Description: This edited volume discusses the impact of several major databases containing historical longitudinal population data. The creation and development of these databases have greatly expanded research possibilities in history, demography, sociology, and other disciplines. The present collection includes seven contributions, on eight databases, that had a wide impact on research in various disciplines. Each database had its own unique genesis and readers are informed about how these databases have changed the course of research in historical demography and related disciplines, how settled findings were challenged or confirmed, and how innovative investigations were launched and implemented. The volume serves as an essential resource for scholars in the field of historical life course studies, offering insights into the transformative power of these databases and their potential for future advancements.

Notes: In recent years, resource-based theory has emerged as one of the most promising theoretical frameworks in the field of strategic management. Unfortunately, past articulations of the theory have adopted a static orientation, with the result that organizational learning - a dynamic process - has been excluded from the discussion. Presents a model designed to incorporate organizational learning effects into the resource-based view. Then applies the model to a number of case examples to demonstrate the importance of including organizational learning as a component of resource-based theory. Concludes that organizational learning is itself a strategic capability or resource important to the process of building and maintaining competitive advantage.

Notes: Extends the transactional-transformational model of leadership by deductively developing four theoretical behavioral types of leadership based on a historical analysis of leadership literature. Then, in an exploratory empirical phase, uses two data sets to inductively develop alternative models of leadership types. Finally, with a third data set, tests several theoretically plausible typologies using second-order confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results of the CFA generally support the existence of four leadership types: directive leadership, transactional leadership, transformational leadership, and empowering leadership.

Notes: Abstract Nontrivial difference sets in groups of order a power of 2 are part of the family of difference sets called Menon difference sets (or Hadamard), and they have parameters (22d+2, 22d+1±2 d , 22d ±2 d ). In the abelian case, the group has a difference set if and only if the exponent of the group is less than or equal to 2 d+2. In [14], the authors construct a difference set in a nonabelian group of order 64 and exponent 32. This paper generalizes that result to show that there is a difference set in a nonabelian group of order 22d+2 with exponent 2 d+3. We use representation theory to prove that the group has a difference set, and this shows that representation theory can be used to verify a construction similar to the use of character theory in the abelian case.

Notes: [Auszug] Considerations of size, hydrophobicity, cell localization and lack of cysteine residues suggested that the 16K component of the F0-like proton channel of vacuolar H+-ATPases might be the E5-associated 16K protein. To evaluate this possibility, rabbit antiserum generated against the chicken-liver ...

Notes: Abstract We are interested in information management for decision support applications, especially those that monitor distributed, heterogeneous databases to assess time-critical decisions. Users of such applications can easily be overwhelmed with data that may change rapidly, may conflict, and may be redundant. Developers are faced with a dilemma: either filter out most information and risk excluding critical items, or gather possibly irrelevant or redundant information, and overwhelm the decision maker. This paper describes a solution to this dilemma called decision-centric information monitoring (DCIM). First, we observe that decision support systems should monitor only information that can potentially change some decision. We present an architecture for DCIM that meets the requirements implied by this observation. We describe techniques for identifying the highest value information to monitor and techniques for monitoring that information despite autonomy, distribution, and heterogeneity of data sources. Finally, we present lessons learned from building LOOKOUT, which is to our knowledge the first implementation of a top-to-bottom system performing decision-centric information monitoring.

Notes: Abstract A review of the literature on Corporate Codes of Ethics suggests that whilst there exists an informative body of literature concerning the prevalence of such codes, their design, implementation and promulgation, it is also evident that there is a relative lack of consideration of their impact upon members' everyday organizational behaviour. By drawing upon organizational sociology and psychology this paper constructs a contextualist and interpretive model which seeks to enable an analysis and evaluation of their effects upon individual, group and organizational behaviour.
