Notizen: Summary The governing equations of flexural vibrations of thin, fluid-saturated, poroelastic plates are derived in detail. The plate material obeys the Aifantis-Beskos theory of poroelasticity with two degrees of porosity, while the plate theory employed is the one due to Kirchhoff. The dynamic response of a rectangular, simply supported, poroelastic plate with two degrees of porosity to harmonic load is obtained analytically-numerically and the effects of porosities and permeabilities on the response are studied. A comparison between the single and double porosity material models is also made. The quasi-static problem is analysed as as special case of the dynamic one.

Notizen: Abstract The problem of structural isolation from ground transmitted vibrations by open or infilled trenches under conditions of plane strain is numerically studied. The soil medium is assumed to be linear elastic or viscoelastic, homogeneous and isotropic. Horizontally propagating Rayleigh waves or waves generated by the motion of a rigid foundation or by surface blasting are considered in this work. The formulation and solution of the problem is accomplished by the boundary element method in the frequency domain for harmonic disturbances or in conjunction with Laplace transform for transient disturbances. The proposed method, which requires a discretisation of only the trench perimeter, the soil-foundation interface and some portion of the free soil surface on either side of the trench appears to be better than either finite element or finite difference techniques. Some parametric studies are also conducted to assess the importance of the various geometrical, material and dynamic input parameters and provide useful guidelines to the design engineer.

Notizen: Abstract The dual reciprocity boundary element method (DR/BEM) is employed for the analysis of free and forced vibrations of three-dimensional elastic solids. Use of the elastostatic fundamental solution in the integral formulation of elastodynamics creates an inertial volume integral in addition to the boundary ones. This volume integral is transformed into a surface integral by invoking the reciprocal theorem. A general analytical method is described for the closed form determination of the particular solutions of the displacement and traction tensors corresponding to any radial basis function employed in the transformation process. The simple but effective 1+r radial basis function is used in the applications of this paper. Quadratic continuous and discontinuous 9-noded boundary elements are used in the analysis. Free vibrations are studied by solving the corresponding eigenvalue problem iteratively. Harmonic forced vibration problems are solved directly in the frequency domain. Transient forced vibration problems are solved by integrating the equations of motion stepwise with the aid of various algorithms. Interior collection points are also used for assessing the accuracy of the method. Two numerical examples involving free and forced vibrations of a sphere and a cube are presented in detail.

Notizen: Abstract  The accuracy of the dual reciprocity boundary element method for two-dimensional elastodynamic interior problems is investigated. A general analytical method is described for the closed form determination of the displacement and traction tensor corresponding to radial basis functions and explicit expressions of these tensors are provided for a number of specific basis functions. For all these basis functions the accuracy of the dual reciprocity boundary element method is numerically assessed for three interior plane stress elastodynamic problems. The influence of internal points on the accuracy of the solution is also considered. Useful results concerning the suitability of the various basis functions for solving plane elastodynamic problems are obtained.

Notizen: Abstract A direct boundary element method is developed for the dynamic analysis of thin inelastic flexural plates of arbitrary planform and boundary conditions. It employs the static fundamental solution of the associated elastic problem and involves not only boundary integrals but domain integrals as well. Thus boundary as well as interior elements are employed in the numerical solution. Time integration is accomplished by the explicit algorithm of the central difference predictor method. A viscoplastic constitutive theory with state variables is employed to model the material behaviour. Numerical results are also presented to illustrate quantitatively the proposed method of solution.

Notizen: Abstract The isolation of structures from ground transmitted waves by open and infilled trenches in a three-dimensional context is numerically studied. The soil medium is assumed to be elastic or viscoelastic, homogeneous and isotropic. Waves generated by the harmonic motion of a surface rigid machine foundation are considered in this work. The formulation and solution of the problem is accomplished by the boundary element method in the frequency domain. The infinite space fundamental solution is used requiring discretization of the trench surface, the soil-foundation interface and some portion of the free soil surface. The proposed methodology is first tested for accuracy by solving three characteristic wave propagation problems with known solutions and then applied to several vibration isolation problems involving open and concrete infilled trenches. Three-dimensional graphic displays of the surface displacement pattern around the trenches are also presented.

Notizen: Abstract The problem of isolating structures from surface waves by open or filled trenches under conditions of plane strain is numerically studied. The soil is assumed to be an isotropic, linear elastic or viscoelastic nonhomogeneous (layered) half-space medium. Waves generated by the harmonic motion of a rigid surface machine foundatin are considered. The formulation and solution of the problem are accomplished by the frequency domain boundary element method. The Green's function of Kausel-Peek-Hull for a thin layered half-space is employed and this essentially requires only a discretization of the trench perimeter and the soil-foundation interface. The proposed methodology is used for the solution of a number of vibration isolation problems and the effect of soil inhomogeneity on the wave screening effectiveness of trenches is discussed.

Notizen: Summary In this note the high frequency wave propagation in a nearly saturated poroelastic medium is studied on the basis of the Vardoulakis-Beskos equations of motion. The effects of the degree of saturation, the solid particle compressibility and the pore radius on the wave propagation velocities and attenuations in the high frequency range are determined and compared against those in the low frequency range.
