    Notes: With implications for navigation, safety, entertainment and vehicle maintenance as well as regulation and infrastructure investment in roads, telematics has the potential to transform driving more than any other innovation for decades. In the already well-established Asian telematics industry, revenue tends to come from extra charges at the time of vehicle-sale, with most subsequent services provided free. The US model has evolved differently, with much of the cost of telematics hardware and software subsidized in the initial vehicle sale price and revenue coming from services used. The decision to invest in telematics is therefore riskier in the US. This article first briefly summarizes the potential of telematics. It then analyzes the investment risks, particularly for automakers. It concludes with recommendations on how the US auto industry can minimize risk and make the most of the opportunities.

The relationship between toxicant-induced changes in the feeding behaviour of the cladoceran, Daphnia catawba (Coker), and subsequent effects at population and community levels were experimentally addressed.2. We adapted a method for measuring the thoracic appendage beat rate of individuals (termed the TAR and positively correlated with daphnid feeding rate) after exposure to toxicant at known levels, for use as a behavioural bioassay for low levels of aquatic toxicants. The TAR declined significantly with an increase in both sublethal and lethal levels of the surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS).3. We also measured population level effects (i.e. rates of reproduction, survival, and R0), and found that reductions in these values occurred at the same concentrations as the effects on individual behaviour.4. In most cases, the changes in feeding behaviour occurred more rapidly (≤30h) than changes in population parameters (days to weeks).5. We conclude that toxicant-induced changes in individual feeding behaviour can provide a quicker estimate of effects on individuals and of potential community effects (i.e. effects on their prey populations) than measurements of population parameters. In addition, due to its sensitivity at low levels of toxicants, the behavioural bioassay may be particularly helpful in identifying effects of sublethal levels of aquatic pollutants.

    Notes: Despite discussions of the increasingly global character of information systems (IS), IS research remains highly "Western-centric" both in terms of its subjects of study and the nationalities of the authors. Researchers interested in IS in non-Western settings are thus reliant on a fragmented and not easily accessible literature that presents a potentially distorted picture of IS practice in these regions. This paper explores this situation through an examination of the literature relating to IS in Egypt (both directly, but also as a Middle Eastern, Arab or Islamic country). A macro analysis of these studies indicates that they are predominantly positivistic in epistemology, quantitative in methodology and focused on economic development and national culture. Although many of the studies make comparisons with other countries in the region, the explicit, or sometimes implicit, point of reference is almost invariably with "the West". This is repeated in a detailed analysis of individual studies. Implications of these findings for research on IS in non-Western settings are discussed.

    Notes: The service sector has assumed greater economic importance over the pastdecade. The latest statistics show that the sector accounts for 60 percent of the value added in the European Economic Community (EEC). It isestimated that "doing things wrong" typically accounts for between 30 and40 per cent of a service organization's operating costs. Theelimination of this waste and meeting customer expectations are themajor challenges facing managers in the service sector. This is whyquality improvement is a vital concern for many service organizations.Despite the significance of the service sector and the importance ofquality-related matters to the sector, there is a paucity of researchand publications dealing with service quality. Furthermore, there issignificant misunderstanding of the various aspects of service quality.Examines the salient features of service quality and its determinantsand describes and discusses several service quality models. Each modelrepresents a different approach to quality improvement. The primary aimsare to enhance understanding of "service quality" and to identify modelsthat managers in the service industry can employ to improve quality.

    Notes: Abstract We present a technique for determining the asymmetry parameter and scattering coefficient of turbid media from spatially resolved reflectance measurements. This technique will contribute to the development of medical applications in which it is necessary to predict the distribution and propagation of light in tissue. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, we derived correlations which relate the reduced scattering coefficient and the asymmetry parameter to the relative reflectance curve. Initial estimates of the optical properties are obtained from these correlations. Final values are obtained by adjusting the optical parameters and repeating the Monte Carlo simulations until the simulated reflectance pattern matches the measured reflectance pattern. Preliminary experimental results indicate that this technique can be used to determine the asymmetry parameter to within 10% and the reduced scattering coefficient to within 5%.

    Notes: Abstract The genes for 5-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) and uroporphyrinogen III synthase (UROS), two enzymes in the biosynthetic pathway for tetrapyrroles, were independently isolated from a plasmid-based genomic library of Anacystis nidulans R2 (also called Synechococcus sp. PCC7942), by their ability to complement Escherichia coli strains carrying mutations in the equivalent genes (hemB and hemD respectively). The identity of the genes was confirmed by comparing the appropriate enzyme activities in complemented and mutant strains. Subclones of the original plasmids that were also capable of complementing the mutants were sequenced. The inferred amino acid sequence of the cyanobacterial HemB protein indicates a significant difference in the metal cofactor requirement from the higher-plant enzymes, which was confirmed by overexpression and biochemical analysis. The organisation of the cyanobacterial hemD locus differs markedly from other prokaryotes. Two open reading frames were found immediately upstream of hemD. The product of one shows considerable similarity to published sequences from other organisms for uroporphyrinogen III methylase (UROM), an enzyme involved in the production of sirohaem and cobalamins (including vitamin B-12). The product of the other shows motifs which are similar to those found in proteins responsible for metabolic regulation in yeast and indicates that this family of transcription control proteins, which has previously been reported only from eukaryotes, is also represented in prokaryotes.

    Notes: Conditions for high-cell-density fermentations of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains producing recombinant-DNA-derived proteins were established. Strains producing human immune interferon (IFN-γ) from the constitutive PGK promoter failed to grow to high cell densities and exhibited low plasmid stability. Regulated expression of IFN-γ was obtained in similar strains by employing a hybrid yeast GPD promoter that was subject to carbon source regulation due to the presence of regulatory DNA sequences from the yeast GAL 1,10 intergenic region. IFN-γ expression programmed by this vector was low during growth on glucose and was induced by galactose. Previously defined fermentation conditions employing glucose as a carbon source were applied to this strain, resulting in high ceil densities with higher plasmid stability. Various methods of galactose induction of IFN-γ expression in high-cell-density fermentations were investigated. Optimal conditions resulted in a 2000-fold induction and production of 2 g IFN-γ/L fermentation culture.
