Notes: A simple and rapid procedure for orientating electron diffraction patterns required for the simultaneous determination of the Burgers vectors of dislocations in twin related or coincidence site related crystals is described. The determination of the Burgers vectors of dislocations in twin related zinc crystals is used as an example of the procedure. The procedure is applicable to all crystal structures and is based on the detailed analysis of the rotations about the optical axis and goniometer tilt stage axis of an electron microscope required to produce desired diffraction patterns from the two crystals of interest. The analysis also illustrates the way in which the tensor notation may be used in elementary vector algebra applied to lattice geometry.

Notes: The density of coincidence sites in cubic crystal lattice planes in coincidence-site-related crystals with a multiplicity less than or equal to 31 has been investigated. A comprehensive table of lattice planes with a high density of coincidence sites for each of the twenty-two coincidence-site relationships is presented. In addition a complete list of the alternative ways of describing the twenty-two coincidence-site relationships as defined by Friedel in 1926 is presented.

Notes: Abstract A wide range of mirror plate butt welding conditions were used to join PVDF pipe to pipe and to an injection moulded fitting. The microstructures of the welds were characterized by microtomy and by transmitted light microscopy, and the mechanical properties by tensile testing. The results show that high integrity pipe to pipe joins can be produced for a relatively wide range of welding conditons, and that the integrity of pipe to fitting joins may be reduced because of the adverse influence of the moulded part on weld bead geometry.

Notes: Abstract Model ABS compounds have been used to investigate the effect of graft frequency and rubber particle size on microstructure and mechanical properties. Graft frequency was found to have a marked effect on the microstructure of ABS polymers and increasing the graft frequency resulted in an improvement in the dispersion of the rubber phase.

Notes: Abstract A polypropylene copolymer was injection-moulded using several processing conditions and with different gating systems to produce a range of typical spherulitic microstructures. In addition to internal weld lines, some specimens were joined to form external mirrorplate butt-welds. The effect of the different microstructures on the fatigue and impact properties as a function at two test temperatures of 23 and − 10° C are reported. The influence of the different microstructures resulted in significant differences in load-bearing ability.

Notes: Abstract Three different pipe-grade polyethylenes, in the form of one large and three small diameter pipe systems, have been tested at elevated temperatures, using constant and fluctuating internal pressure loadings that resulted in brittle fractures. The behaviour under fatigue of two of the three types of small diameter polyethylene pipes was substantially described by a cumulative damage model, whilst the third exhibited a fatigue weakness, an observation not previously reported. The performance of the large diameter pipes under fatigue was dominated by the presence of large voids in the pipe wall that arose from incorrect processing and resulted in premature failure. The sites of crack initiation in one material grade of the small diameter systems were examined in detail. In particular the size, position and composition of particles initiating fracture were determined. The maximum particle size on the fracture surface of the pipe was found to correlate reasonably well with a measure of pipe lifetime, as predicted by a fracture mechanics approach, and indicated that the lifetime of this one type of polyethylene pipe was dependent on the size of the inclusions initiating fracture.

Notes: Abstract The effect of reinforcing PVDF with short carbon fibres was studied by injection moulding commercially available and laboratory compounded materials, with the result that components with increased tensile strength and modulus were produced. The extent of the improvements in properties was influenced by the processing techniques used. In order to ascertain the practical applications of such a material, an investigation of the integrity of butt-fusion welds of the material both to itself and to the unfilled material, was carried out, and on the basis of the findings a procedure for jointing two filled components is proposed. The overall conclusion can be expressed as a strong vindication of the use of both filled and unfilled PVDF as practical engineering materials.

Notes: Abstract A polypropylene-based binder system was used to injection mould test bars containing 65 vol% aluminium powder. Specimens, 3 and 6 mm thick, made from these bars were used for pyrolytic binder removal experiments in static air and nitrogen. The development of a carefully defined experimental procedure for the determination of the heating rate at which binder removal can be carried out at a given temperature without the creation of macro defects is fully described. The use of isothermal heat treatments during pyrolysis are also considered and results are presented as temperature-heating rate diagrams for each atmosphere and thickness investigated. These diagrams show a lower and an upper boundary. Defect formation occurs if the temperature-heating rate relationship lies between the boundaries. Near optimum binder removal schedules deduced from each diagram have been experimentally verified.
