Notizen: The strain relaxation process of ZnSe grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(001) has been studied using high resolution x-ray diffraction. One single sample with a tailored thickness gradient has been used, allowing us to continuously follow the strain in a wide range of thicknesses. The relaxation starts around 1300 Å with the coexistence of fully strained and partially relaxed regions of the ZnSe and continues up to 1600 Å. These findings can be explained by the formation of misfit dislocations on the top surface with subsequent migration to the ZnSe/GaAs interface. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The x-ray standing wave method is used to investigate some crystallographic features of the first stages of growth of ultrathin pseudomorphic MnTe(001) strained layers buried in CdTe on CdTe(001) substrates. Experiments with 004 and 113 reflecting planes show evidence of the presence of both MnTe clusters and diluted CdMnTe alloy. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Stroboscopic X-ray topography has been performed to observe the different states of acoustic vibrations in quartz resonators with a time resolution of 1 ns. These experiments have been made at LURE (Orsay, France) using the pulsed light delivered by the DCI storage ring. The studied resonators have shown that the vibration is affected by the nature, the density and the distribution of the defects.

Notizen: Growth imperfections in (Ga1−xAlxAs)n1–(GaAs)n2/ GaAs superlattices, grown on GaAs(001) substrates, have been investigated by X-ray diffraction techniques coupling image and rocking-curve recording. The use of a synchrotron radiation source has enabled topographic images formed with very weak superlattice reflections to be obtained. The intensity distribution across the sample surface observed in such images has revealed two different types of superlattice defects: either overall gradients of both the average composition and period or islands showing different composition and period from the surrounding material. Since these parameters control the optoelectronic properties and particularly the gap value it is of primary importance to grow homogeneous samples and to have a technique able to detect inhomogeneities such as the ones described in the present work.

Notizen: Growth defects and the incommensurate phase have been observed in synthetic berlinite (AlPO4) samples. This study was performed by high-temperature X-ray topography using synchrotron radiation at LURE (Orsay, France). Some results concerning the defects observed above room temperature are presented. The incommensurate phase was investigated by using a narrow beam which allows the observation and analysis of the satellites around Bragg spots.

Notizen: The extended defects of lithium tantalate (LiTaO3) have been studied by reflection and transmission topography using the white radiation delivered by the DCI Synchrotron at LURE (Orsay, France). Some low-angle subgrains were observed in slices cut perpendicularly to the Y, Y − 45° and Z directions. The typical size of the subgrains is a few cm3. Dislocations were imaged in thin plates; their density was found to be in the region of several hundred per cm2. The high intensity of the synchrotron source has permitted an experimental study of the thickness vibration modes in this material, which is highly absorbent for X-rays. The two thickness shear modes existing in X-cut plates were observed using conventional and stroboscopic topography. The fundamental fast shear mode and its anharmonics display strong trapping properties. However, the slow shear mode is not strongly trapped and extends far from the electroded region. In most cases, the fast shear mode and its anharmonics are coupled to plate modes. The time structure of the radiation of the DCI Synchrotron has been used to show that, in most instances, these coupled modes include progressive components with a large standing-wave ratio. The existence of these progressive waves, characterized by a large amplitude, was observed in all the samples examined. They carry a fraction of the acoustic energy toward the mounting structure of the resonators and are the origin of the limited Q factors (a few thousands) observed in conventional X-cut resonators.

Notizen: (0{\bar 1}11) twin boundaries of Y-cut synthetically grown quartz crystals are studied by means of X-ray section topographs. The images show an anomalous contrast and no extinction condition can be found. Simulated images demonstrate that the twin boundaries are not simple planar defects. They may be described as lamellae of a non-diffracting material. Their thickness is of the order of 15 μm and, within these boundaries, the Fourier components of the dielectric susceptibility are drastically reduced by one order of magnitude.

Notizen: The propagation modes of ultra-acoustic waves in quartz planar resonators have been studied by means of stroboscopic section topographs at ESRF. The images present a number of internal lines inside the section that allow a quantitative analysis of the vibration modes. When the excitation level increases, the shape of the lines enables the study of the dumping of the vibration along the surface of the device. Such analysis was made possible because of the small divergence of the white beam delivered by a third-generation synchrotron source.

Notizen: The propagation modes of ultra-acoustic waves in quartz planar resonators with different elliptical electrodes have been studied by means of white-beam X-ray topographs. The contrast is explained on the basis of thickness vibration modes and the validity and limits of this model are verified by means of simulation of the X-ray images. The shape of the fringes is correct but other features are not observed in the simulations. The differences may be explained by the interaction with the wires connecting the electrodes to the frequency generator and a slight angle between the upper and lower surfaces not taken into consideration in the theory.
