    Description: Rapid release of prepublication data has served the field of genomics well. Attendees at a workshop in Toronto recommend extending the practice to other biological data sets.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3073843/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3073843/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Toronto International Data Release Workshop Authors -- Birney, Ewan -- Hudson, Thomas J -- Green, Eric D -- Gunter, Chris -- Eddy, Sean -- Rogers, Jane -- Harris, Jennifer R -- Ehrlich, S Dusko -- Apweiler, Rolf -- Austin, Christopher P -- Berglund, Lisa -- Bobrow, Martin -- Bountra, Chas -- Brookes, Anthony J -- Cambon-Thomsen, Anne -- Carter, Nigel P -- Chisholm, Rex L -- Contreras, Jorge L -- Cooke, Robert M -- Crosby, William L -- Dewar, Ken -- Durbin, Richard -- Dyke, Stephanie O M -- Ecker, Joseph R -- El Emam, Khaled -- Feuk, Lars -- Gabriel, Stacey B -- Gallacher, John -- Gelbart, William M -- Granell, Antoni -- Guarner, Francisco -- Hubbard, Tim -- Jackson, Scott A -- Jennings, Jennifer L -- Joly, Yann -- Jones, Steven M -- Kaye, Jane -- Kennedy, Karen L -- Knoppers, Bartha Maria -- Kyrpides, Nikos C -- Lowrance, William W -- Luo, Jingchu -- MacKay, John J -- Martin-Rivera, Luis -- McCombie, W Richard -- McPherson, John D -- Miller, Linda -- Miller, Webb -- Moerman, Don -- Mooser, Vincent -- Morton, Cynthia C -- Ostell, James M -- Ouellette, B F Francis -- Parkhill, Julian -- Raina, Parminder S -- Rawlings, Christopher -- Scherer, Steven E -- Scherer, Stephen W -- Schofield, Paul N -- Sensen, Christoph W -- Stodden, Victoria C -- Sussman, Michael R -- Tanaka, Toshihiro -- Thornton, Janet -- Tsunoda, Tatsuhiko -- Valle, David -- Vuorio, Eero I -- Walker, Neil M -- Wallace, Susan -- Weinstock, George -- Whitman, William B -- Worley, Kim C -- Wu, Cathy -- Wu, Jiayan -- Yu, Jun -- 062023/Wellcome Trust/United Kingdom -- 077198/Wellcome Trust/United Kingdom -- U54 HG003273/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- U54 HG003273-04/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- U54 HG003273-04S1/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- U54 HG003273-05/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- U54 HG003273-05S1/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- U54 HG003273-05S2/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- U54 HG003273-06/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- U54 HG003273-06S1/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- U54 HG003273-06S2/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- U54 HG003273-07/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- U54 HG003273-08/HG/NHGRI NIH HHS/ -- Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council/United Kingdom -- Wellcome Trust/United Kingdom -- England -- Nature. 2009 Sep 10;461(7261):168-70. doi: 10.1038/461168a.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19741685" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Surfaces of carrot nanofibre coatings were modified by a gliding arc in atmospheric pressure air. The treatment strengthened wetting of deionized water and glycerol, increased an oxygen content, C-O and C=O, and moderately roughened the surfaces. In the perspective of composite materials, these changes to the nanofibres can potentially improve their processability when they are to be impregnated with a polymeric matrix. However, longer exposure to the gliding arc reduced oxidation and roughness of the surface, and thus there exists an optimum condition to achieve good wetting to solvents.

Description: The Muscleblind (MBL) protein family is a deeply conserved family of RNA binding proteins that regulate alternative splicing, alternative polyadenylation, RNA stability and RNA localization. Their inactivation due to sequestration by expanded CUG repeats causes symptoms in the neuromuscular disease myotonic dystrophy. MBL zinc fingers are the most highly conserved portion of these proteins, and directly interact with RNA. We identified putative MBL homologs in Ciona intestinalis and Trichoplax adhaerens , and investigated their ability, as well as that of MBL homologs from human/mouse, fly and worm, to regulate alternative splicing. We found that all homologs can regulate alternative splicing in mouse cells, with some regulating over 100 events. The cis -elements through which each homolog exerts its splicing activities are likely to be highly similar to mammalian Muscleblind-like proteins (MBNLs), as suggested by motif analyses and the ability of expanded CUG repeats to inactivate homolog-mediated splicing. While regulation of specific target exons by MBL/MBNL has not been broadly conserved across these species, genes enriched for MBL/MBNL binding sites in their introns may play roles in cell adhesion, ion transport and axon guidance, among other biological pathways, suggesting a specific, conserved role for these proteins across a broad range of metazoan species.

Notes: Effects of feed ration levels (RLs) and age on sensory characteristics, fillet lipid content (LC) and fatty acid composition (FA) of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), fillet were investigated in a longitudinal feeding experiment. Daily RLs were administered as a percentage of the ration size necessary for expected maximum growth (RL100). Fish on RL50, RL75, RL100 and RL200 were sampled at 1.4, 2.0 and 2.4 years of age. Analyses of LC and FA were carried out on a fillet cross-section. Sensory analyses were performed by an expert panel using ranking and conventional profiling. RL had no effect on the intensity of fresh smell or any sensory characteristic of taste or consistency of fish on RLs over 75%, irrespective of age; fish on RL50, however, scored significantly lower for fresh taste and firmness. Age had no effect on the intensity of total taste, whereas fresh taste increased and rancidity decreased with increasing age irrespective of RL. LC related strongly to RL and age, and increased up to 2.0 years of age. An increase in LC resulted in a higher level of monounsaturated FA and a lower level of polyunsaturated FA. A restriction to RL75 had no negative effects on sensory characteristics, LC or FA of the fillet.
