Notes: We have investigated Be diffusion during molecular beam epitaxial growth of GaAs/AlGaAs graded index separate confinement heterostructure laser structures using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). For growth at 700 °C we find that Be from the p-type AlGaAs cladding layer diffuses into the quantum well and beyond. As a result, the p-n junction is displaced from the heterojunction. The extent of Be diffusion is found to depend on the dopants in the graded index (GRIN) regions adjoining the GaAs active layer. When the GRIN segments are left intentionally undoped, Be diffuses through the entire p-side GRIN, the quantum well active and a significant portion of the n-side GRIN. However, when the GRIN regions are doped, respectively, with Be and Si on the p and n sides, the displacement of the p-n junction caused by Be diffusion is significantly reduced. Assuming that Be diffuses from a constant source at the surface into a n-type layer as a singly charged interstitial donor, our analysis predicts that increasing the doping of the n layer retards the diffusion of Be while that of the p layer enhances it. Further, including the electric field of the p-n junction in the model leads to peaks and inflections resembling those observed in the experimental SIMS profiles. In view of Be-related oxygen contamination and Be diffusion on the p-side GRIN region, Be should be dispensed with on the p side, however, Si addition on the n side is beneficial as it minimizes Be diffusion and p-n junction displacement.

Notes: Phase-shifted distributed-feedback (PSDFB) lasers with multiple phase-shift regions are proposed to reduce the effect of spatial hole burning in conventional PSDFB lasers where a single phase shift leads to a highly nonuniform axial distribution of the mode intensity. We analyze multiple phase-shift PSDFB lasers by solving numerically the coupled-wave equations. Our results show that the use of even two phase-shift regions can substantially reduce the axial inhomogeneity of the mode intensity. Although the gain margin is generally reduced by the use of multiple phase shifts, it is still large enough for most practical purposes if the phase shifts are suitably optimized.

Notes: The fabrication and performance characteristics of 1.3-μm InGaAsP distributed feedback (DFB) double-channel planar buried heterostructure (DCPBH) laser are reported. The lasers utilize a second-order grating with a periodicity of ∼3800 A(ring) for frequency selective feedback. The lasers have threshold currents in the range 25–35 mA at 30 °C. The lasing mode shifts to longer wavelengths with increasing temperature at 1 A(ring)/°C. The dynamic linewidth under 40-mA current modulation is ∼1 A(ring). The cw linewidth at an output power of 1 mW is ∼90 MHz. A monolithically integrated thermoelectric-controlled laser diode utilizing the DFB-DCPBH laser structure has been fabricated. The emission frequency of the laser can be continuously tuned by ±4 A(ring) using 50-mA controller current.

Notes: Summary Griseofulvin has been shown to block mitosis in the fungusBasidiobolus ranarum. A wide range of metabolic inhibitors were used to investigate the relationship between growth rate and mitotic index. On the basis of such experiments inhibitors could be divided into two groups; the first affect the cell during the interphase period, the second affect the cell during mitosis. Griseofulvin is comparable with other known antimitotic agents in that it increases the mitotic index when the organisms growth rate is decreased.

Notes: Abstract Fungal colonies were stained with a fluorescent brightner, Calcofluor White M2R New. When viewed using ultraviolet light certain hyphal regions showed intense fluorescence, whereas others showed a lower intensity fluorescence. The apical 10 μm of leadingBotrytis cinerea hyphae showed intense fluorescence. Developing septa and side branches also showed this intense localised fluorescence. Calcofluor staining of hyphae and their subsequent growth illustrated the phenomenon of tip extension.

Notes: Abstract 2′-Deoxyadenosine (2 mM), a DNA inhibitor, was used to synchronize DNA synthesis in cultures of Neurospora crassa lys 3. The cultures recovered spontaneously from the inhibitor which had little or no effect on the synthesis of RNA, protein or carbohydrate or on the specific growth rate of the mould. The degree of ‘synchrony’ of DNA synthesis obtained with 2′-deoxyadenosine varied directly with the organism's specific growth rate when the latter was altered by temperature changes. A direct relationship was observed between the rate of synthesis of DNA during the S period and the organism's specific growth rate. Conidia of Neurospora crassa lys 3 were separated into different density classes using urografin gradients; the separation treatment did not have an appreciable effect on the subsequent germination or growth of conidia. Populations of large, less dense conidia produced germ tubes more rapidly and more synchronously than populations of small, dense conidia. Cultures inoculated with the large conidia displayed continuous synthesis of RNA and protein but discontinuous synthesis of DNA.

Notes: Abstract Growth of a temperature sensitive colonial mutant (cot 1) of Neurospora crassa was compared with a wild type strain. The hyphal growth unit (the ratio between mycelial length and number of branches) of the wild type was not appreciably altered by temperature and there was a direct relationship between the specific growth rate (α) of these mycelia and their mean hyphal extension rate (E). The specific growth rate of cot 1 increased by about the same relative amount as the wild type between 15° and 30°C. Cot 1 grew and branched normally at 15° and 25°C but at 30°C the hyphal growth unit and mean hyphal extension rate of the mutant mycelia were reduced. Thus, between 15–30°C the ratio, E/α was constant for the wild type but not for cot 1. The effect of temperature and temperature shifts on extension zone length (Z), extension zone expansion time (Z i ) and branching of leading hyphae of mature colonies were also studies. It is suggested that branching is governed by a mechanism which regulates the linear growth rate of hyphae; the cot 1 mutation may have a direct effect on wall extension or affect linear growth rate indirectly due to an influence on the transport of precursors to the tip.

Notes: Abstract Trichoderma reesei (Q.M. 9414) was grown in a vertical glass column filled with a mixture of glass beads and cellulose. The column was aerated and maintained at 25° C. A carbon-free nutrient solution, or nutrient solution plus glucose, was passed down the column at a constant flow rate for several 100 h. The effluent solution was collected in a refrigerated fraction collector and assayed for carboxymethylcellulase activity, β-glucosidase activity, extracellular protein and reducing sugar. The pH of the effluent solution and the CO2 content of the effluent gas were also, measured. At the end of one experiment the column was dismantled and the fungus, glass beads and residual cellulose examined by scanning electron microscopy. A mathematical model was formulated by assuming that the column could be approximated to a series of wellmixed flow-through compartments. The model was used to simulate the dynamics of the system and the results generated gave a reasonable qualitative description of some of the experimental results.
