    Notes: Temperature changes during mechanical processing such as grinding of steel parts can cause phase changes in the microstructure. Thermal shock during the process can give rise to localized surface residual stress. The net result can be reduced wear resistance and fatigue life leading to early failure during service. Effective methods for the detection of such damage are necessary. Barkhausen emissions, which arise from discontinuous motion of domain walls, are sensitive to microstructual changes that affect domain dynamics. Detected Barkhausen signals are predominantly from a surface layer about 200 μm thick, those from deeper being attenuated due to eddy currents. An analysis of the detected signals can provide an indication of the surface condition of the material. Barkhausen signals from parts ground under controlled conditions were found to be dependent on the grinding process conditions. The signal changes were consistent with residual stress measured by x-ray diffraction and with hardness measurements that are indicative of changes in microstructure. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Introgression of the winter gene pool into spring wheat is being considered as one of the strategies to break through the yield plateau. However, little information is available on the combining ability of these two important but distinct groups of wheats in Indian conditions. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to determine the combining ability and gene action of yield and yield attributes in winter × spring wheat crosses. Seventy F1 progenies developed by 14 winter and five spring wheat lines using a line × tester design were evaluated, along with their parents, for yield and yield attributes in a randomized complete block design under field conditions. The mean squares for all the characters studied showed highly significant differences. The mean squares due to female × male interactions were significant for all the characters studied except for grains per ear and grain weight per ear. Additive genetic effects were found to play a key role in controlling the expression of days to heading, plant height and spikelets per ear.‘MV 19’ and ‘Stepniak’/‘Karvuna’ among winter and ‘PBW 65’ among spring wheats were good general combiners for most of the yield attributes studied. The estimates for specific combining ability effects suggested that, although general combining ability (GCA) effects of most winter wheats are either average or poor, their combination can give desirable genotypes with spring wheat parents possessing a high GCA.

    Notes: Four cold-tolerant rice varieties, viz. ‘Khonorullo’, ‘Namyi’, ‘Abor B’ and ‘Meghalaya-1’ were crossed with two cold-susceptible ones, viz. ‘Pusa 33’ and ‘Subhadra’ (DR92), in all possible combinations to study the inheritance of gene(s) governing panicle exsertion and their allelic relationship among cold-tolerant varieties. F1 hybrids of all the crosses showed complete panicle exsertion indicating dominance of this trait. Segregation pattern of panicle exsertion in F2 and backcrosses show that all the four cold-tolerant varieties possessed a single dominant gene designated as Ctr-1. Absence of segregation for panicle exsertion in an F2 generation obtained from intercrosses of cold-tolerant varieties suggests that the dominant genes in all the four cultivars are allelic.

    Notes: Abstract Detection of binary images in noise is considered in the light of statistical detection theory, with particular reference to information storage systems. The different disturbances are classified into system noise and transparency noise. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) have been obtained when the scanned binary image is corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise and multiplicative speckle. It is shown that improvement in ROC with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is less pronounced in the presence of speckle.

    Notes: Abstract We propose new phase- and polarisation-insensitive receivers for coherent optical fibre communication systems which have the following characteristic features: (a) insensitivity to LO excess noise in addition to phase- and polarization-insensitivity; (b) absence of optical PLL and polarization control devices; (c) a smaller detector bandwidth requirement than for heterodyne systems; (d) the same source linewidth requirement as for heterodyne systems with non-coherent demodulation; (e) the possibility of a complete optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC) version in the future.

    Notes: Abstract. A folding potential describing the $\alpha$ -scattering on 16O over a broad energy range 25.8-146.0 MeV is constructed on the basis of $\alpha$ -like cluster and unclustered-nucleon configurations of 16O. The resulting potential does not need any renormalization to fit the angular distribution of elastic cross-sections. The effects of the repulsive part of $\alpha$ - $\alpha$ and $\alpha$ -nucleon interactions are investigated. The analysis suggests that both the $\alpha$ - $\alpha$ repulsive potential and the unclustered nucleonic configuration in the target are important to describe the scattering data over a broad range of incident energies. The root-mean-square radius for the 16O nucleus is deduced.

    Notes: Abstract. —Earthquakes continue to occur in the vicinity of Shivaji Sagar Lake since its creation by the Koyna Dam in 1962. The seismicity peaked in 1967 with a M 6.3 earthquake which claimed over 200 human lives and destroyed the Koyna township. Earthquakes of M≥ 4 occur every year following an increase of water level in the reservoir. During 1973, 1980 and 1993–94 earthquakes exceeding magnitude 5 occurred. Most earthquakes of M≥ 4 are associated with pronounced foreshocks and aftershocks. Starting Sepember 1993, seismic monitoring was vastly improved with the deployment of additional close-by stations (analog and digital). The focal parameters now available have enabled delineation of the active faults and deciphering of the earthquake nucleation process. During 1995–96, 13 boreholes were drilled to depths of 130 to 250 m and measurement of water levels in these wells was initiated. A preliminary analysis of one year's data from a borehole 1 km south of Koyna reveals tidal signatures, indicating connection of the well to a confined aquifer which is favorable for detection of pore pressure anomalies induced by crustal strain. We hope to improve our understanding of the genesis of reservoir-induced earthquakes at Koyna with these new measurements.
