    Description: Polyculture trial of selected cultivable fin fishes was conducted at the Institute’s experimental fish farm Ikoyi, Lagos from April 1983 to January 1984. The species, Mugil spp; Tilapia spp; Hemichromis fasciatus and Elops lacerta gave a total annual production range of 1219 kg to 1441 kg per hectare (extrapolated). Tilapia species had the highest growth potential constituting 80% of the total harvest. Supplementary diet used was food left over (waste) from selected big hotels in Lagos. Elops lacerta (predator) recorded the highest average body weight of 415.88g while the lowest weight 62.14g, was recorded for Mugil spp. Tilapia spp and Hemichromis fasciatus had average body weights of 72.5g and 6.7 0g respectively.

    Description: Fish samples were collected from Lekki and Badagry lagoon and the Institute’s experimental fish farm, Lagos, from February 1983 to September 1984. Three thousand seven hundred and eighty six brooders and fingerlings rAnging between 3.5cm and 50.2cm in total length and weighing between 2.56g and 976,0g were examined. External parasites observed on Saratherodon galilaeus included monogenean trematodes, Gyrodactylus spp and Dactylogyrus spp; copepod, Argulus spp, and annelid (Piscilid) leeches on the body surface and gills. T. guineensis were infected by endoparasitic digenean trematodes and nematodes in the alimentary tract. Clarius gariepinus and Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus were infected with cestodes and nematodes. Infection was very high between October and August when the ranges of temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity and pH were 22.6-34.0oC, 1.95-9.2mg/1; 36-18.0%o; and 4.65-8.3 respectively. The values are within the favourable range for the survival of parasites (Plumb and Taylor 1976).

    Description: The first phase of the project (1978 –19850 on fish seed abundance in Nigerian coastal waters was completed and published in 1985 proceedings of Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON). The second phase (1986 –1989) explored further, breeding grounds, nursery and schooling areas and traditional fishing gears used by local fishermen in the collection of seeds. An assessment is made of the destructive effects of industrial pollutants, oil installations, erosion, modern coastal developments, and tides in the distribution and abundance of seeds within the estuaries, creeks lagoons coastal rivers and their tributaries. Analysis of data collected showed a drastic reduction of an estimated 100 million fish seeds, Ezenwa et al (1985) to 51.7 million at the end of 1989. Major factors found responsible for this situation include industrial pollutants from over 2000 industrial establishments located in the coastal cities of Lagos, Warri, Port Harcourt and Calabar; alarming retreat of the coastline due to erosion; modern coastal development and reclamation of coastal marches. Percentage composition of the six major fish groups, showed the predominance of seeds of shrimps and prawns with a total of 13.7 million (26.50%); followed by the catfishes, 12.4 million (23.98%); Tilapia group, 11.0 million (21.28½%); Mullets, 9.5 million (18.38%); predators 3.9 million (6.96%); and lastly the herbivorous group 1.5 million (2.90%). Water and soil parameters of the identified breeding grounds, nursery and schooling areas were determined. Areas of fine, coarse and medium sand particles were found to act as filteration beds for nursery grounds of mullets, and tilapia while prawns and shrimps prefer the muddy, silty areas of the lagoons, estuaries and creeks.

    Description: Culture trial of the Tiger Shrimp (Peneaus monodon) was carried out in one of the grow-out concrete tanks at Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research, Victoria Island, Lagos. A total of 264 post larvae of P. monodon (PL 30) produced at the Institute’s shrimp hatchery complex were used for the experiment which lasted for 157 days. Coppens Catco feed of 0.8 - 1.2mm size was used to feed the post larvae throughout the duration of the experiment. The results showed that the shrimps grew from an initial mean body weight of 1.763g at stocking to 19.538g at the end of the experiment. The daily growth rate was 0.113g/day while specific growth rate was 1.532 %. Food Conversion Ratio (FCR) was 3.362 while survival rate was 90%. The study has shown that P. monodon can be successfully cultured in concrete tanks. However further studies aimed at improving growth rate will be undertaken.

