Notes: Abstract ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) is shown as a very sensitive method for quantitative determination of Th and U concentration and excretion analysis in urine without any sample pretreatment. The current standard method for incorporation monitoring applies alpha-spectrometry, a very tedious and time consuming technique. ICP-MS offers an attractive alternative for monitoring of thorium and uranium body burdens in occupationally exposed subjects and also larger groups of the general population. A limit of determination of 0.5 ng/L in aqueous solutions and 1 ng/L in urine samples for both elements was achieved, with a precision of about ± 10% in the concentration range of appr. 10 ng/L. Due to the lack of a suitable reference material, the accuracy of the method was tested by comparing some of the results with those obtained by α-spectrometry, especially for U. There was a sufficient agreement on both results.

Notes: Abstract The capability of double focussing magnetic sector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS) for the determination of trace elements in different body fluids was investigated in commercially available control materials. The elements included in this study were: Al, As, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Tl and Zn. Sample preparation, instrument stability and the results, which are in very good agreement to the given values, are presented and discussed.

Notes: Abstract Over a period of 4 months long- and short time stability (precision) of a high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (HR-ICP-MS) was investigated using an ELEMENT (Finnigan MAT, Germany) instrument. By using a special torch design, significant improvements could be achieved. Without changing any electrical parameters of the mass spectrometer, the long time stability over a time period of 4 months was measured as about ± 15% for 115In for all three steps of resolution (300, 3000, 7500). The short time stability over a period of 2–8 h was measured as about ± 10% (at maximum), also nearly independent of the resolution. The main result was the near independence of the stability from the mass-spectrometer itself, but a strong dependence on the sample introduction system, the ICP-torch and the cones.

Notes: Abstract Urinary arsenic speciation is considered to be an effective procedure to differentiate between toxic inorganic and less toxic organic arsenic exposure. The aim of the present work was to develop a new method for the simultaneous determination of the main arsenic species so far detected in urine: arsenite (As(III)), arsenate (As(V)), methylarsonic acid (MA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), and arsenobetaine (AsB). The method is based on anion exchange HPLC coupled on-line to an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) for element specific detection. Experimental parameters, such as column type and composition of the mobile phases were optimized in order to get best separation, little matrix interferences, lowest detection limits, and short total times of analyses. Best chromatographic conditions were obtained by using a Dionex AS14 anion exchange column and a gradient elution with tetramethylammonium hydroxide and ammonium carbonate as eluting compounds. The detection limits (3 σ) were found to be in the sub μg L–1 range. The method was applied to analyze different urine samples from persons with and without consumption of seafood. To avoid significant matrix influences, samples (24 h urine) had to be diluted 1 : 5 with water and were filtered through a 0.45 μm filter prior to analyses. Special attention was focused on the validation of the method according to the regulations of the “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft” (DFG) for the analyses of hazardous substances in biological materials.

Notes: Abstract Urinary excretion of232Th was assessed, in occupationally non-exposed persons by means of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Measurements were performed in 55 healthy subjects. Mean daily232Th excretion was 47±26 μBq·d−1 (range 17–121 μBq·d−1). Results obtained showed no statistically significant correlation with age and no differences were found between males and females. The impact on the assessment of intakes by workers is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been applied to the assessment of urinary uranium excretion in non-exposed subjects. The sensitivity of the method is high enough to determine238U concentration in unprocessed urine in any subject. Data obtained so far show a significant increase of238U excretion with age and no differences between males and females.

Notes: Abstract A digestion procedure for silicate containing matrices like soil, sludge, etc. by using a commercially available pressure ashing device (Seif-Aufschluβtechnik, Germany) with PFA (perfluoroalkoxy) sample vessels is described at the results for different matrix- and trace elements in different suitable certified standard reference materials. The advantages of this technique compared with the use of Teflon®-(PTFE, polytetrafluoroethylene) vessels and the open treatment in Pt-crucibles will be discussed.

Notes: Abstract A method for the Mo-determination in human serum or plasma is described, employing ICP-MS coupled with graphite furnace atomization. Because of severe differences between the slopes of an aqueous calibration function and the signals produced in native serum samples, the standard addition method has to be used. Seventy serum samples from healthy individuals in the age between 2 and 60 years have been investigated. The mean value for the Mo-concentration found was 0.58±0.34 μg/l.
