    Description: The Republic of Kiribati is a vast South Pacific island group with one of the largest exclusive economic zones (EEZs) in the world. Kiribati waters support a wealth of marine fisheries activities. These activities occur in oceanic, coastal and inshore environments and range from large, foreign, industrial-scale oceanic fishing operations to small-scale, domestic, inshore subsistence fisheries, aquaculture and recreational fisheries. Kiribati has developed a framework of domestic and international governance arrangements that are designed to sustainably manage its wealth of marine resources. The report provides background information for fisheries projects in Kiribati that aim to build food security, improve artisanal livelihoods and strengthen community engagement in fisheries governance. It provides information on the current status of Kiribati fishery resources (oceanic and coastal), their current governance and future challenges. Fish and fisher alike pay little heed to maritime boundaries and bureaucratic distinctions. This report covers both sides of the oceanic/coastal boundary because of the I-Kiribati communities’ interest in oceanic fisheries such as tuna and their heavy dependence on its fisheries resources for food security and economic development. The report focuses on two potential pilot sites for community-based fisheries management projects: North Tarawa and Butaritari.

    Notes: White clover (Trifolium repens L.) is experiencing increased levels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation in temperate pastures due to the depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer. Based on 17 morphological, morphogenetic and physiological attributes, this study analysed the consequences of enhanced UV-B on 26 white clover populations using principal components analysis (PCA). After 18 d of exposure to 13·3 kJ m−2 d−1 UV-B in controlled environments, UV-B significantly decreased above-ground and below-ground plant growth attributes, epidermal cell surface area and maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II photochemistry (Fv/Fm). Aspects of cell division and cell expansion both were negatively affected by UV-B. Stomatal density, specific leaf mass, root-to-shoot ratio and levels of UV-B-absorbing compounds increased in response to UV-B. In the multivariate analysis, the main dimension of UV-B sensitivity was characterized by changes in plant growth attributes. Alterations in partitioning within and between plant organs constituted a secondary tier of UV-B responsiveness. Plant characteristics related to UV-B tolerance included lower growth rate, smaller epidermal cell surface area and higher UV-B-induced levels of UV-B-absorbing compounds. The results suggest overall UV-B tolerance for slower-growing populations from less productive habitats with higher natural UV-B irradiance.

    Notes: This study used comparisons across nine populations of Trifolium repens (white clover) in conjunction with drought to examine physiological responses to ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B). Plants were exposed for 12 weeks to supplementation with 13.3 kJ m−2 d−1 UV-B, accompanied by 4 weeks of drought under controlled environmental conditions. UV-B increased the levels of UV-B-absorbing compounds and of flavonol glycosides and this effect was synergistically enhanced by water stress. These changes were more pronounced for the ortho-dihydroxylated quercetin, rather than the monohydroxylated kaempferol glycosides. UV-B increased leaf water potential (ψL) by 16% under drought and proline levels by 23% under well-watered conditions. The intraspecific comparisons showed that higher UV-B-induced levels of UV-B-absorbing compounds, of quercetin glycosides and of ψL were linked to lower plant productivity and to higher UV-B tolerance under well-watered conditions. These findings suggest that: (1) slow-growing T. repens ecotypes adapted to other stresses have higher capacity for physiological acclimation to UV-B; and (2) that these attributes also contribute to decreased UV-B sensitivity under drought.

    Notes: Abstract The importance of host-plant resistance of crop plants in the biological control of aphids and the formation of aphid biotypes is discussed. The rapid response of plant breeders to the formation of new aphid biotypes requires detailed knowledge on the mechanism of host-plant resistance. Current knowledge on the chemical basis of host-plant resistance to aphids is summarized. Of central importance to this relationship is the aphid-pectinase plant-pectin interdependence. Parallels between the mechanism of aphid-plant and pathogen-plant attack are pointed out and how aphid bacterial endo-symbiotes play a central role in host-plant selection.

    Notes: Morphological characteristics and intestinal content were analysed for five species of coexisting freshwater fishes in Thailand: Rasbora caudimaculata, Schistura desmotes, Dermogenys pusillus, Xenentodon cancila and Monopterus albus(all found in riffle habitats in Thai streams). Rasbora caudimaculata, S. desmotes and D. pusillus fed predominantly on ephemeropterans, hymenopterans and dipterans, X. cancila fed predominantly on fishes, and larger aquatic invertebrates such as Odonata, and M. albus fed on detritus as well as invertebrate prey such as crustaceans and Odonata. Intestine length, mouth height, mouth width, eye position and mouth orientation varied among all five species. Canonical analysis of discriminance of mouth height, width and intestine length showed a clear dispersion of species, which was supported by intestine content. Evolutionary processes leading to the present differences in morphological characters resulted in each of the five species consuming a different portion of the available resource base, thereby facilitating coexistence.

    Notes: : We studied the synergistic effect of surfactants on aeration characteristics and long-term stability of aerated mesophase. It was observed that bubble size and volume of air incorporated (overrun) depend to a small extent on the dynamic film tension and to a greater extent on the viscosity of the mesophase, both properties being functions of surfactant chemistry and concentration. The overrun of the aerated product decreased over time due to the diffusive transport of air to the atmosphere, leading to its destabilization. The relative rate of destabilization of the aerated mesophase (as function of surfactant composition) has been correlated with the diffusion rate of air from the bulk to the surface.
