Notizen: Abstract: General Systems Theory appears to have been uncritically accepted as the leading paradigm within administrative theory. This paper examines systems formulations and concludes that they overemphasize growth and show little appreciation for intra-organizational conflict, diversity of values, and political processes within organizations. Neglect of these factors pose limitations for realistic system design, integration, and adaptation. However, the limitations of G.S.T. formulations within administrative theory seem to be more due to the users of G.S.T. than to weaknesses inherent in G.S.T.

Notizen: Photodissociation of chlorine adsorbed on a LiF(001) surface at 25–70 K has been investigated by means of angularly resolved resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy (REMPI). The translational-energy distributions and angular distributions for forming Cl(g) photofragments were determined. Photolysis was performed employing 351 nm radiation, with laser pulse energies of 0.3–1.2 mJ/cm2. A peak in the translational energy of Cl(g) at about 0.4 eV was identified as being due to the direct photodissociation of the Cl2(ad) molecule by 3.5 eV photons. Particular interest attached to the observation of a further channel (termed "A") for photodissociation leading to Cl(g) with translational energy peaking at ∼1 eV and extending to 1.5 eV. The available photon energy renders it highly unlikely that this "high-energy" Cl(g) originates in Cl2(ad). Channel A had the same linear dependence of Cl-atom flux on laser pulse-energy as did the lower energy (0.4 eV) channel, termed "B," but differed from it in exhibiting a slow approach to steady state. It appears that channel A requires the prior build-up of Cl(ad) concentration due to the photodissociation of Cl2. It is proposed that this leads to the formation of a steady-state concentration of Cl2(centered ellipsis)Cl which when photolyzed yields high-energy Cl(g) via channel A. Channel A exhibits a distinctive angular distribution at low coverage and a characteristic Cl*/Cl ratio, as compared with channel B. The suggested mechanism for channel A is Cl2(centered ellipsis)Cl+hν→Cl3*→Cl2•Cl→Cl2+Cl (where* is an electronically excited state and • represents repulsion in the lower electronic state to which Cl3* reverts). This mechanism is interpreted in terms of an extensive diatomics-in-molecules (DIM) model for the trichlorine radical, shown to be in agreement with high level ab initio multireference internally contracted configuration interaction (MRCI) calculations, and consistent with the observations. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In a closed population of smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieui during a 9-year period in Nebish Lake, Wisconsin, total egg production in spring, the percentage of constructed nests that receive eggs, and the mean number of eggs/nest were inversely related to spawning stock biomass. Yet, there was no relationship between total egg production or spawning stock biomass and total young-of-the-year production in autumn of the same year. Together, these results suggest that density-dependent processes regulate egg production, but not young-of-the year production, in smallmouth bass.

Notizen: Six scarecrow toadfish Opsanus phobetron were found in the stomachs of five juvenile lemon sharks Negaprion brevirostris, and subsequent sampling yielded 29 O. phobetron specimens from mangroves (45% of toadfish), conch shells (28%), and seagrass beds (25%) around Bimini, Bahamas during the winter. The presence of large numbers of scarecrow toadfish including mature females, when the water temperature was 〉22° C, suggests that this is a successful breeding tropical population and not a glacial relict.

Notizen: Early onset Familial Alzheimer's Disease (FAD) is an autosomal dominant disease with apparent complete penetrance. It is genetically heterogeneous with some families carrying mutations in the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene which segregate with the disease. In addition, there is allelic heterogeneity with four mutations associated with FAD. Three mutations have been reported at APP 717, just distal to the C-terminus of the β-amyloid domain, APP 717 val-ile, APP 717 val-phe, and APP 717 val-gly, which are associated with autopsy-proven Alzheimer's disease (AD). APP 670/671 lies at the N terminus of the β-amyloid domain and is associated with clinically diagnosed FAD in two Swedish families. FAD tends to have prominent myoclonus and this is shared by the cases with APP mutations. In two unrelated UK families with APP 717 val-ile mutations there was early prominent memory impairment with dyscalculia proceeding to generalized cognitive impairment with a lack of insight. There was a late development of a gait disturbance with extrapyramidal features in some members. Positron emission tomography (PET) with fluorodeoxyglucose demonstrated posterior bitemporal biparietal hypometabolism in one case. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed generalized cerebral atrophy particularly affecting the temporal lobes and hippocampus. At autopsy, a single case showed extensive β-amyloid deposition with congophilic angiopathy and widespread senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. The cytoskeletal pathology associated with abnormally phosphorylated tau was similar to cases of sporadic AD. In addition, there were widespread cortical and subcortical Lewy bodies. A single family with the APP 717 val-gly mutation also showed prominent myoclonus, lack of insight, and seizures, PET, in a single case, showed classical biparietal bitemporal hypometabolism. Autopsy, in a single case, showed diffuse deposits of β-amyloid throughout the cortex with frequent neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. No other inclusion bodies were seen. There was severe congophilic angiopathy. The age at onset of APP mutations is around 50 years of age by contrast to other early onset FAD pedigrees.

Notizen: Pearl perch, Glaucosoma buergeri Richardson 1845, from deeper waters (〉 100 m depth) on the continental shelf of north-western Australia were aged by examining transverse sections of their sagittal otoliths. Ages were assigned based on counts of alternating opaque and translucent zones (annuli). Otolith length and breadth (width) increased linearly with fish length, whereas otolith weight increased linearly with fish age. The continuous growth of the otoliths provides some evidence that the opaque and translucent zones used to estimate age in this study are formed on a regular basis. Parameters of the length–weight relationship were estimated, along with parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function. The generalised von Bertalanffy growth function (total length-at-age, both sexes combined) for G. buergeri was Lt=512.7 (1 – e–0.139(t + 0.89)). There was no significant differential growth between the sexes in observed length-at-age. The oldest individual found was a male G. buergeri estimated to be 26 years of age. The annual instantaneous rate of natural mortality (M) was estimated to be 0.14. The slow growth, long life and low natural mortality rate indicate that G. buergeri is vulnerable to overfishing and that harvest strategies for this species should be conservative, given its low production potential.

Notizen: [Auszug] The 230Th-238U disequilibrium system is a useful tool for studying sources and processes involved in recent volcanism because it can provide a direct measure of an important geochemical characteristic of the source, the Th/U ratio7,10. Unlike other isotopic tracers such as 87Sr/86Sr, 143Nd/144Nd, ...
