    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: This chapter is the ninth to be released in U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1386, Satellite Image Atlas of Glaciers of the World, a series of 11 chapters. In each of the geographic area chapters, remotely sensed images, primarily from the Landsat 1, 2, and 3 series of spacecraft, are used to analyze the specific glacierized region of our planet under consideration and to monitor glacier changes. Landsat images, acquired primarily during the middle to late 1970s and early 1980s, were used by an international team of glaciologists and other scientists to study various geographic regions and (or) to discuss related glaciological topics. In each glacierized geographic region, the present areal distribution of glaciers is compared, wherever possible, with historical information about their past extent. The atlas provides an accurate regional inventory of the areal extent of glacier ice on our planet during the 1970s as part of a growing international scientific effort to measure global environmental change on the Earth's surface.The chapter is divided into seven geographic parts and one topical part: Glaciers of the Former Soviet Union (F-1), Glaciers of China (F-2), Glaciers of Afghanistan (F-3), Glaciers of Pakistan (F-4), Glaciers of India (F-5), Glaciers of Nepal (F-6), Glaciers of Bhutan (F-7), and the Paleoenvironmental Record Preserved in Middle-Latitude, High-Mountain Glaciers (F-8). Each geographic section describes the glacier extent during the 1970s and 1980s, the benchmark time period (1972-1981) of this volume, but has been updated to include more recent information.

    Beschreibung: Landsats 4 & 5 have acquired approximately one thousand images of Antarctica in 1984 and 1985, including a few thematic mapper images. I will show, on two maps, where these images have been acquired and give a preliminary evaluation of their quality.

    Beschreibung: Fifteen 1: 250000 and one 1: 1000 000 scale Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) image mosaic maps are currently being produced of the West Antarctic ice streams on the Shirase and Siple Coasts. Landsat TM images were acquired between 1984 and 1990 in an area bounded approximately by 78°-82.5°S and 120°- 160° W. Landsat TM bands 2, 3 and 4 were combined to produce a single band, thereby maximizing data content and improving the signal-to-noise ratio. The summed single band was processed with a combination of high- and low-pass filters to remove longitudinal striping and normalize solar elevation-angle effects. The images were mosaicked and transformed to a Lambert conformal conic projection using a cubic-convolution algorithm. The projection transformation was controled with ten weighted geodetic ground-control points and internal image-to-image pass points with annotation of major glaciological features. The image maps are being published in two formats: conventional printed map sheets and on a CD-ROM.

    Beschreibung: Satellite images from 1972 to 1997 have been used to prepare a map showing glaciological features of the Saunders Coast area, Antarctica. Analysis of the imagery shows a trend toward ice-front retreat that may be a result of changing environmental conditions.

    Beschreibung: The preparation of a US Geological Survey Professional Paper, “Satellite image atlas of glaciers”, has produced a 1:5 000 000 scale “Landsat index map of Antarctica”, in which each of the 2 470 Landsat nominal scene centers is represented by a symbol showing the suitability of available Landsat images for the preparation of planimetric image maps and for glaciological studies. Landsat has the potential for imaging about 79% of the area of Antarctica, and 70% of the Landsat imaging area, or about 55% of the continent, was found to have excellent or good (less than 10% cloud cover) coverage.Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America have published Landsat image maps, either as single Landsat scenes or as mosaics of two or more images. The Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of South Africa also plan to publish Landsat image maps in the near future.Available Landsat images could be used, in combination with Doppler satellite technology for geodetic control, to triple the area of Antarctica presently mapped at scales of 1:250 000 or larger. Landsat-3 RBV images can also be used to prepare 1:100 000 scale image maps.In addition to eventually using Landsat images to compile an accurate coastline of Antarctica, Landsat images have been successfully used for glaciological studies. Recent measurements of successive images of Pine Island Glacier, Walgreen Coast, West Antarctica, showed an average speed of flow of the terminus of 6 m d−1 over 750 d.

    Beschreibung: Grasshopper Glacier is a cirque glacier in the central Rocky Mountains of the United States. It is a remnant of the “Little Ice Age”, rather than the more widespread and older Pinedale Glaciation. The glacier has not been monitored on a regular basis and very few maps have been published of the area, but it has been studied, photographed, occasionally mapped, and described by scientific and non-scientific groups, at different times since 1898. These photographic, cartographic, and written records make it possible to trace the fluctuations of this glacier since 1898. Grasshopper Glacier has had periods of positive mass balance, but the overall trend has been negative, with accelerated melting in recent years. It is estimated that Grasshopper Glacier has lost about 50% of its area and as much as 90% of its volume, since 1898. Other Rocky Mountain glaciers are experiencing similar wastage and, if current conditions continue, these glaciers will disappear by the middle of the next century.
