Notes: The MHC status of epithelial cells from 32 primary colorectal neoplasms, villous adenomata (VA; 2) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; 3) were evaluated using a panel of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). Class I antigens and β2 microglobulin (β2m) were expressed on all normal, benign, inflammatory and malignant epithelia with the exception of two carcinomas. A more complex pattern of reactivity was encountered with anti-class II mAbs. Some expression was detected on normal glandular and luminal epithelium, particularly adjacent to the tumour. Inflammatory tissues, VA and 23/32 carcinomas were also antigen-positive, the proportion of stained epithelial cells ranging from 5% to 90%. Expression was usually non-coordinate, DR being the predominant specificity followed by DP and DQ, which is suggestive of independent D region gene regulation. The hypothesis that class II expression is induced in vivo by locally generated IFN γ was not confirmed by in vitro treatment with this agent of epithelial colorectal carcinoma-derived cell lines. These provisional data suggest that although IFN γ may be a necessary stimulus for class II expression it is insufficient and that other factors also influence the responsiveness of tumour cells in this respect.

Notes: Following ion-exchange, Sephadex LH-20 and paper chromatography of the methanolic extracts of young, developing fruits of Aegle marmelos Correa, cytokinin-like activity in the soybean callus assay was detected in six fractions. Of the four butanol-soluble compounds, two were tentatively identified as zeatin and zeatin riboside, and the others as zeatin glucoside and zeatin riboside glucoside. The major cytokinino of the butanol-insoluble fraction is probably zeatin nucleotide. The levels of compounds with cytokinin-like activity were high during the early phase, and low in the subsequent period of fruit growth. The activity resembling that of cytokinin glucoside increased with maturation of the fruit. The content of free cytokinins in the fruits was more than that released from the tRNA.

Notes: Abstract The rheological study of coal-oil suspensions is very important because of their application in many industries as alternative fuels to petroleum oil. In this work, the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspension was studied for a range of coal volume fractions from 0.0378 to 0.427. Shear stresses were measured for shear rates up to 200 s−1 using a Weissenberg Rheogoniometer. All the suspensions behaved like non-Newtonian liquids and exhibited significant increases in apparent viscosity on storage. The flow behaviour of both freshly prepared and aged suspensions was able to be described by power-law models. A model similar to that given by Chong was used to establish relation between the relative apparent viscosity and coal volume fraction for freshly prepared as well as all aged suspensions. A correlation was also established between ageing time and maximum coal volume fraction.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Als Beitrag zur Klärung der Genese der Kupferlagerstätten in der Singhbhum Shear Zone, Indien, wurden geochemische Untersuchungen an Erzen und Nebengestein durchgeführt.
Notes: Abstract The genesis of the copper ore deposits of the Singhbhum shear zone, India, has been worked out through a detailed geochemical examination of the ores and the country rocks. Following different techniques of atomic absorption, the abundances of Cu, Co, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cd, Ag, Mn and Hg were determined and the trace element characteristics of the principal rock units in and outside the shear zone have been compiled and critically evaluated. The data suggest that the ore deposits are the result of a sequence of long-continued and over-lapping geological processes culminating in intense shearing, syntectonic granitization and considerable mobilization of the ore elements. The Precambrian metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the shear zone, as well as those enclosing it, served as the source, while diffusion of the ore constituents and their precipitation in physicochemically favourable structural traps, formed in response to shearing, resulted in the formation of the deposits.

Notes: Summary Utilization of 8 monosaccharides, viz., glucose, fructose, galactose, mannose, sorbose, arabinose, xylose and rhamnose, by some plant pathogenic isolates ofColletotrichum gloeosphorioides andC. dematium has been studied with the help of paper chromatography. Among hexoses, the rate of utilization of glucose, fructose and mannose was fast, whereas, that of galactose was comparatively slow. The rate of assimilation of sorbose was very slow at early stages of incubation, although at later stages this rate showed marked enhancement. The pentoses were utilized readily. The dry weight of mycelial mats showed an increase up to the end of final incubation period (15 days), on sugars which were slowly assimilated. In cases where the sugars were consumed up rapidly, the dry weight at later stages of incubation either became nearly stationary or recorded slight fall.
