SUMMARY— Ten species of bacteria which survived low-dose gamma radiation were isolated from fresh Gulf oysters and identified. The effects of radiation on the proteolytic activity of these bacteria were studied. Irradiation at 0.2–0.3 Mrad reduced proteolytic activity of the bacteria considerably. Reduction of proteolysis was significantly correlated with a decrease in bacterial numbers produced by irradiation.
