    Notes: Femtosecond time-resolved impulsive stimulated scattering (ISS) data from carbon disulphide at three temperatures are presented and analyzed in terms of molecular orientational motions which show weakly oscillatory, librational dynamics at short times (〈1 ps) and rotational diffusion at longer times. The data are collected with a light polarization combination that eliminates signal due to electronic polarizabilities. Compared to ISS data reported earlier [S. Ruhman et al., Chem. Phys. Lett. 141, 16 (1987)], this permits improved examination of molecular motion at times shorter than 150 fs. The data also extend to longer times (several picoseconds) with good signal/noise ratios, permitting a more complete analysis of the molecular response. Finally, an improved analysis of the data is presented. Angular position correlation functions, which are determined from the data, are related to angular velocity correlation functions (AVCFs) through a Kubo line shape analysis. Approximate analytical models of liquid-state molecular dynamics which account for inhomogeneity and stochastic forces are then used to fit the AVCFs, rather than to fit the data itself as was done earlier. In the context of the models, we extract information about intermolecular torques and the extent of inhomogeneity in the torques.

    Notes: A transient grating technique has been used to measure film thicknesses in five multilayer film structures. Through-plane acoustic responses are observed through time-resolved diffraction that reveals their return to the free surface after partial reflections within the structure. Optical heterodyne detection with a controlled reference field amplitude permits optimization of the signal/noise ratio relative to detection of the signal against the far stronger incident probe field or against a dark background (homodyne detection). In-plane acoustic waves are also generated and observed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A laser-based ultrasonic technique, impulsive stimulated thermal scattering (ISTS), is used to characterize the acoustic waveguide behavior in a series of silicon-supported and free-standing polyimide bilayer structures. The experimental results demonstrate that multilayer structures are characterizable using ISTS measurements. In addition, simulations of acoustic waveguide behavior in coatings with very thin interfacial layers adjacent to the substrate and in films with continuously changing elastic properties are presented. The results indicate depth-profiling possibilities using ISTS. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An extension of the impulsive stimulated thermal scattering method that allows for one-laser-shot characterization of thin film thermal and viscoelastic properties is described. The technique is demonstrated through an extensive study of free-standing thin (∼1 μm) polyimide films. An exact, analytical solution for excitation of the waveguide acoustic modes is given and used to extract the viscoelastic properties of the films. It is also shown how the technique can be used to detect film delaminations by comparing results from free standing films to results from films tightly bound to silicon substrates.

    Notes: A transient grating technique is used to detect picosecond acoustic pulses in supported metal films. Crossed femtosecond laser pulses generate acoustic responses with longitudinal components propagating normal to the film plane and surface acoustic wave components propagating in the film plane. Surface "ripple" associated with both components is detected through the diffraction of a probe beam. The measurements yield enhanced information content for characterization of film thickness and mechanical properties. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A transient grating laser ultrasonic method known as real-time impulsive stimulated thermal scattering is used to excite and monitor Lamb acoustic waveguide modes in free-standing thin polyimide films which are known to have transverse isotropic symmetry.     Notes: A method for real-time optical characterization of thin-film acoustic modes is demonstrated. Pseudo-Rayleigh acoustic waves of thin (∼1 μm) polyimide films attached to silicon substrates are optically excited and monitored in real time as they propagate.     Notes: We develop a theory of photon-echo phenomena in harmonic vibrational modes. Although classical harmonic oscillators cannot produce any nonlinear optical signal in the linear response limit, we demonstrate that quantum harmonic oscillators that are coupled to any physically reasonable bath can give rise to novel nonlinear optical behavior, even in the perturbative limit. We show that photon echoes in high-frequency vibrational modes are strongly affected by both population relaxation and pure dephasing. The time dependence of the echo signal is shown to be highly sensitive to the amount of inhomogeneous broadening in the vibrational line. As an example, we develop the simple model of population relaxation resulting from linear coupling to the bath and pure dephasing resulting from quadratic coupling to the bath. Counter to the classical picture, echo signal is present when the only coupling to the bath is linear, but absent when the only coupling is quadratic. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Molecular dynamics simulations have been applied to study solvent cage effects on photodissociation. The results show that when the solvent cages are sufficiently rigid, such as in Lennard-Jones glasses at low temperatures and high densities, or when solvent masses are substantially greater than solute masses, photoexcitation of a solute molecule to a repulsive excited state could lead to coherent oscillatory quasibound motion. This type of motion should be observable through femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.
