Abstract A simple way of raising a viscous liquid from a tank is to pass a moving belt through it and to scrape off the liquid at a higher level. A reappraisal is made of van Rossum's analysis of his experiments on this method, and the results are presented in a form free from the objection that can be raised against the original working.
