Notes: The ontogeny of haematopoiesis in the perciform fish, spot Leiostomus xanthurus, differed from that reported as the norm for fishes, as exemplified by the cypriniform zebrafish Danio rerio, and observed in the batrachoidiform oyster toadfish Opsanus tau. Erythropoiesis in spot was first evident in the head kidney of yolk-sac larvae 3 days after hatching (DAH). No embryonic intermediate cell mass (ICM) of primitive stem cells or blood islands on the yolk were apparent within embryos. Erythrocytes were first evident in circulation near the completion of yolk absorption, c. 5 DAH, when larvae were c. 2·0 mm notochord length (LN). Erythrocyte abundance increased rapidly with larval development for c. 14 to 16 DAH, then became highly variable following changes in cardiac chamber morphology and volume. Erythrocytic haemoglobin (Hb) was not detected within whole larvae until they were 12 DAH or c. 3·1 mm LN, well after yolk and oil-globule absorption. The Hb was not quantified until larvae were 〉47 DAH or 〉7 mm standard length. The delayed appearance of erythrocytes and Hb in spot was similar to that reported for other marine fishes with small embryos and larvae. In oyster toadfish, a marine teleost that exhibits large embryos and larvae, the ICM and Hb were first evident in two bilateral slips of erythropoietic tissue in the embryos, c. 5 days after fertilization. Soon thereafter, erythrocytes were evident in the heart, and peripheral and vitelline circulation. Initial haematopoiesis in oyster toadfish conformed with that described for zebrafish. While the genes that code for the development of haematopoiesis are conserved among vertebrates, gene expression lacks phylogenetic pattern among fishes and appears to conform more closely with phenotypic expression related to physiological and ecological influences of overall body size and environmental oxygen availability.

Notes: MBE-grown gallium arsenide epitaxial layers on silicon, with thicknesses between 0.1 and 8.1 μm, have been studied using a simple rotating polariser multiple-angle-of-incidence ellipsometer. From these data, information on the roughness of the surfaces of the layers and the anisotropy of the refractive index of the layers has been obtained. The results are compared with data obtained on the same samples using scanning electron microscopy and conventional spectroscopic ellipsometry.

Notes: The published Coulter Counter method for measuring particle size distribution of the discrete phase in rubber-modified polystyrene is shown to be subject to serious limitations, especially when the data generated are used to compute discrete phase volume fractions. The source of error is time-dependent swelling of the particles in DMF which is used to isolate them from the polystyrene matrix for the counting operation.

Notes: An improved Coulter Counter procedure is described for determining the size distribution and volume fraction of the elastomeric discrete phase in high-impact polystyrene. The method isolates the discrete phase from a dispersion of the whole polymer in DMF by centrifugation and redisperses the discrete phase in an aqueous surfactant solution, thus allowing the particles to deswell and resume the dimensions they had in the polystyrene matrix. By measuring a Coulter Counter size distribution on the aqueous dispersion, a discrete-phase volume fraction can be reliably derived for the original impact polystyrene. The method is rapid and precise.

Notes: The anomalous temperature dependence of the linewidth of the νs(H2O) symmetric stretch vibration in hexa-aquo metal (II) hexafluorosilicate (IV) salts is discussed in terms of anharmonic interactions. It is shown that the main contribution to the linewidth is an elastic scattering process between νs(H2O) and the torsional vibration of the water molecules leading to a pure vibrational dephasing. Contributions to the linewidth due to inelastic decay into other vibrational states are also discussed.

Notes: Diamantane (C14H20) is a molecular solid which has a second order phase transition at 35K driven by a Raman-active soft-mode. There has been some controversy regarding the symmetry of soft-mode and it is shown that this must be triply degenerate. Possible space groups of the low temperature phase are presented.

Notes: The Raman spectrum of trigonal (NH4)2 TiF6 between room temperature and 10 K has been measured in the lattice region of the spectrum. All the four modes predicted by group theory have been observed and tentative assignments are proposed. No phase transition has been observed down to the lowest temperatures.
