Notes: Summary Rhesus monkeys evoked a vigorous antibody response to a single heteroimmunization dose of zona pellucida antigens, when these were administered along with complete Freud's adjuvant. The antisera recognized all the three major porcine zona glycoprotein families and the animals were rendered amenorrheic after such immunization. Monkeys immunized with zona without adjuvant, however, failed to show any anti-zona antibody response and had normal menstrual cycles. Zona pellucida glycoproteins are thus not effective immunogens unless administered along with a powerful adjuvant.

Notes: Abstract Caffeine causes severe retardation of growth and development and high mortality of larvae Telmatoscopus albipunctatus. In general, sensitivity to caffeine is inversely proportional to the age of the treated larvae. Adults originating from treated larvae show lower fertility. Treatment of pupae results in elongated abdomens, abnormal wings and reduced fertility in adults. Caffeine also affects adversely polytenization of chromosomes. It is suggested that effects on larval growth and polytenization of chromosomes are due to retardation of DNA synthesis. Other possible mechanisms of action of caffeine are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A total of 21 cases of granuloma caused by Aspergillus species were encountered during the period 1972–79. The organs involved were nasal and paranasal sinuses, brain, orbit, subcutaneous tissue of cheek, lungs and endocardial valve in the decreasing order of their frequency. Aspergillus flavus was the main etiological agent. Immunodiffusion tests with various Aspergillus species as antigen showed a positivity of 17 out of 18 (94.4 per cent) cases. The role of precipitins in diagnosis and prognosis of the disease has been discussed.

Notes: Abstract: In this paper we study rings R with an involution whose symmetric units satisfy a group identity. An important example is given by FG, the group algebra of a group G over a field F; in fact FG has a natural involution induced by setting g?g −1 for all group elements g∈G. In case of group algebras if F is infinite, charF≠ 2 and G is a torsion group we give a characterization by proving the following: the symmetric units satisfy a group identity if and only if either the group of units satisfies a group identity (and a characterization is known in this case) or char F=p 〉0 and 1) FG satisfies a polynomial identity, 2) the p-elements of G form a (normal) subgroup P of G and G/P is a Hamiltonian 2-group; 3) G is of bounded exponent 4p s for some s≥ 0.

Notes: Summary A qualitative and quantitative analysis of lectin-binding sites has been undertaken on spermatozoa recovered from different regions of the epididymis of the goat (Capra indicus) using fluorescein isothiocyanate-linked lectins (Bauhinia purpurea BPA, Concanavalin A Con A, Dolichos biflorus DBA, Maclura pomifera MPA, Arachis hypogaea or peanut agglutinin PNA, Glycine max or soyabean agglutinin SBA, Ulex europaeus UEA, and Triticum vulgaris or wheat-germ agglutinin WGA), in conjunction with scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and freeze-fracture techniques. Flow cytometric analysis has also been used to quantitize binding affinity. Spermatozoa from caput to cauda epididymidis show no significant variation in lectinbinding ability, but the samples removed from the corpus epididymidis contain a greater number of binding sites. The passage of spermatozoa through the epididymidis is accompanied by a redistribution of the plasma membrane lectin-receptors covering the sperm head and tail. Receptors for BPA, DBA, PNA and SBA are specifically restricted to the anterior region of the acrosome in caudal spermatozoa. Freeze-fracture replicas, examined to study changes in organisation of intramembranous particles of the plasma membrane during sperm maturation, reveal distinct changes in their distribution in the acrosome, post-acrosome and spermatozoon tail, especially in the corpus and cauda epididymidis.
