    Description: Binding of particulate and dissolved organic matter in the water column by marine gels allows sinking and cycling of organic matter into deeper water of the Red Sea and other marine water bodies. A series of four offshore profiles were made at which concentrations of bacteria, algae, particulate transparent exopolymer particles (p-TEP), colloidal transparent exopolymer particles (c-TEP), and the fractions of natural organic matter (NOM), including biopolymers, humic substances, low molecular weight neutrals, and low molecular weight acids were measured to depths ranging from 90 to 300 m. It was found that a statistically-significant relationship occurs between the concentrations of p-TEP and bacteria while a minimal, non-significant relationship between p-TEP and algae occurs. This likely reflects the low abundance of larger algal species in the study region. Variation in the biopolymer fraction of NOM in relationship to TEP and bacteria suggests that extracellular discharges of polysaccharides and proteins from the bacteria and algae are occurring without immediate abiotic assembly into p-TEP. In the water column below the photic zone, TOC, bacteria, and biopolymers show a generally common rate of reduction in concentration, but p-TEP decreases at a diminished rate, showing that it persists in moving organic carbon deeper into the water column despite consumption by bacteria.

    Notes: We describe the development of a new scale designed to measure service quality perceptions of retail bank customers. Empirical studies were performed in two waves. First, qualitative research was undertaken in the form of seven focus groups and 39 one-to-one interviews. These produced 963 text items that described customers' service quality perceptions. These were categorised against the technical and functional service quality schema proposed by Grönroos. Then, a three-phase, four-sample, quantitative study was undertaken to derive a quantitative measure of technical and functional service quality. We have developed and validated a new 21-item scale comprising four dimensions: service system quality, behavioural service quality, service transactional accuracy, and machine service quality. We found that customers evaluate SQ at two levels: organisational and transactional. The parsimony, reliability and validity of the scale suggest this is a measure of high utility to the banking industry.

    Notes: This study reports an empirical test of two involvement scales: Zaichkowsky's personal involve-ment inventory (PII) and Kapferer and Laurent's consumer involve-ment profile (CIP). The purpose of this study is to identify whether these two scales are applicable to financial services. Eight financial services are investigated: the use of a cheque book, overdraft facility, the use of Switch services, the use of a cash machine, savings account, investment services, mortgage services, and personal loan. The empirical findings show that the two scales indicate different levels of involvement in the eight financial services. The PII measure indicates that mortgage, investment and cash machine use are high involvement services. The use of savings account, personal loan, a chequebook, overdraft facility, and Switch services are found to be medium involvement services. The CIP shows that investment, mortgage, and savings accounts are rated as high involve-ment services. Personal loans, overdraft facilities, Switch card, cash machine, and chequebook usage are in the middle range of involvement. Being a multidimen-sional scale, the CIP provides more data about involvement. More investigation is needed in order to understand the links between consumer involvement in financial services and customer behaviour. The authors conclude with recom-mendations for further research into consumer involvement in financial services and its effect on bank customer behaviour.

    Notes: Salicornia bigelovii Torr. with increased precision if progress is to be made in adapting this halophyte as a conventional oilseed crop for direct seawater irrigation in coastal areas of arid regions. The P nutrition of salicornia was studied by using the nutrient solution technique in the greenhouse. The culture solutions were seawater, enriched to 1/2-strength modified Hoagland's solution [pH = 6.2 ± 0.2; electrical conductivity (EC) = 54 ± 2 dSm−1], and P treatments ranging from 0 to adequate amounts of P for full growth. All stages of deficiency symptoms were observed at harvest, ranging from stunted growth, necroses, purplish coloration, chlorosis, and dark bluish-green coloration to no symptoms. Dry and fresh weight of the tops were plotted against soluble P and total P values to give plant nutrient calibration curves that were fitted to the composite growth model by the least squares procedure. On the basis of the curve sharpness coefficient and range parameter output values and ease of sampling, semiwoody internodes, matured internodes and soluble P concentration were selected from the five plant parts sampled and the two forms of P determined as the best combination to diagnose the P status of Salicornia. About 480 mg kg−1 of soluble P in semiwoody internode tissue was tentatively set as the critical concentration for growth of the salicornia. The corresponding value for total P was set at 780 mg kg−1.

    Notes: Abstract Littoral materials collected from the intertidal zone along the coast of Kuwait City were associated with much higher numbers of oil-utilizing microorganisms than inshore and offshore water samples. Animate materials viz. epilithic biomass, cyanobacterial mats and roots of higher plants were richer in such microorganisms than inanimate materials, e.g. littoral sand, rock pieces, shells and others. Those numbers remained highest during the autumn, winter and spring and decreased dramatically during the hot summer. By far, the predominant indigenous oil-utilizing bacterium in the marine environment of Kuwait was Acinetobacter calcoaceticus. Less dominant organisms included Micrococcus sp., nocardioforms and others. Coast-immobilized strains of A. calcoaceticus and Micrococcus sp. had a higher hydrocarbon degradation potential than planktonic strains of the same organisms. It was concluded that marine coasts have a much higher potential for oil biodegradation than the water body.

    Notes: Abstract Aquatic plants were collected from different localities in the Al-Hammar marsh, southern Iraq, during late spring 1985. The marsh water is oligohaline. Typha angustata, Potamogeton pectinatus and Phragmites australis were the most abundant species in the study sites. The chemical composition of 15 aquatic plants in the study sites are given and compared with soil and water characters. These plants indicate variations among the species. All plants contain higher amounts of K than Na, while the opposite is found in the water. The Ca contents of plants and soil are higher than Mg.

    Description: Eulimnogammarus verrucosus is an amphipod endemic to the unique ecosystem of Lake Baikal and serves as an emerging model in ecotoxicological studies. We report here on a survey sequencing of its genome as a first step to establish sequence resources for this species. From a single lane of paired-end sequencing data, we estimated the genome size as nearly 10 Gb and we obtained an overview of the repeat content. At least two-thirds of the genome are non-unique DNA, and a third of the genomic DNA is composed of just five families of repetitive elements, including low-complexity sequences. Attempts to use off-the-shelf assembly tools failed on the available low-coverage data both before and after removal of highly repetitive components. Using a seed-based approach we nevertheless assembled short contigs covering 33 pre-microRNAs and the homeodomain-containing exon of nine Hox genes. The absence of clear evidence for paralogs implies that a genome duplication did not contribute to the large genome size. We furthermore report the assembly of the mitochondrial genome using a new, guided “crystallization” procedure. The initial results presented here set the stage for a more complete sequencing and analysis of this large genome.

    Description: The Egyptian aquaculture industry provides more than 100,000 full-time or part-time jobs and produces the country’s least-expensive farmed animal protein. Thus, aquaculture plays an important role in both sustaining livelihoods and improving the diet quality and nutritional health of Egyptians, including a significant proportion of the 25.5% who are resource-poor. Recognizing this dual role, WorldFish has promoted sustainable growth in Egyptian aquaculture for more than 20 years. Through its work, WorldFish has identified a lack of quality data about fish consumption preferences and practices. Eager to fill this knowledge gap, WorldFish partnered with the Environment and Development Group (EDG) to study consumption of fish, red meat and poultry among the resource-poor in Egypt. This study aimed to characterize current consumer preferences for and consumption patterns of animal-source foods, comparing red meat, poultry and fish. The resulting data is meant to contribute to a better understanding of what drives demand for fish among the resource-poor in Egypt, allowing value chain actors to more successfully market their products to this segment of the population.
