Kurzfassung: This book highlights Indian scientific endeavours and contributions to answering the vast multitude of questions posed by our changing environment. The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) explores Earth’s history and dynamics using deep ocean drilling platforms to recover the data locked inside seafloor sediments and rocks. Since 2009, Indian scientists have been actively engaged in these expeditions. Scientists from various Earth Science disciplines have seized this opportunity to offer their expertise in order to help unravel the mysteries of the past – by delving deep into the valuable sedimentary records of our oceans. This book presents a compilation of some of their most important findings to motivate and encourage young minds for their enhanced role in the cutting edge science of ocean drilling.

Notizen: A spherical field meter has been developed to measure the atmospheric electric field vector above the ground surface. Its calibrations in the radial and linear electric fields and the method to find out the distortion coefficients are described. Extensive measurements of the components of the atmospheric electric field and the resulting electric field vector in fair weather and during the passage of a small dust devil over the spherical field meter are reported. Observations made at Pune (18°32′ N, 73°51′ E, 559 m above msl), show that in fair weather the horizontal component of the electric field may be upto 5% of the vertical component. Variations in the horizontal components of the electric field when averaged over an interval of more than 4 s are small and are generally but not always identical to its vertical components. However, at a frequency of few Hertz, variations in the horizontal components may be comparatively larger and generally independent of the vertical components. Observations made during the passage of a small dust devil over the spherical field meter show the development of appreciable horizontal component of electric field above the ground surface. These observations demonstrate the capability and reliability of the spherical field meter to measure the magnitude and direction of the electric field vector. They also demonstrate that the movement of small space charge pockets close to the surface may cause the development of horizontal component of the electric field. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The ability of scanning electron acoustic microscopy (SEAM) to characterize ceramic materials is assessed. SEAM images of Vickers indentations in SiC whisker-reinforced alumina clearly reveal not only the radial cracks, the length of which can be used to estimate the fracture toughness of the material, but also reveal strong contrast, interpreted as arising from the combined effects of lateral cracks and the residual stress field left in the SiC whisker-reinforced alumina by the indenter. The strong contrast is removed after the material is heat treated at 1000 °C to relieve the residual stresses around the indentations. A comparison of these observations with SEAM and reflected polarized light observations of Vickers indentations in soda-lime glass both before and after heat treatment confirms our interpretation of the strong contrast.

Notizen: In this work, the structural integrity of the critical components of the fast breeder reactor (FBR) that are subjected thermal striping is assessed using a fracture mechanics approach based on linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). The structural integrity is assessed in terms of the actual life of the component for a particular difference between the hot and cold liquid temperatures at the critical mixing velocities. A generalized procedure is attempted for the computation of fatigue life. It is demonstrated in this work that the analysis procedure adopted is computationally very efficient. Green's function method is used for transient mode I crack propagation analysis. An inherent parallelism in the method is exploited for computational efficiency. A distributed computing environment is, therefore, used to demonstrate the effectiveness of Green's function method for crack propagation analysis for the kind of problem solved in this work. A simple idealization in the form of flat plate geometry is used in a numerical example to show the computational efficiency. The method shows a good scale-up justifying the benefit of using a distributed computing environment given a large amount of input data for the thermal striping problem.

Notizen: The main sources of error in the determination of stress intensity factors (SIFs) for an interface crack in a bi-material by conventional photoelasticity are the measurement of the positional co-ordinates of the data point and the fringe order. In the present work, use of two digital photoelasticity methods for collecting these data is discussed. SIFs are evaluated using constant radius method and a least squares approach based on the singular stress field equation. The need for developing a multi-parameter stress field solution for evaluating SIF is highlighted

Notizen: Abstract Experimental and numerical investigations of the three-dimensional flowfields in an isothermal model of an afterburner are presented. Five-hole pilot probe measurements along the entire length of the model in three different azimuthal planes, allow the determination of three mean velocity components which provide comprehensive information to aid understanding of such complex flows. The numerical calculations are performed using a SIMPLE based algorithm with staggered grid arrangement. The standardk-ɛ model is used for physical modeling. The numerical results agree quite satisfactorily with the time-mean velocity measurements. The predicted turbulence kinetic energy contours have also been presented.

Beschreibung: In this paper, we established some sufficient conditions for controllability of impulsive mixed type functional integro-differential equations with finite delay in a Banach space. The results are achieved by using the M\"onch fixed point theorem via measures of noncompactness and semigroup theory. Particularly, we do not assume the compactness of the evolution system. An example is given to illustrate the effective of our results.

Beschreibung: Time series measurements of temperature, salinity and surface meteorological parameters recorded at 8°N, 90°E in the southern central Bay of Bengal (BoB) from a Research Moored Array for African-Asian-Australian Monsoon Analysis and predication (RAMA) buoy are used to document temperature inversions and their influence on the mixed layer heat budget during the winters, defined as October to March, of 2006-07 (W67) and 2007-08 (W78). There is a marked difference in the frequency and amplitude of temperature inversion between these two winters, with variations much stronger in W78 compared to W67. The formation of temperature inversions is favored by the existence of thick barrier layers, which are also more prominent in W78 compared to W67. Inversions occur when heating in the barrier layer below the mixed layer by penetrative shortwave radiation is greater than heating of the mixed layer by net surface heat flux and horizontal advection. Our analysis further demonstrates that intraseasonal and year-to-year variability in the frequency and magnitude of temperature inversions during winter have substantial influence on mixed layer temperature through the modulation of vertical heat flux at the base of mixed layer.

Beschreibung: With trending competition in decision-making process, linguistic decision-making is gaining attractive attention. Previous studies on linguistic decision-making have neglected the occurring probability (relative importance) of each linguistic term which causes unreasonable ranking of objects. Further, decision-makers’ (DMs) often face difficulties in providing apt preference information for evaluation. Motivated by these challenges, in this paper, we set our proposal on probabilistic linguistic preference relation (PLPR)-based decision framework. The framework consists of two phases viz., (a) missing value entry phase and (b) ranking phase. In phase (a), the missing values of PLPR are filled using a newly proposed automatic procedure and consistency of PLPR is ensured using a consistency check and repair mechanism. Following this, in phase (b), objects are ranked using newly proposed analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method under PLPR context. The practicality of the proposal is validated by using two numerical examples viz., green supplier selection problem for healthcare and the automobile industry. Finally, the strength and weakness of the proposal are discussed by comparing with similar methods.
