Notizen: [Auszug] The results of more than thirty years of grass X breeding, together with the insight that has been gained into the physiology of flowering, now make it feasible to examine the possibility of producing 'non-flowering' strains of herbage grasses. These strains would remain permanently vegetative ...

Notizen: Structures of mixed crystals of the isomorphous salts NaClO3 and NaBrO〈inf/〉3 (sodium chlorate and sodium bromate, respectively) were reinvestigated by X-ray diffraction. Contrary to previous reports, NaClxBr1−xO3 is not cubic. Data from adjacent {100} growth sectors of crystals of varying composition were refined in the triclinic space group P1; halate ions occupy nominally symmetry-related sites nonstatistically. Optical measurements showed that six asymmetric sectors in cubes are disposed to give an object with approximate tetrahedral point symmetry. We address forgotten anomalies, first observed almost 150 years ago, which could have been a sufficient basis for earlier structural reinvestigations. The mixed-crystal structure speaks to the general non-applicability of the Law of Isomorphism to solid solutions. A link between optical anisotropy and nonstatistical guest site occupancy was achieved by annealing crystals between 523 and 533 K. Na2S2O3 and Na2S2O6 were used as habit-modifying impurities to produce NaClxBrl−xO3 crystals with {111} and {\overline 1\overline 1\overline 1} habits, respectively. Diffraction data from {111} and {\overline 1\overline 1\overline 1} growth sectors were refined in the trigonal space group R3. In each case the pyramidal halate ion that was located on the special position was depleted in BrO3−. Conoscopic optical investigations nevertheless showed that the crystals are biaxial with a small 2V (10–15°), in marked contrast to the 90° angle in {100} crystals. We failed to reconcile the optical and X-ray structures by calculating the optical indicatrix with bond polarizability sum models. This led us to estimate the magnitude of other factors which contribute to the optical properties, including strain associated with dislocations which may exert its influence through combined piezoelectric and linear electro-optic effects.

Notizen: Abstract A system that uses ultrasonic techniques to monitor the reaction bonding of silicon nitride is described. Reaction bonding of silicon nitride takes place in a nitrogen atmosphere at temperatures up to 1400°C. As with many sensors used in hostile environments, it is difficult to design the ultrasonic sensor in a way that provides optimal clarity of the signal. The sensing system must be designed within the physical limitations on access to the furnace. Ultrasonic probes that accommodate limited access to the silicon nitride sample have been designed and ultrasonic signals acquired during processing, albeit with significant noise and complexity in the signal. Signal processing techniques are used which make it possible to measure changes in phase velocity and attenuation during reaction bonding. Because of variability in the measured velocity and attenuation, the method of signal processing presented is applicable to those cases where it is not possible to redesign the probe for optimal clarity of the ultrasonic signal. This technique demonstrates the potential to perform measurements using signals that would have been considered intractable in the past. Data obtained from ultrasonic monitoring are suitable for use as input to a manufacturing process control feedback loop.

Notizen: Summary A method has been developed that allows one to drive a molecule to conformations of lowest energy given the starting conformation, the identity of the rotatable bonds and the step size. This method has proved useful in our hands in the drug design arena where it is frequently more important to get ‘low-energy’ conformers of a molecule that match some other (e.g. pharmacophoric or enzyme pocket) requirements than to exhaustively enumerate all possible low-energy conformations for each of the molecules to be studied. The method has been shown to work in the test cases studied to date. Furthermore, so far it has been shown to be sufficiently fast to be used for molecules containing up to 70 rotatable bonds.

Notizen: Abstract Axisymmetric waves in thick, solid, cylindrical waveguides are used in a number of engineering applications. Most important, these waves are employed to determine the modulus of materials at high temperatures. The description of the experiment typically uses plane waves to explain the results. Since a plane wave model of the experiment neglects dispersion, the accuracy of the measurement may be limited. In addition, care must be taken to use particular waveguide diameter to wavelength ratios to limit the error. An application of the Pochhammer-Chree solution to predict multimode wave propagation in a cylinder is described. This simple solution can be used to predict the time delay from experimental results while explicitly including the effects of dispersion. Application of this method to interpret experimental results may improve measurement accuracy. Use of this method with suitable signal processing will also make it possible to employ waveguides for which the diameter to wavelength ratio is constrained.

Notizen: Abstract Northeastern Atlantic sedimentary rare earth element (REE) (La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb and Lu) phase associations among CaCO3, authigenic and lithogenic material are estimated from total sediment REE, Al, Ca, Si, Mn and Co abundances using a linear correlation technique. Phase associations were also determined using a selective chemical leaching technique specific for CaCO3+exchangeable cation, easily reducible oxyhydroxide and residual material. Results suggest that 25–50% of the REE associated with the clay material are exchangeable cations and 20–35% of the total 3+REE and 4% of the total Ce reside in coatings on the CaCO3 tests.
