Beschreibung: Ice Watch is coordinating the collection and archival of visual sea ice observations recorded on ships in the Northern Hemisphere. Open source software, Arctic Shipborne Sea Ice Standardization Tool (ASSIST), can be used by observers to record sea ice conditions. International vessels report near real-time observations of ice concentration, ice thickness, stage of growth or melt, surface roughness and many other variables. The observation method is extended from the ASPeCt observation protocol, with additional observation fields added to document the stage of melt of sea ice. The majority of cruises are during the summer melt season and on-set of ice growth in September and October. The standard observation protocol and program to coordinate data collection is documented in the companion manuscript to this data set. Northern hemisphere data submitted to the Ice Watch program, via icewatch.gina.alaska.edu, will be archived in records with the label 'ASSIST'.

Beschreibung: Sea ice drift was measured by Surface Velocity Profiler 2020P225, aka Pos_PRIC_20, an autonomous platform, installed on drifting sea ice in the Arctic Ocean during MOSAiC (Leg 3) 2019/20. The time series describes the position and additional parameters of the buoy between 23 April 2020 and 11 November 2020 in sample intervals of 1 hour.

Beschreibung: The radar system on board of Polarstern features a rotating antenna that is mounted on the observation deck, above the bridge. The antenna transmit microwave pulses at short intervals, which are reflected back to the radar system by the water or pack ice. This produces an image of the positions of ice floes within a radius of 3 nautical miles (ca. 5,4 km) and their sizes in relation to the ship. The imaging technique offers an undiminished view and remains unaffected by weather or darkness, i.e., it can penetrate rain clouds and fog and therefore offers an undiminished view even at night. The sector without information is blogged by ship facilities. The RV Polarstern's marine radar systems operated throughout the drift phase of MOSAiC. The imaging system, which shows Polarstern in the centre of the screen, offers vital information on floe movements, deformation and formation of cracks in the ship's immediate vicinity.

Beschreibung: Temperature and heating-induced temperature differences were measured along a chain of thermistors. SIMBA 2020T74 (a.k.a. PRIC_10_02, IRIDIUM number 300234068225520) is an autonomous instrument that was installed on drifting sea ice in the Arctic Ocean during the 3rd leg of the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) in April 2020. The buoy was deployed at the site with about 2 km from the ship with initial thicknesses of snow and ice of 0.08 and 1.70 m, respectively, on 4 April 2020. The thermistor chain was 5 m long and included 241 sensors with a regular spacing of 2 cm. The depths for the sensors are 98 to -380 cm, referring to the initial interface between snow and ice. The last sensor was used to measure the air temperature at 1 m above the initial snow surface. The resulting time series describes the evolution of temperature and temperature differences after two heating cycles of 30 and 120 s as a function of depth and time between 4 April 2020 and 7 August 2020 in sample intervals of 6 hours for temperature and 24 hours for temperature differences. In addition to temperature, geographic position, barometric pressure, tilt and compass were measured.
