    Notes: Abstract Eleven fish species from the Weddell Sea (Antarctic) were examined for infestation with anisakid nematodes. Two species of the genus Contracaecum and the sealworm Pseudoterranova decipiens were isolated from the liver and the body cavity of fish affected. Only two specimens of P. decipiens (1.4%) partly invaded the belly flaps. The following fish species were infested by P. decipiens at the given prevalences: Cygnodraco mawsoni (74.4%), Trematomus scotti (23.2%), Pagetopsis maculatus (10.0%), Cryodraco antarcticus (7.1%), Trematomus lepidorhinus (3.0%), and Dolloidraco longedorsalis (2.7%). All of these, except Trematomus scotti, are new host records. Chaenodraco wilsoni, Chionodraco myersi, Gerlachea australis, Racovitzia glacialis and T. eulepidotus were not infested. The reasons for low prevalence and intensity of infestation are seen in the difficulties of P. decipiens in completing its benthic life cycle in the Weddell Sea environment, in the absence of shallow coastal waters due to the floating shelf-ice. Cygnodraco mawsoni is a crucial intermediate host, without which completion of the parasite life cycle might not be possible. In order to clarify the taxonomical position of Antarctic Pseudoterranova, morphological comparisons with specimens of P. decipiens from the German and Norwegian coast were made using scanning electron microscopy. Results revealed no differences; hence, all specimens studied belong to the same species P. decipiens.

    Notes: Abstract Arabidopsis proteins were predicted which share an 80 residue zinc finger domain known from ADP-ribosylation factor GTPase-activating proteins (ARF GAPs). One of these is a 37 kDa protein, designated ZAC, which has a novel domain structure in which the N-terminal ARF GAP domain and a C-terminal C2 domain are separated by a region without homology to other known proteins. Zac promoter/β-glucuronidase reporter assays revealed highest expression levels in flowering tissue, rosettes and roots. ZAC protein was immuno-detected mainly in association with membranes and fractionated with Golgi and plasma membrane marker proteins. ZAC membrane association was confirmed in assays by a fusion between ZAC and the green fluorescence protein and prompted an analysis of the in vitro phospholipid-binding ability of ZAC. Phospholipid dot-blot and liposome-binding assays indicated that fusion proteins containing the ZAC-C2 domain bind anionic phospholipids non-specifically, with some variance in Ca2+ and salt dependence. Similar assays demonstrated specific affinity of the ZAC N-terminal region (residues 1–174) for phosphatidylinositol 3-monophosphate (PI-3-P). Binding was dependent in part on an intact zinc finger motif, but proteins containing only the zinc finger domain (residues 1–105) did not bind PI-3-P. Recombinant ZAC possessed GTPase-activating activity on Arabidopsis ARF proteins. These data identify a novel PI-3-P-binding protein region and thereby provide evidence that this phosphoinositide is recognized as a signal in plants. A role for ZAC in the regulation of ARF-mediated vesicular transport in plants is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Eubothrium vittevitellatus is re-described with particular attention being paid to scolex characters seen by scanning electron microscopy in material obtained from the intestines of the sand fish (Trichodon trichodon) from Kamchatka Bay. It is confirmed as a valid species distinguishable from others in the genus by the combined characters of scolex shape, muscle arrangement and position of vitelline follicles. Peculiarities in the distribution and specificity of the species of Eubothrium highlighted by E. vittevitellatus are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Scolices ofEubothrium crassum from brown trout,E. salvelini from char,E. parvum from mallotus,Bothriocephalus sp. from three-spined stickleback, andTriaenophorus spp. from pike were studied using scanning electron microscopy (S.E.M.) and light microscopy, only the two first mentioned species were sectioned for transmission electron microscopy (T.E.M.). All scoleces examined with S.E.M. were characterized by ‘spherical bodies’ appearing on the scolex surface. Studied with T.E.M. these ‘bodies’ turned out to be cytoplasmic protrusions containing secretory granules. These protrusions seemed to be nipped off as globular structures which freed single secretory granules. The present study also emphasizes the use of S.E.M. as a tool in cestode taxonomy and clarifies some of the problems and confusion that have surrounded the scolex morphology and shape ofE. crassum andE. salvelini.

    Notes: Abstract The functional morphology of the scolex of two species ofTetrabothrius from penguins from Bouvet Island in the Antarctic as revealed by scanning electron and light microscopy is described. These two species,T. pauliani from chintrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica) andTetrabothrius sp. from macaroni penguins (Edyptes chrysolophus), possessed scoleces with a somewhat different appearance and the way in which they attach to the host gut also turned out to be different. InT. pauliani the auricles were well developed and played a major role in the attachment process while the bothridia functioned as lateral shallow suckers. InTetrabothrius sp. the auricles were very small and played an inferior role in the attachment process while the bothridia acted as powerful anteriorly directed cup-like suckers. In addition the definition of and the difference between cyclophyllidean acetabula and Tetrabothriidean bothridia are briefly discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The seasonal variation in the infection of saithe (Pollachius virens), cod (Gadus morhua), and redfish (Sebastes marinus) from a coastal area of central Norway with Anisakis simplex third-stage larvae (L3) was studied over a period of 1 year. In all three host species there was an increase in the abundance of the parasite in spring, with a peak appearing in March and April. Cod displayed the most distinct seasonal variation, showing a clear abundance peak in April. The abundance peak in April for redfish was not as pronounced. In saithe the abundance over the seasons was less prominent, with a maximum appearing in March and another increase in abundance occurring during July. It is apparent that the causes behind the pattern of infection observed in this study are complex. However, possible explanatory mechanisms are discussed. Arguments are propounded to suggest that the increased supply of parasite eggs from northward-migrating whales in addition to the general spring bloom of plankton constitute the most important factors governing the phenomenon of “spring rise” in A. simplex L3 in the study area.

    Notes: Summary A type of Diphyllobothrium plerocercoid found in blue whiting, Micromestius poutasson, caught near the north edge of the Faeroe Banks, is described. The most dominant characters of these larvae are their typical dorsoventrally flattened body and their fully extruded and “adult”-like scolex. A morphological comparison with perocercoids of D. dendriticum, D. ditremum and D. latum is given.

    Notes: Summary A total of 311 perch were examined for gut parasites during the period from April 1972 to December 1973. Four different metazoan parasites were found;Proteocephalus percae (Müller, 1780),Bunodera luciopercae (Müller, 1776),Acanthocephalus lucii Müller, 1776 andCamallanus lacustris Zoega, 1776.B. luciopercae andP. percae exhibited similar seasonal cycles in appearance and abundance. They were both absent from the fish population during June/July.A. lucii andC. lacustris on the other hand had a peak in infection intensity and incidence during the summer and autumn months. From September/October one year to May/June the following yearB. luciopercae was the dominating parasite species showing the highest incidence (≈95%) and intensity (a mean of about 25 parasites per infected fish). When 2×2 contingency tests were applied on the material from this period a significant negative correlation between the presence ofP. percae andA. lucii could be pointed out while there was no correlation between the presence of any of the other 3 parasite species.
