Description: This dataset contains the rawdata of a microthermometric study of fluid inclusions in hydrothermal precipitates and 87Sr/86Sr composition of their host sulfate minerals. The samples were recovered at Brothers volcano, originate from the NW Caldera and the Upper Caldera vent sites and were retrieved during RV Sonne cruise SO253 in December 2016/January 2017 and during RV Thompson cruise TN350 in March 2018. The fluid inclusion dataset contains 〉400 measurements of ice melting temperatures, 〉340 measurements of homogenization temperatures and includes a detailed descriptions of the measured fluid inclusions. The 87Sr/86Sr dataset contains Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) measurments of 5 single crystal and 6 bulk samples of the fluid inclusion (sulfate) samples or material taken in direct adjacency.

In:  Supplement to: Dziadek, Ricarda; Gohl, Karsten; Diehl, Alexander; Kaul, Norbert (2017): Geothermal heat flux in the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica: New insights from temperature measurements, depth to the bottom of the magnetic source estimation, and thermal modeling. Description: Focused research on the Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers, which drain the West Antarctic Ice Shelf (WAIS) into the Amundsen Sea Embayment (ASE), revealed strong signs of instability in recent decades that result from variety of reasons, such as inflow of warmer ocean currents and reverse bedrock topography and has been established as the Marine Ice Sheet Instability hypothesis. Geothermal heat flux (GHF) is a poorly constrained parameter in Antarctica and suspected to affect basal conditions of ice sheets, i.e. basal melting and subglacial hydrology. Thermomechanical models demonstrate the influential boundary condition of geothermal heat flux for (paleo) ice sheet stability. Due to a complex tectonic and magmatic history of West Antarctica, the region is suspected to exhibit strong heterogeneous geothermal heat flux variations. We present an approach to investigate ranges of realistic heat fluxes in the ASE by different methods, discuss direct observations, and 3D numerical models that incorporate boundary conditions derived from various geophysical studies, including our new Depth to the Bottom of the Magnetic Source (DBMS) estimates. Our in-situ temperature measurements at 26 sites in the ASE more than triples the number of direct GHF observations in West Antarctica. We demonstrate by our numerical 3D models that GHF spatially varies from 68 mW/m² up to 110 mW/m².

    Publication Date: 2024-04-20
Description: Please note that a newer version of this dataset is available (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.935649)! MARHYS (MARine HYdrothermal Solutions) database is a global compilation of marine hydrothermal vent fluid compositions. The database includes data presented in journal publications, book chapter and monographs and includes compositions of hydrothermal fluids, end members and background seawater. Detailed sample information (metadata) is provided along with the chemical composition and enables unique identification of discrete vent fluid samples. The database contains concentrations of major-, minor- and trace elements, as well as, reduced carbon compounds and isotope compositions. All concentrations are converted into units per kg of vent fluid and chemical data of unique samples reported in different publications are merged to unique sample entries. The main file containing the final product is: "MARHYS_DB_1_0.xlsx" The remaining files are provided to be able to track the processing of the data: "MARHYS_DB_1_0_Rawdata.xlsx" provides a one-by-one copy of the single datasets as provided in the original source. "MARHYS_DB_1_0_RawdataConverted.xlsx" provides a one-by-one copy of the single datasets with converted units. "MARHYS_DB_1_0_Unmerged.xlsx" provides the data in the format of MARHYS Database without sample entries being merged. "MARHYS_DB_1_0_MergeHistory.xlsx" provides a list of all sample entries that were merged. Please note: We encourage users of the database to also cite the original literature whenever possible. If you want to adress any inquiries about the database do not hesitate to contact the support center (marhys@uni-bremen.de). The database is an ongoing project and will be updated twice a year. The data files are exclusively provided as excel sheets and show up when clicking "view dataset as html" below.

Description: Please note that a newer version of this dataset is available (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.958978)! This is version 2.0 of MARHYS (MARine HYdrothermal Solutions) database. For general information about the database, check out the initial publication Diehl & Bach, 2020 (https://doi.org/10.1029/2020GC009385) and Version 1.0 of the database (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.921794). In brief, following changes have applied in the course of compilation of MARHYS database version 2.0: -A large number of new vent sites from following regions is now incorporated in the database: southern Mid Atlantic Ridge, Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge, Juan de Fuca Ridge, Okinawa Trough, Lau Basin, Manus Basin, and some more (The database has grown about nearly 50% and now contains 3394 merged entries, compared to 2374 merged entries in Version 1.0). -The complete sample information section for a larger number of entries was overhauled to achieve more consistency between different datasets and within individual vent sites (additional Sample ID's have been adjusted to fit the database naming scheme and to ensure unique sample entries). -Some new species were included. -A small number of faulty concentrations were detected and corrected. -A number of vent areas in the Manus Basin were erroneously classified in Version 1.0 and are now re-classified as back-arc spreading centers (Susu, Desmos, PACMANUS). -The shape of the spreadsheet was improved by freezing the "Sample ID" column, as well as, the parameter and unit rows to provide users more comfort when browsing the database. -The built-in Excel filter function is now turned on by default (row 14) and enables users to easier generate sub-datasets of interest. -A complete reference list of the database Version 1.0 can be found in Diehl & Bach, 2020. To provide an updated reference list, the data files given below are complemented by the Word file MARHYS_DB_2_0_ReferenceList.docx. The main file containing the final product is: MARHYS_DB_2_0.xlsx The remaining files are provided to be able to track the processing of the data: MARHYS_DB_2_0_Rawdata.xlsx provides a one-by-one copy of the single datasets as provided in the original source. MARHYS_DB_2_0_RawdataConverted.xlsx provides a one-by-one copy of the single datasets with converted units. MARHYS_DB_2_0_Unmerged.xlsx provides the data in the format of MARHYS Database without sample entries being merged. MARHYS_DB_2_0_MergeHistory.xlsx provides a list of all sample entries that were merged. MARHYS_DB_2_0_ReferenceList.docx provides a list of all sample entries that were merged. Please note: We encourage users of the database to also cite the original literature whenever possible.
