Abstract The design of industrial entities differs appreciably from any other type of design. The time-consuming basic operations of detailed designing have not yielded to automation. The Rebis Company specializes in the development of software for the design of industrial establishments, and primarily in the automation of this process (see third cover page). In September 1977, Rebis released the latest generation of its application — AutoPLANT97. The revolutionary methods and new intellectual potential of AutoPLANT97 have made it possible to reduce the volume of manual work performed by the designer to a minimum. The specialist merely performs an analysis and makes a decision relative to alternate schemes proposed by the software. A conference of regional representatives of the Rebis IWS Company in the United States in August 1999 was devoted to examination of these problems. This paper was prepared on the basis of projections offered by Piter Quinn, head of the Department of Software-Product Development of the Rebis Company.
