    Notes: A constitutive equation for computing particle concentration and velocity fields in concentrated monomodal suspensions is proposed that consists of two parts: a Newtonian constitutive equation in which the viscosity depends on the local particle volume fraction and a diffusion equation that accounts for shear-induced particle migration. Particle flux expressions used to obtain the diffusion equation are derived by simple scaling arguments. Predictions are made for the particle volume fraction and velocity fields for steady Couette and Poiseuille flow, and for transient start-up of steady shear flow in a Couette apparatus. Particle concentrations for a monomodal suspension of polymethyl methacrylate spheres in a Newtonian solvent are measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging in the Couette geometry for two particle sizes and volume fractions. The predictions agree remarkably well with the measurements for both transient and steady-state experiments as well as for different particle sizes.

    Notes: Using a mass analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectrometer, the spectra of the monomer, dimer, and trimer of sodium were measured. Intense dimer signals both at the ionization threshold and at Rydberg resonances of the monomer were observed. Below the adiabatic threshold of the dimer, a trimer spectrum which showed vibrational progressions similar to those of the dimer was also recorded. In both cases, the high energy edge of the heavier cluster was shifted to a lower energy compared with that of the lighter cluster. The monomer time-of-flight spectrum at the Rydberg resonances was diffuse, while the time-of-flight spectrum of the dimer was sharp and intense. Based on the continuity of oscillator strength and further energetic analysis, we conclude that the dimer signal at the Rydberg resonances of the monomer originated from collisional association between a Rydberg state atom and a ground state atom. Similarly, the trimer signal was from the combination between a Rydberg state dimer and a ground state atom. The combined product from collision was in a Rydberg state that can be field ionized during MATI detection. This work offers direct experimental evidence for the formation of high Rydberg state species through collisional recombination. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The direction of the transition dipole moment of nitrobenzene between 230 and 250 nm was determined by orienting gas-phase molecules in a strong, uniform electric field. Oriented nitrobenzene was photodissociated with linearly polarized light, and the NO fragments were detected by resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI). When the polarization direction of the photolysis laser was perpendicular (rather than parallel) to the orientation field, a 44% enhancement in the NO signal was observed. This implies a predominantly perpendicular relationship between the transition dipole and the permanent dipole. However, the experimentally observed enhancement falls below that expected of a pure perpendicular transition, indicating the presence of a second potential-energy surface that is simultaneously accessed through a parallel transition. Quantitative analysis indicates that the parallel transition contributes 20% of the overall oscillator strength. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract As a preparation for studying quantum models, we analyze unusual features of Einstein's theory of gravitation in a three-dimensional space-time. In three dimensions, matter curves space-time only locally and the gravitational field has no dynamical degrees of freedom. The standard correspondence of Einstein's theory with Newton's theory breaks down. A dust distribution moves without any geodesic deviation between the particles. The cosmological models and relativistic stars behave in a qualitatively different way from their Newtonian counterparts. These features are important for the correct understanding of mini-superspace models.

    Description: Biofilm formation by Bacillus subtilis is a communal process that culminates in the formation of architecturally complex multicellular communities. Here we reveal that the transition of the biofilm into a nonexpanding phase constitutes a distinct step in the process of biofilm development. Using genetic analysis we show that B. subtilis strains lacking the ability to synthesize pulcherriminic acid form biofilms that sustain the expansion phase, thereby linking pulcherriminic acid to growth arrest. However, production of pulcherriminic acid is not sufficient to block expansion of the biofilm. It needs to be secreted into the extracellular environment where it chelates Fe3+ from the growth medium in a nonenzymatic reaction. Utilizing mathematical modeling and a series of experimental methodologies we show that when the level of freely available iron in the environment drops below a critical threshold, expansion of the biofilm stops. Bioinformatics analysis allows us to identify the genes required for pulcherriminic acid synthesis in other Firmicutes but the patchwork presence both within and across closely related species suggests loss of these genes through multiple independent recombination events. The seemingly counterintuitive self-restriction of growth led us to explore if there were any benefits associated with pulcherriminic acid production. We identified that pulcherriminic acid producers can prevent invasion by neighboring communities through the generation of an “iron-free” zone, thereby addressing the paradox of pulcherriminic acid production by B. subtilis.
