Voltage holding characteristics and beam optics of a multiaperture, five-stage electrostatic accelerator were investigated to demonstrate ampere class negative hydrogen ion beam acceleration up to an energy of 1 MeV for the ITER NBI. The accelerator was conditioned up to a voltage of 920 kV without beam. It was confirmed that an optimum beam perveance of the accelerator agrees well with a beam trajectory simulation. Each row of beamlet was clearly distinguished by a video camera at the optimum condition. A highest beam energy of 868 keV with an acceleration current of 19 mA for a duration of 1 s was obtained from 9 apertures of 14 mm in diameter each. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