    Description: Climate change has the potential to severely impact coastal and inland environments and ecosystems, and by extension fisheries and aquaculture. Coastal regions of the world are already experiencing flooding due to rise in sea level. In recent times, salinization of coastal areas due to flooding from storm surges and high tidal influence has been observed. Aquaculture is a fast growing agri-business venture in Nigeria presently and many coastal communities derive their livelihood from it. The culture of freshwater fish species that are very sensitive to high salinity may be threatened leading to mortality of stocked fish and loss of livelihood for coastal population. Consequently, there is urgent need for development and domestication of the Silver catfish, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus that can tolerate higher salinity more than Mudcatfish (Clarias gariepinus). This will help mitigate the impact of salinization of coastal areas arising from sea water flooding on culture of fresh water fish species.

    Description: Gravid female broodstock of M. vollenhovenii were collected from Ogun River. Their body weights ranged from 17.2g, 22.4g and 17.4g while the total lengths ranged from 9.7cm-11.7cm. The broodstock were stocked in three plastic tanks and allowed to spawn naturally. Three spent female broodstock were stocked separately in plastic tanks containing six (6) litres of freshwater. They were fed trash fish twice daily at 5% body weight. The spent females started to develope eggs again in 21 days with full maturation at 35 days. The body weights after 35 days ranged from 8.5g-24.1g while the total lengths ranged from 11.4-11.9 cm. The result obtained have shown that spent female broodstock of M. vollenhovenii can become gravid again in plastic tanks in 35 days when fed fresh trash fish. This will ensure all year round production of broodstock for development of M.vollenhovenii.

    Description: The Atlantic Tarpon, Tarpon (Megalops) atlanticus is a marine fish of high commercial importance with a special fishery in western, central and south-western Atlantic Ocean where it is a very important game fish. The species provides sport fishery especially in the western Atlantic coast of America which has generated millions of dollars in tourism, employment and boat charters. Tarpon fishery in America is highly regulated and there are strict guidelines on capture, bag limits and fishing seasons. Tarpon puts up a spectacular fight when hooked, leaping up to 2-3m above water surface and landing with a smacking splash that can be heard one kilometer away. It is the leaping powers that make tarpon a favourite to anglers. In the coastal waters of south-west Nigeria especially for the natives of the coastal communities of Ondo State, T. atlanticus is a delicacy and of high economic value. Some local fishermen and fish farmers in the area stock Tarpon in their ponds purely for recreational purposes. Some of these tarpon farms were integrated with snack bars and served as tourist centres. Visitors including individuals and educational institutions frequent the fish farm during excursions and pay a stipulated fee per person as entry permit to the farm thereby generating more revenue to the farmer. This paper highlights the importance of Tarpon as a game fish and suggests strategies for development of its culture both as food fish and for ecotourism.

    Description: Water Recirculating Aquaculture system (WRAS) as a culture system can be simply configured to combine both mechanical and biological filteration mechanism. This system can be regarded as a fish factory being an intensive culture technology system with high-density stocking and carrying capacity. Recirculating systems has some production advantages over other culture systems especially in intensive production. This production system achieves good and stable water quality management and enables the farm manager to trouble shoot as management protocol is easier to determine in a more business manner. Challenges in running this system in Nigeria include poor design, irregular power supply alter failure, high cost of quality feed, poor water quality management and high cost of water quality kits. Similarly, unavoidable continuous daily stress on fish stocked, low biosecurity understanding and lack of expertise coupled with inadequate financing are common issues in running this system. Therefore, necessary by-pass protocols become necessary in the management of this system in Nigeria for profitable production.

    Description: Forty (40) broodstock of the black tiger shrimp, Penaeus. monodon, comprising of 16 males and 24 females were collected between November and December 2008 from three Nigerian Fishing Companies namely Karflex Fisheries Nigeria Limited, Honeywell Fisheries and ORC Nigeria Limited. The body weight ranged from 72.5 to 300g, total length from 24.0-34.0 cm and carapace length from 8.0-24.5cm. Abdominal length ranged from 10.3 - 16.0 cm, and telson length from 3.0-5.7cm. The stages of ovarian development ranged between 0 and 3.5 while the percentage of sperm carried by the females ranged from 0 to 100%. The broodstock were stocked in the maturation tanks in the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research shrimp hatchery and fed on squid to enhance gonadal development and maturation. Spawning of P. monodon was successfully carried out three times with an estimated production of one to two million nauplii at each spawning. Three hundred and twenty (320) post larvae (PL30) were stocked in concrete tanks for broodstock development. The post larvae have presently attained juvenile stage with average body weight of 16.01g. The availability of broodstock of P. monodon in Nigerian coastal waters will ensure successful hatchery production of post larvae for stocking of ponds leading to the development of shrimp farming.
