Abstract Detailed observations of volumetric changes which occurred during the cure of a vinyl ester resin system have led to the definition of an alternative cycle which involves the same temperatures as the original cycle but in which the recommended overall time of cure is reduced by some 75%. Flexural and tensile strengths and moduli, thermal expansion characteristics, densities and hygrothermal properties of specimens produced according to each cycle are closely similar. The mechanical properties of the same resin reinforced with glass cloth and prepared according to the two cycles were also closely similar. It is concluded that there is considerable scope for applying observations of the volumetric curing characteristics of a resin system to develop a cycle in which (i) the potential of a given formulation is fully realized and (ii) the product is manufactured as economically as possible.
