Beschreibung: Ecologists have long sought to understand the factors controlling the structure of savanna vegetation. Using data from 2154 sites in savannas across Africa, Australia, and South America, we found that increasing moisture availability drives increases in fire and tree basal area, whereas fire reduces tree basal area. However, among continents, the magnitude of these effects varied substantially, so that a single model cannot adequately represent savanna woody biomass across these regions. Historical and environmental differences drive the regional variation in the functional relationships between woody vegetation, fire, and climate. These same differences will determine the regional responses of vegetation to future climates, with implications for global carbon stocks.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Lehmann, Caroline E R -- Anderson, T Michael -- Sankaran, Mahesh -- Higgins, Steven I -- Archibald, Sally -- Hoffmann, William A -- Hanan, Niall P -- Williams, Richard J -- Fensham, Roderick J -- Felfili, Jeanine -- Hutley, Lindsay B -- Ratnam, Jayashree -- San Jose, Jose -- Montes, Ruben -- Franklin, Don -- Russell-Smith, Jeremy -- Ryan, Casey M -- Durigan, Giselda -- Hiernaux, Pierre -- Haidar, Ricardo -- Bowman, David M J S -- Bond, William J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2014 Jan 31;343(6170):548-52. doi: 10.1126/science.1247355.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Biological Sciences, Macquarie University, New South Wales 2109, Australia.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24482480" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Beschreibung: An experimental study of operating bed pressure drop was performed in thermal treatment of coarse waste particles of different size, density, and sphericity in conical spouted beds by introducing a nonporous draft tube. The influence of introducing a nonporous draft tube as well as of operating conditions on bed pressure drop was determined. Bed pressure drop in conical spouted beds with a nonporous draft tube was found to be lower than that without any device, which allows for saving operating costs. The most important factor influencing the bed pressure drop was the stagnant bed height. The bed pressure drop was reduced when stagnant bed height, particle density, particle sphericity or inlet gas temperature were decreased. Likewise, the bigger the particle diameter, the lower was the bed pressure drop. Conical spouted beds are used in applications handling coarse solids considered non-fluidizable because of the vigorous cyclic movement of the particles. Here, the hydrodynamics of conical spouted beds consisting of coarse waste particles was improved by insertion of a nonporous draft tube in the bed enhancing its stability and reducing the required pumping energy.

Notizen: Abstract Multivariate structural data describing Trachypogon savanna relationships were used to characterize the sources of variation among savannas as a function of the environmental characteristics of the Orinoco Llanos. Twenty-six savannas including major physiognomic types of the Orinoco Llanos ranging from herbaceous to bush island savannas were ordinated on a regional scale. Results of Detrented Canonical Correspondence Analysis (DCCA) using floristics variables indicated that savannas were ordinated along two complex gradients. A soil physical and chemical gradient as expressed by changes in bulk density and magnesium concentration were evident after the analysis of the first DCCA axis. The second axis was a climatic gradient of decreasing annual precipitation and incresing monthly precipitation during the dry season. The impact of human disturbance on the savanna composition was also an explanatory variable of the second DCCA axis. Savanna sites overlapped considerably in composition and most species were widely distributed, with aboveground phytomass abundance depending upon the site.

Notizen: Abstract CO2 exchange between the atmosphere and soil algal crusts of the Trachypogon savannas of the Orinoco Llanos has been analyzed using an open gas exchange system. These savannas encompass a wide range of physiognomic types, from herbaceous communities to savanna woodlands. A maximum CO2 flux of 0.207 mg m-2 s-1 was measured in the crusts of the Guanipa savannas, while in the other examined crusts (0.035–0.105 mg m-2 s-1) the flux was similar to values reported for terrestrial algae. The CO2 flux data were statistically fitted to the photosynthetically active radiation by a logarithmic relationship, and the photosynthetic efficiencies of the crusts were compared. The activation energy calculated for the CO2 fixation indicates that limitations by diffusion and photochemical processes were excluded in the Guanipa crusts (above 12 kcal mole-1), whereas they were evident in the other crust studied. An optimum CO2 incorporation as a function of the crust water potential was established and carbon gain strategies were proposed on the basis of the results and characteristics of the habitats.

Beschreibung: Author(s): M.-T. Deng, S. Vaitiekėnas, E. Prada, P. San-Jose, J. Nygård, P. Krogstrup, R. Aguado, and C. M. Marcus The nonlocal character of Majorana zero modes is a key feature for topological protection of Majorana qubits, and distinguishes separated Majorana bound states from localized Andreev modes. Applying recent theoretical results on the coupling of quantum dots at the wire ends to the zero-energy mode in the wire, the authors provide a first quantitative measure of the nonlocality of Majorana modes in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid nanowires. The spin character of the Majorana mode is revealed by analyzing its coupling to two consecutive quantum dot resonances. Cases of zero modes with moderate and high degrees of nonlocality are compared. [Phys. Rev. B 98, 085125] Published Mon Aug 13, 2018
