    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Natural stone is considered to be a versatile, durable and aesthetically pleasing building material. From the beginning of civilization, important structures and monuments have been built from, or based on, natural stone. Until the end of the nineteenth century, the use of local stone resources was mostly in balance with the local environment. Strict environmental legislation has resulted in the closing of many long-standing quarries in industrialized countries, which has led to a shortage of traditional stone varieties. This has caused problems for restoration practice. Cheap, imported stone from less industrialized countries has become more widely available in recent years.Some of the issues related to built stone conservation and restoration covered by this volume are: the establishment of inventories of possible replacement stones; understanding the decay mechanism and use of preventive conservation methods for slowing down decay processes; evaluation of the properties of natural stone; and assessing the risks of using replacement stones of different qualities.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Stone buildings and monuments from the cultural centres of many of the world's urban areas. Frequently these areas are prone to high levels of atmospheric pollution that promote a variety of aggressive stone decay processes. Because of this, stone decay is now widely recognized as a severe threat to much of our cultural heritage. If this threat is to be successfully addressed it is essential that the symptoms of decay are clearly identified, that appropriate stone properties are accurately characterized and that decay processes are precisely identified. It is undoubtedly the case that successful conservation has to be underpinned by a comprehensive understanding of the causes of decay and the factors that control them. The accomplishment of these demanding goals requires an interdisciplinary approach based on co-operation between geologists, environmental scientists, chemists, material scientists, civil engineers, restorers and architects. In pursuit of this collaboration, this volume aims to strengthen the knowledge base dealing with the causes, consequences, prevention and solution of stone decay problems.

    Notizen: Laboratory tests of physical and mechanical properties were performed on amphibolites representing two units from the Kola Superdeep Borehole KSDB-3 (Russia) − the Proterozoic Karelian Complex (depths of 3043 m, 3530 m and 4389 m) and the Archean Kola–Belomorian Complex (depths of 7951 m, 8942 m and 9904 m). Obtained grain density and bulk density values are nearly identical for all tested samples, but porosities increased slowly with depth. Marked differences in strength properties were found between amphibolite samples from the Karelian Complex and amphibolite samples from the Kola–Belomorian Complex. The uniaxial compressive strength of the samples from the lower part of the borehole is significantly smaller than in samples from the upper part; a similar trend was found for triaxial tests. The values of the deformation modulus, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio obtained from samples of the Karelian Complex are considerably higher than those from the Kola–Belomorian Complex. Observed mechanical properties are explained by the variable grain-size distribution and by the spatial arrangement of main rock-forming minerals. These properties are also influenced by recovery of rocks from great depths.

    Beschreibung: The structure of the electronic database of natural stones used in the Czech Republic (named Deka) has been completed. The system is based on MySQL, and is comprised of the following crucial items: general data, data regarding the geographic location and status of the quarry; petrographic description, associated mineralogical data and chemical analyses; technical data covering physical and mechanical properties as well as sculptural workability; parameters about the deposit (quarry); and data describing historical exploitation and utilization. Along with the structure of the database, other practical problems such as access to the database, insertions, corrections, erasing a record or reference, etc. are discussed. The database is designed for geologists, historians and restorers resolving problems of a stone's provenance from monuments, architects involved in the selection of promising stone types for new projects and for educational purposes to geologists, restorers, etc. Appendix 1: A description of the eight types of data used in the dimension store database is provided at http://www.geolsoc.org.uk/sup18394

    Beschreibung: This paper represents the introduction to the volume focused on the various aspects of natural stone research. From the topic issues studied recently, four major aspects are covered: (1) availability of certain stone types for monuments, (2) strategies aiming to strengthen our knowledge of past resources through the establishment of natural stone databases and inventories, (3) evaluation of natural stone properties and assessment of the compatibility of repair stones, and (4) decay studies of natural stone on monuments and on natural exposures. This paper also aims to highlight the importance of the use of local stone resources, a practice that has seriously declined during the 20th century in most of the industrialized countries. The availability of natural stone from monuments is also discussed in terms of sandstones and travertine in the Czech Republic and Hungary as a typical example.

    Beschreibung: This study reports the Raman data for reduced carbonaceous matter (CM) in crystalline marbles, related to a determination of their provenance. Raman microspectrometry was tested on graphitic' marbles formed under different metamorphic conditions (regional v. contact) with various geological ages, and with distinct types of CM from the Bohemian Massif (Czech Republic). First, various modes of occurrence of CM were examined by optical microscopy (OM). The Raman results exhibited spectral variations of CM with different metamorphic grades and types. Several marble groups could be distinguished: (1) well-ordered CM/graphite of higher grade regional metamorphosed marbles; less graphitized metamorphosed organic matter ( disordered' CM); (2) low-grade regional metamorphosed rocks, and (3) contact metamorphosed marbles.

    Beschreibung: Bryozoan and Lithothamnion limestones (BLL) from central-southern Italy, commercially known as Perlato Royal Coreno, were used for a long time in the monumental architecture of the Campania and Lazio regions.In this paper, new mineralogical-petrographical and engineering-geological data about BLL are reported and the relations between the lithofacial and technical features of this stone are investigated.A field survey of the main limestone outcrops allowed a lithostrati-graphic reconstruction of this formation to be drawn and the eight main lithotypes presently used as dimension stones to be recognized.Mineralogical and petrographical characterization was performed by means of X-ray powder diffraction and optical microscopy observation of thin sections (under transmitted, UV-reflected light and cold cathodoluminescence). Petrophysical characterization enabled to compare some engineering-geological properties and to evaluate the influences of rock fabric, chemical composition, fractures and stylolithes on the technical features of the stone. Ageing tests were also performed.Finally the main weathering phenomena affecting the stone were recognised through a detailed study on the facades of the bell tower of the Santa Chiara monastery in Naples.
