic flow have been recognized around inclusions in pyropes from Bohemian garnet peridotites and in kimberlite pyropes from South Africa and Yakutia. The extent of plastic yield is determined by the history of the pyrope in the ductile regime. Implications for using the piezothermometric method of Rosenfeld and Chase (1961) which is based upon the elastic strain, are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Shock-melted rocks from the Fennoscandian shield commonly contain fragments of quartz which appear to represent paramorphs of quartz after lechatelierite and, therefore indicate very high melt temperatures, at or above 1700 °C. The presence of melt (glass) inclusions containing shrinkage bubbles in plagioclase microphenocrysts shows that the growth of this mineral took place in a fluid melt above the glass-transition temperature which in the glass from Dellen is estimated to approximately 900 °C. The morphology of plagioclase suggests that crystallization occurred at moderate degrees of supercooling and was similar to the crystallization history of melts derived by endogenous processes. Plagioclase growth in trapped melt inclusions resulted in reverse compositional zoning. Devitrification, i.e. crystallization below the glass-transition temperature, usually occurred by the formation of alkali feldspar spheralites.

Notes: Abstract The dislocation structures of minerals may give important information on the deformational history of rocks. Dislocations in pyrope-rich garnets are revealed by etching in hydrofluoric acid. Pyropes from Norwegian and Czech garnet peridotites characteristically display tangled arrangements and cell structures similar to those formed in metals and alloys in creep.

Notes: Abstract The colour of chromium-bearing pyrope-rich garnets may be red or green depending upon the Cr-O distance which varies with the chemical composition. Red garnets become green when the crystal field parameter δ0 for substitutional Cr3+ decreases below 17200 cm−1 corresponding to about 1970 Å.
