    Notes: Abstract Rat intestinal 15 kDa protein (I-15P) is highly homologous to porcine gastrotropin. We studied the occurrence, distribution and subcellular localization of I-15P in the entire rat body, using the immunocytochemistry to localize protein andin situ hybridization to localize mRNA. Both techniques demonstrated the expression of I-15P in the enterocytes of ileum, luteal cells of ovary and a subpopulation of steroid-endocrine cells of adrenal gland. Immuno-electron microscopy further demonstrated that I-15P is localized in both the cytoplasmic and nuclear matrix regions of these cells. The present results suggest roles of I-15P not only in the transport of bile salts but also in the metabolisms of certain steroid hormones.

    Notes: Abstract We studied the occurrence and localization of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in rat salivary glands using a specific monoclonal antibody. It was shown that the extract of rat salivary glands has a pronounced stimulatory activity on the growth of bovine capillary endothelial cells, which is blocked by the addition of an antibody against bFGF. The concentration of bFGF in the submandibular/sublingual gland, as determined by radioimmunoassay, was ∼80% that in the brain. Immunocytochemistry revealed bFGF-immunoreactivity localized primarily in the epithelial cells lining the striated ducts and excretory ducts of the parotid, sublingual and submandibular glands. In addition, intense bFGF-immunoreactivity was observed in the granular convoluted tubule of the submandibular gland, localized predominantly in the agranular pillar cells, which lay in small numbers among the majority of weakly immunostained cells containing many apical secretory granules. At the electron-microscopic level, the immunoreactive material was distributed diffusely in the cytoplasmic matrix and nuclei of all immunoreactive cells, whereas it was absent from all cytoplasmic organelles including the secretory granules. These results indicate that bFGF is localized in different cellular and subcellular compartments from those of other growth factors in the duct system of rat salivary glands.

    Notes: Summary Spot 35 protein is a Ca-binding protein originating from the rat cerebellum; it is now referred to spot 35-calbindin. This protein is expressed in immature pituicytes of the neurohypophyseal anlage in the E11–E18 rat embryo. The gene expression of spot 35-calbindin was detected by in-situ hybridization analysis only at stage E11–E12. Profiles of spot 35-positive nerve fibers of a neurosecretory nature were found in anlage at stage E16. At this stage, some immature pituicytes are partially immunopositive for spot 35-calbindin only in their peripheral cytoplasm; others are immunonegative. At birth and thereafter through adulthood, abundant nerve fibers are the sole structures immunoreactive for spot 35-calbindin; all the pituicytes are immunonegative, resulting in a light-microscopic appearance of numerous immunonegative round profiles, corresponding to pituicytes, and capillaries embedded in the granularly immunostained neurohypophysis. The present findings suggest that, during specific embryonic stages, immature pituicytes exert some as yet unidentified roles related to Ca-mediated functions involving the expression of spot 35-calbindin.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das dielektrische Verhalten von Polyacrylnitril wird über den Frequenzbereich von 100 Hz bis 2 MHz und für Temperaturen von −70° bis +150° C untersucht. Dabei konnte nur eine dielektrische Absorption festgestellt werden. Im Vergleich mit Ergebnissen viskoelastischer Messungen ist zu schließen, daß die dielektrische Absorption einer polaren Orientierung auf mikro-Brownscher Bewegung der Segmente beruht. DieColesche Darstellung läßt sich befriedigend auf die Messungen anwenden und die Parameter (ε 0-ε ∞) und $$\bar \beta $$ für jede Temperatur lassen sich bestimmen. Beide Parameter steigen mit der Temperatur und erreichen asymptotische Werte.
    Notes: Summary The dielectric properties of polyacrylonitrile were measured over frequencies from 100 c/s to 2 Mc/s and temperatures from −70° C to 150° C, where only one dielectric absorption could be identified. In comparison with the result of visco-elastic measurement of polyacrylonitrile, it is concluded that the dielectric absorption will be attributed to the dipolar orientation related to the mierobrownian motion of segment.Cole andCole's circular arc law was satisfactorily applied to the data, andCole's parameter, (ε 0−ε ∞) and $$\bar \beta $$ were determined at each temperature. (ε 0−ε ∞) and $$\bar \beta $$ increase with the rise of temperature and reach to asymptotic values.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Anwendbarkeit des Prinzips der Zeit-Temperatur-Superposition auf dielektrische Relaxationsphänomene wurde an verschiedenen Hochpolymeren im elastischen wie im glasigen Zustand geprüft. Für ihreα-Absorption im elastischen Zustand ist dieses Prinzip gewöhnlich anwendbar bei Temperaturen, wesentlich höher als der Glastransformationspunkt. Für dieβ-Absorption im Glaszustand ist es dagegen anwendbar bei Temperaturen, die niedriger als die Glastransformationstemperatur liegen. In partiell kristallinen Hochpolymeren aber ist es nur anwendbar für ausreichend getemperte Proben, weil die bei steigender Temperatur eintretende Kristallisation zu einer Verbreiterung der Form derα-Absorption führt. Die Verteilungskurven der Relaxationszeiten im elastischen Zustand wurden für diese Polymere ausgewertet. Als Ergebnis fand sich, daß die Verteilungskurve der Relaxationszeiten von Polymeren mit guter Kristallinität gewöhnlich breiter als die von Materialien mit schlechter Kristallinität ist.
    Notes: Summary The applicability of the time-temperature superposition principle on the dielectric relaxation phenomena was checked on several kinds of high polymers in the elastic state as well as in glassy state. In case of theα-absorption observed in elastic state, the time-temperature superposition principle is usually applicable at temperatures much higher than the so-called glass transition temperature. On the contrary, in case of theβ-absorption, observed in glassy state, the super-position principle is usually applicable at temperatures much lower than the so-called glass transition temperature. In the semi-crystalline polymers, however, the superposition principle is applicable only on the sample which is annealed enough, because the development of crystallization with increasing temperature leads to the broadening of the shape of the absorption. The distribution curves of relaxation times in elastic state was calculated on these polymers. As a result, it was made known that the distribution curve of relaxation times of the polymer with good crystallizability is usually broader than that of the polymers with bad crystallizability.

    Notes: We have developed a new method to measure the true temperature of the polymer melt and its three-dimensional distribution of a shot stored in the reservoir during injection. By means of this method, it is demonstrated that the temperature distribution of the polymer melt stored in the reservoir is strongly dependent on the setup molding conditions, the polymer investigated, and the geometry of the screw used. Further, it is noted qualitatively that there are two major effects of screw geometry on the temperature distribution of polymer melts. One, which governs strongly the temperature in the high temperature zone, is shear heat generated within the polymer itself in the metering zone of the screw during the transporting process. The second is the ability to preheat and plasticate the polymer in the compression zone, which is indispensable for uniform plastication.

    Notes: A new procedure has been developed to measure the temperature distribution of the polymer melts along the screw axis during injection by using a small sheath thermocouple. At the same time, the effects of molding conditions on temperature distribution has been studied. The temperature distribution of the polymer melt along the screw axis during injection can be obtained from the difference between the standard temperature profile and the temperature profile of the polymer melt with unknown and non-uniform temperature measured under the same rate of injection. The temperature of a polymer melt within a shot is not uniform. The difference between the maximum and the minimum temperature within a shot may exceed 10°C in some cases. There are two major factors which govern the effects of molding conditions on the temperature distribution of the polymer melts during injection. The first is the amount of shear heating in the metering zone. The second is the amount of heat absorbed into the polymer in the compression and feed zones.
