The effect of treating a ZrF4-based fluoride-glass surface with hydrogen fluoride gas is investigated using secondary-ion mass spectroscopy. The analysis reveals that this treatment is effective in reducing the oxygen concentration at the surface. A strong fiber with a mean tensile strength of 550 MPa and maximum strength of 600 MPa is successfully fabricated by using this technique.
