Notizen: Abstract Two field experiments were conducted to study the effect of prilled urea, neem cake coated urea, dicyandiamide treated urea and urea supergranules applied to a perennial aromatic herb, geranium (Pelargonium graveolens L. Her'.) grown on a sandy loam soil. Application of nitrogen increased the biomass and essential oil yields. Neem cake coated urea significantly increased the yields over prilled urea. There was no residual effect of N levels and N carriers. The concentration and quality of essential oil were not influenced either by levels or carriers of N.

Notizen: Summary Grain yields, moisture extraction pattern, water use efficiency and NPK uptake were studied with three spring wheat cultivars grown in pure and mixed stands under three irrigation levels. The three spring wheat cultivars produced similar grain yields. None of the mixed stands yielded more than pure stands. Soil moisture extraction pattern of the three cultivars and their binary mixed stands was similar from the top layers, however, more moisture was extracted from deeper layers by the tall cultivar C 306 and mixed stands having C 306 as a component cultivar. The water use efficiency of the dwarf cultivar HD 2160 was higher than the other two cultivars. Two mixed stands, namely, 3 : 1 and 1 : 1 Kalyansona: C 306 had a higher water use efficiency than their pure stands but all other mixed stands were intermediate. The grain yield and NP uptake of the dwarf cultivar HD 2160 were less when it was grown in mixed stands, while that of semi-dwarf cultivar Kalyansona and tall cultivar C 306 were more when grown with cultivar HD 2160 than when grown alone or together. The K uptake of all the three cultivars was adversely affected when they were grown in mixed stands. Two or three irrigations increased the moisture extraction from top layers but decreased the water use efficiency as compared to one irrigation. Grain yield and NPK uptake of the cultivars and their binary mixed stands were more with two or three irrigations than with one irrigation.

Notizen: Summary Grain yield and yield components were studied in the three spring wheat genotypes HD 2160 (dwarf), Kalyansona (semi-dwarf) and C 306 (tall) in pure stands as well as in their binary mixed stands during two years. The grain yields of the three genotypes in pure stands ranked as follows: HD 2160 〉 Kalyansona 〉 C 306. Four mixed stands, 3:1 HD:K, 1:1 HD:C in the first year and 1:1 K:C, 1:3 K:C in the second year out-yielded the pure stand of the better component genotype by 4.4, 2.7, 3.3 and 0.8 percent, respectively. Out of the nine mixed stands four in the first year and seven in the second year out-yielded the midmonoculture yields and the increases ranged from 1 to 7.6 percent. Mixed stands were more stable than pure stands. The yield and yield components of the dwarf genotype HD 2160 scored less and those of the taller genotype C 306 scored higher in mixed stands. The semi-dwarf genotype Kalyansona yielded more with HD 2160 and less with C 306. Plant height but not high yielding ability conferred high competitive ability. With respect to competitive ability the three genotypes ranked as follows: C 306 〉 Kalyansona 〉 HD 2160. The results illustrate the importance of intergenotypic competition in increasing crop production and reducing genotype-environment interactions. Such studies are important to agronomists as genotypes with high competitive ability can be useful to combat the weed problem. They are also important to plant breeders for predicting the fate of genotypes with low competitive ability in heterogeneous populations.

Notizen: Abstract Protein content and protein yield of three spring wheat cultivars differing in morphological and physiological growth characters were found to be influenced by intercultivar competition, irrigation levels and nitrogen fertilization. The protein content of the tall cultivar C 306 and the protein yield of the dwarf cultivar HD 2160 were more than the other cultivars. Binary mixed stands were not superior to the better component cultivar. Intercultivar competition increased the protein content of dwarf and semi-dwarf cultivars, but decreased the protein content of tall cultivar. On the other hand, protein yield of the dwarf cultivar decreased and that of tall cultivar increased when grown in mixed stands. Protein yield of semi-dwarf cultivar increased when grown with dwarf cultivar, but decreased when grown with tall cultivar. Two or three irrigations increased the protein content and protein yield of all the three cultivars and their mixed stands over one irrigation. Protein content and protein yield of the cultivars and their mixed stands were higher when 150 kg N/ha was applied than when 80 kg N/ha was applied.
