Notes: The intensity dependence of the transient photovoltaic response in the nanosecond region and the spectral dependence of the continuous wave (cw) photovoltaic response in Al/α-SnPc/ITO sandwich cell have been reported. The cw photovoltaic action spectrum is similar to the absorption spectrum. The magnitude, polarity, and response time of the transient photovoltage are found to be dependent on the intensity and wavelength of the incident light, which offers a potential application in the area of light-controlled nonlinear optoelectronic detectors. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Growing process and behavior of particles in a helium-diluted silane rf plasma are studied using two kinds of laser light scattering methods. The region where particles began to be observed appears in a sheath edge region near the periphery of the rf electrode, and then tends to extend inward along the rf electrode and also toward the grounded electrode. From this result, it can be concluded that particles are mainly produced around the sheath edge of the rf electrode. In the sheath of the rf electrode and its neighborhood, larger particles tend to reside closer to the rf electrode, which suggests that they are suspended by an electrostatic force due to the time-averaged sheath electric field and some force increasing with particle size. The size and density of particles around the sheath edge of the rf electrode are (approximately-greater-than)60 nm and (approximately-less-than)109 cm−3 under our experimental conditions.

Notes: Third-harmonic generation measurements have been made for the first time on oriented films of halogen-bridged mixed-valence platinum complexes for the pump wavelength region from 0.6 to 1.0 μm. The ||χ(3)(−3ω;ω,ω,ω)|| spectra obtained by the Maker's fringe method show a distinct peak at about 1.8 eV with the peak value of about 4×10−11 esu. From comparison with the electroabsorption data, this peak has been identified with the two-photon resonance peak with the forbidden exciton in the Pt-halogen chains. One-dimensional exciton states in this compound take an important role in the third-order optical nonlinearity, similar to the case in conjugated polymers.

Notes: Tip surfaces of n-type Si field emitter arrays (FEAs) have been anodized to obtain n-type porous layers on the top surfaces of the Si emitters. The gate voltage required for emission could be lowered by tip anodization and the emission current was enhanced by a factor of up to 10. Fowler–Nordheim plots for the FEAs before and after tip anodization revealed that the work function of the tip could be decreased and the field conversion factor could be increased by the process. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We demonstrated the vector mapping of the supercurrent flow in YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films using a terahertz (THz) radiation imaging system. A wire-grid polarizer was employed to detect the vector components of the THz radiation. The two THz radiation images obtained through the polarizer tilted by +45° and −45° with respect to the detector's orientation were successfully transferred into the vector image of the supercurrent distribution. The observed distributions in the current-biased and the vortex-penetrated films were qualitatively explained using Bean's critical-state model [E. H. Brandt and M. Indenbom, Phys. Rev. B 48, 12893 (1993)]. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have demonstrated that the supercurrent distribution in current-biased YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films can be obtained by measuring the radiation power of THz electromagnetic pulses excited with femtosecond laser pulses. As the radiation power is proportional to the square of the bias current density at the laser spot position, the two-dimensional current distribution can be obtained from the intensity distribution of THz radiation by scanning the laser spot. The characteristic supercurrent distribution is analyzed by using the critical-state model. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: By numerical calculation, it is shown that vortices are sequentially generated on the background charged layer forming parallel shear flows in a two-dimensional low beta incompressible plasma when the charged layer is locally disturbed by a small amount of additional charge. Numerical experiments are performed in a rectangular domain with 0〈x〈Lx and −Ly/2〈y〈Ly/2 and the background charged layers are distributed to form the plasma flow U in the x direction with a velocity shear of ∂U/∂y≠0. The boundaries at x=0 and Lx are to supply plasmas identical to the background plasma initially loaded inside the domain. The plasma particles reaching the boundaries are freely allowed to leave the experimental domain. A vortex (named the mother vortex) first develops the local charge disturbance initially given, and subsequently new vortices (named the daughter vortices) are generated on the charged layer. This can be thought of as a result of propagation of the initial disturbance: A relative plasma flow as seen from the mother vortex can carry downstream the disturbances originating from the vortex, which can trigger growth of the daughter vortex. The numerical experiments in our nonperiodic system show that the intervals between the vortices are relatively close to the wavelength of the most unstable mode predicted by the linear analysis for periodic vortices. It is also shown that the temporal growth rate γ of the vortex in its early growing period is comparable to the corresponding linear growth rate of the unstable periodic vortices with the same wavelength.

Notes: A new metabolite of cholesterol was found in reaction mixtures containing cholesterol or 4-cholesten-3-one as a substrate and extra- or intracellular protein extracts from recombinant Streptomyces lividans and Escherichia coli strains carrying cloned DNA fragments of Streptomyces sp. SA-COO, the producer of Streptomyces cholesterol oxidase. The new metabolite was identified as 4-cholesten-6-ol-3-one based on comparisons of its high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, infrared and proton-nuclear magnetic resonance spectra with those of an authentic standard. Genetic analyses showed that the enzyme responsible for the production of 4-cholesten-6-ol-3-one is cholesterol oxidase encoded by the choA gene. Commercially purified cholesterol oxidase (EC 1.1.3.6.) of a Streptomyces sp., as well as of Brevibacterium sterolicum and a Pseudomonas sp., and a highly purified recombinant Streptomyces cholesterol oxidase were also able to catalyse the 6-hydroxylation reaction. Hydrogen peroxide accumulating in the reaction mixtures as a consequence of the 3β-hydroxysteroid oxidase activity of the enzyme was shown to have no role in the formation of the 6-hydroxylated derivative. We propose a possible scheme of a branched reaction pathway for the concurrent formation of 4-cholesten-3-one and 4-chotesten-6-ol-3-one by cholesterol oxidase, and the observed differences in the rate of formation of the 6-hydroxy-ketosteroid by the enzymes of different bacterial sources are also discussed.

Notes: Klebsiella pullulanase is a lipoprotein synthesized as a precursor with a signal peptide, which is processed by lipoprotein signal peptidase. To clarify the role of lipid modification of pullulanase, we purified lipid-modified wild-type and the unmodified (mutant) pullulanases and compared their properties. The Km and Vmax values of both pullulanases for pullulan were the same. The optimal pH and temperature, the stabilities over pH and temperature ranges, the specificity of substrates, and the patterns of inhibition of the lipid-modified and unmodified pullulanases were also the same. However, we found that the wild-type pullulanase formed trimers whereas the unmodified enzyme did not, and that the migrations of the two enzymes on sodium dodecyl sulphate/electrophoresis were different when the samples were applied on the gel without heating. The results presented in this paper and in previous work show that the correct processing and translocation of pullulanase in K. aerogenes require modification of lipid. However, the enzymatic properties and physical stabilities of pullulanase were not affected by the lipid modification.
