Summary Formulas useful for evaluation of finite strain measurements are collected. The well known “finite homogeneous strain” is shown as a “correct” but not always good approximation to finite strains as measured by extensometer or strain gage, whereas even for high strains the interpretation of measurements as infinitesimal strains, albeit “incorrect,” may be a better approximation, which improves as the maximum shear strain, the deviation from the principal directions, and any strain-free rotation entering the measurements decrease.
