Description / Table of Contents: The main purpose of the World Atlas of Snow and Ice Resources consists in the global appraisal of natural ice resources from the viewpoint of their utilization as a source of freshwater, as well as in the regional assessment of resources, their behavior, variability and in the possible use of ice and snow processes and phenomena. The Atlas is meant to systematize different data pertaining to snow and ice acquired during the last 30 years. The main concept of the Atlas is to identify all regions where ice and snow occur, and all natural phenomena concerned with ice and snow in these regions, changes that took place there in the past, and their present and forcastable state. The main emphasis is placed on the resources of snow and ice. Volume 1 of the Atlas contains about 700 main maps, the overall number being 1,100. The maps are scaled from 1:25,000 (in the case of individual glaciers) and 1:90,000,000 (for the world as whole). Volume 2 presents a monograph analyzing the natural objects dealt with in Volume 1. One will find there the principles of scientific methodology of investigation of snow and ice resources, the study of the governing laws of their occurence and behavior, and recommendations on their use. The Volume is arranged thematically so as to match the respective sections of the Atlas. [Volume 3] is intended for the readers and users of the Atlas who have no command of the Russian language. The supplementary deals with that part of the contents which is not translated into English in the Atlas itself.

Description / Table of Contents: This is the first attempt at compiling a comprehensive glossary of glaciology and related Earth sciences. The wordstock of this edition amounts to 2200 terms covering all types of snow and natural ice: snowcover, avalanches, sea, river, and lake ice, ground ice and aufice, as well as such phenomena as glacial mudflows. The entries contain definitions of terms with explicit references to related processes and phenomena. The glossary is provided with many figures and sample reference material. The glossary is considered for specialists in glaciology, hydrology, meteorology, climatology, geography, geophysics, and geology. It may serve as a textbook for university students ans as a manual for the highschool teachers.

Description / Table of Contents: This textbook presents the main principles and applications of stable and radioactive isotopes to the study of glaciers and ground ice. It includes a variety of features: the basic principles of stable and radioactive isotope study in the cryosphere, the preservation of ice records and measurement techniques. It describes the relationship of isotope fractionation and isotope composition with the temperature of precipitation for glaciers and ground ice and then uses these principles to explain cryospheric processes. It considers the records of ice cores from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, ice caps of the Arctic Islands and a number of mountain glaciers. Reference cross-sections for ice-wedges and massive ice of Late Pleistocene and Holocene age througout Siberia and Northern America are presented together with numerous diagrams and data tables. Modern research methods of radioactive isotope application for ground and glacier ice dating are discussed. The textbook is intended for undergraduates as well as graduates students. It will help geocryologists, glaciologists, geographers, geomorphologists, Quaternary geologists and paleoclimatologists to understand the outcome of isotopic processes occuring in cryosphere and to realize the important role they play in environmental evolution.

    Sankt-Peterburg : Gidrometeoizdat
    Call number: AWI G3-97-0019
Description / Table of Contents: The book "Regime and evolution of polar ice sheets" results glacier regime, dynamics and evolution studies, conducted in the Arctic and Antarctic by a team of explorers of the Institute of Geography, the USSR Academy of Sciences, for the last decade. The studies are based on the application of present-day remote sensing, geophysical, isotope-geochemical methods and multi-disciplinary investigations of deep boreholes and ice core. The history of glaciation in the northern and southern polar areas in the Cenozoic as well as structure, hydrothermal state and regime of subpolar glaciers, and peculiarities of their formation under conditions of climatic changes are analysed. Heat- and mass-exchange at the lower surface of Antarctic ice shelves, fluctuations of its marginal zone and those of Arctic glaciers are discussed in the book as well. The data presented are fundamental for formulating principles and methods of predicting the development of polar glaciers as an important block in the global system "glaciation - ocean - atmosphere", especially in relation to the supposed man-made warming of the climate. The book is intended for glaciologists, climatologists, geophysists, palaeogeographers, marine geologists and geographers.
