    Description: Th Messina Straits (southern Italy) on December 28, 1908 was struck by a Ms=7.5, seismic event, that was the largest earthquake occurred in Italy during the last 100 years. The earthquake and the related tsunami caused thousands of victims and severe destruction in a wide area along the Sicilian and Calabrian coasts. After that time many geophysical and geological studies were developed to evaluate the seismic characteristics of the 1908 earthquake, the seismic risk and the geological evolution of the region in the framework of the Mediterranean geodynamics, characterized by the collision between the African and Eurasian plates. With the aim to evaluate the present crustal motion of this area, that undergone a recent tectonic evolution that produced an important uplift during the last 125 Kyears, since 1970 was started a geodetic research. A geodetic network was set up across the Straits and repeatedly measured with terrestrial techniques till 1980. In 1987, a 7 vertices network (4 vertices in common with the already existent network) was surveyed for the first time by the GPS space technique, improving the accuracy of the coordinate determinations. Finally, in 1994 a wider network was established and surveyed again to collect additional GPS observations about a larger area across the Straits. In this paper we provide a general geophysical description of the Area and the results obtained by the analysis of two GPS surveys (1987 and 1994) with respect to those achieved by the terrestrial surveys (from 1970 to 1980). Our analysis leads to exclude the occurrence of significant crustal horizontal deformations across the Straits in ha last 15 years; this conclusion is in agreement with current geophysical models that exclude any aseismic deformations acting in this area.

    Description: In this paper we present the GPS data collected at 18 stations of the IGM95 GPS network, in the colfiorito and Sellano areas. The data show ground deformations due to the largest earthquakes of the umbria-marche seismic sequence of September-October, 1997. The first two events, occurred on September 26, Mw=5.7 and Mw=6.0, produced planoaltimetric displacements up to 25 cm in the Colfiorito area. The October 14, 1997 earthquake, occurred near Sellano village and produced visible ground deformations that were not revealed at the GPS monuments dut to the unfavorable GPS IGM95 network configuration in this area. We present and discuss the whole geodetic data set collected in the area, useful to update the 3-D coordinates of the IGM95 GPS monuments, for scientific and civil applications.

    Description: The recent development of the Global Positioning System geodetic technique allow the determination of the separation between the ellipsoid and the geoid if GPS-derived elevations are compared with spirit leveling measurements; this approach may provide a contribution to the definition of the geoidal ondulation even on areas such as the Italian peninsula characterized by wide roughness of topography and very complex geological and structural features. With this aim in 1993 we measured by the GPS technique the position of 32 benchmarks along some of the Italian first order leveling routes located across the Apenninic chain. The simultaneous surveys performed on ITRF stations and on 5 tide gauge stations, may provide an accurate constrain of the gravimetric geoid recently computed by DIIAR in Milan, Italy.

    Description: The results of two survey methods, geological photointerpretation and historical photogrammetry, are compared in order to evaluate the temporal evolution of a unstable slope located in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines (Italy). Historical aerial photos of the area, derived from photogrammetric surveys conducted in 1954 (scale 1:60000), in 1971 (scale 1:20000), and in 1976 (scale 1:17000) were available. A photogrammetric flight was further conducted in 2000, at a scale of 1:4400, with a traditional GPS ground survey support. First, the results of photographic analysis with the photointerpretation method are presented: the landslides are described from a geological point of view, showing its temporal evolution. To quantitatively assess the landslide movements, Digital Terrain Models were generated by means of an analytical plotter and a digital photogrammetric workstation, with semi-automatic and automatic procedures. To generate these products, it was necessary to solve problems related to a lack of data concerning the aerial cameras used for the historical flights (internal orientation) and the difficulty identifying control points on the photos in order to define the external orientation. An unconventional photogrammetric methodology, based on identification of homologous points in zones considered outside the landslide area, has been there developed and tested to insert the various surveys into a single reference system.

    Description: A network of nine permanent GPS stations, six of them located in Italy (Cagliari, Matera, Medicina, Noto, Padova and Torino), the other three in Central Europe (Graz, Zimmervald and Wettzell) was been analyzed four times from October 1996 till 1998. After the GPS data processing, a rigorous statistical analysis based on the F (Fisher) test applied on the detected coordinate differences showed significant displacement at Matera, Medicina and Noto. The mean velocities computed for these sites with respect to Wettzell are (0.6 ± 0.3) cm/yr for Matera, (0.7 ± 2) cm/yr for Medicina and (0.6 ± 0.3) cm/yr for Noto.GPS velocities agree with those derived by VLBI and ITRF96 solutions, provided error ellipses are taken into account. The deformation analysis of the last time span shows a suspicious horizontal jump at Padova of (1.0 ± 0.1) cm corresponding to an antenna changing within the same period. This fact shows, in spite of the care used in permanent GPS installation, how the results of the deformation analysis may be strongly conditioned by site problems.

    Description: Geodetic and seismic evidence of crustal deformations in the Ionian area are shown in this paper. The Ionian GPS network, composed of nine sites crossing the Ionian Sea from Calabria, Southern Italy, to Northwestern Greece, was established and surveyed in 1991, 1994, 1995 within the framework of the TYRGEONET project (Anzidei et al., 1996). In 1996 a return campaign was carried out after the occurrence of seismic activity in 1995. The displacement pattern obtained for the Greek side of the network agrees well with those previously displayed, both in magnitude and direction, confirming a mean displacement rate of about 1-2 cm1/yr. The same agreement is not found for the Italian side of the network, where no significant deformations were detected between 1994 and 1996. Seismic deformation was also studied for the same area, starting from the moment tensors of events which occurred in the last 20 years with magnitude greater than 5.0; evident similarity with the displacement field exhibited by the Greek side of the Ionian Sea by geodetic surveys was inferred. On the contrary, the motion detected for the Italian area cannot be simply related to seismic activity.

    Description: This paper concerns the displacement field of the central-western part of the Mediterranean basin estimated by the analysis of three repeated GPS surveys (1995, 1996 and 1997) consisting of 8 sites of a network. This network includes for the first time the stations of Algiers and Arzew, located in Northern Algeria, an area not yet investigated by regional GPS surveys. Lampedusa station is located in the Sicily Straits rifting area while the other five stations of Cagliari, Wettzell, Madrid, Matera and Noto belong to the IGS permanent tracking network. The statistical analysis of 1995, 1996 and 1997 data show significant displacements at five stations. The displacement vectors of the African sites show a convergence between the African and the Eurasian plates at a rate of 0.8 ± 0.4 cm within a two year time span. A comparison between the displacements estimated in the present work and the ITRF96 determinations for the five permanent stations allow us to evaluate the motion of Lampedusa, Algiers and Arzew in the IERS Terrestrial Reference System.
